Hello all,

I have a MSI barebone MS-1762 and have enjoyed using it for many years. I upgraded it with an SSD and already replaced the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 670m with a 870M some years ago. I am wondering if I can also install a GTX 1060 to replace the old 870M.  The 870M simply cannot handle modern games at all and I hate to have to replace this otherwise still great laptop!
I searched online for the upgrade and it appears some people have gotten it to work, but I don't know if it is still possible to obtain the right parts and firmware. Does anyone have a clue?
Can I buy any GTX 1060 online, or do I need to look for something specific?

I really appreciate any help you can give me.

[update]
I just ran the MSI Help Desk application and here is a part of the output:

I think GTX1060 may not be compatible with your laptop.
You can raise a ticket to MSI to confirm the compatibility.

Thanks for the suggestion. I raised a ticket. If a GTX 1060 can't be done, then perhaps a GTX980M is still a viable option?

I suppose a 1060 and even 1070 should work - you do have the right BIOS and EC for upgraded cards. Check here: gt70 0ne gpu upgrade
I had the GT70, it started life with a 680M, I upgraded 3 years back to the 980M without issue. As I recall the 10 series gpu's don't have the mmx technology that let us replace cards on that lappy, a beauty it was. Unfortunately lost to a battle with coffee :(

In case anyone wants to know: I successfully upgraded the MS-1762 with a Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 Mobile. I did have to apply the Nvidia INF mod, but apart from that it was plug 'n play.
Because this succeeded I also ordered a new Intel Core i7-3840QM and two new Wifi cards (WiFi 5 for Windows 7 support and WiFi 6 for Windows 10). Because I can :).
