MS-8348A packet writing problems

I recently bought a MS-8348A writer and I am very happy with it, except for one thing. There seems to be a serious bug with packet writing. I'm running WinXP with the latest service pack (SP1) applied. The problem occurs both with Roxio's DirectCD (version 5.3.2.34a) and Ahead's InCD (version 3.5.191) packet writing software. I have verified that this problem occurs with several different brands and different speed rated CD-RW media.
When trying to packet write to a CD-RW, the drive needs to write and read alternately. The writing seems to be fine. However, the reading is where the problem begins. When trying to read the disc, the drive spins up to a very high RPM, much higher than when writing (CD-RW max. writing speed is 'just' 16x). As I said, when doing packet writing, the drive writes and reads randomly. The drive seems to get confused by the frequent changes between low RPM (when writing) and high RPM (when reading), and the end result is that the packet writing fails.
I found a way to circumvent the above mentioned problem, by limiting the max. read speed of the drive with another program (Nero Drivespeed). Limiting the max. reading speed of the drive to 16x or lower seems to solve the above mentioned problem entirely. However, you will agree that this is not an optimal solution.
I have tried several firmware versions of the drive, but none of them fixes the problem. I've tried version 1.20D, version 1.40D and version 1.50D (which I'm keeping, because the older version do not fix the problem). I sincerely hope the above described problem can be fixed in a future firmware update.
Note that this problem only occurs with packet writing. Normal burning of a CD-RW disc is no problem at all.

Anyone having the same issues or familiar with the problem here?

Yes, I have the same problems, although I noticed it when trying to drag and drop files of over 400mb with only Nero installed. It failed after changing speeds as you described. I read a thread on google about packet writing and it suggested to use the Direct CD program and that some software wouldn't accomodate files over 400mb. I proceeded to install Roxio Platnum 5 and it now says that the drive is not compatible. I guess I'll try the 150.d patch but it doesn't look good for me, all my video files are over 400mb.

With me, it doesn't make a difference between small and large files. The problem occurs with both. Although it seems to happen faster with a lot of small files.

I've sent an email to techsupport about this, a week ago or so. Still no answer though
I suggest you try the same. First you'll get one of them autoreply mails, just follow the instructions in it for sending your email again, so someone from techsupport gets it.

dhrto, can you answer a few questions?

1. Do you have InCD and DirectCD installed at the same time? That is a bad no-no. In fact, the latest versions of Nero will not even install if you already have DirectCD on the machine.
2. Did you update the ASPI layer in WinXP? This is a must to get any burning program to work correctly under XP.
3. Have you turned OFF the built-in burning capability of WinXP? It is under "Services" and will conflict with other burning software.
4. Do you have an earlier version of Nero/InCD installed? If it is over a year old it does not have an updated .dll file that Nero needs to work correctly with WinXP. The updated file is available from Nero.
5. And last , but not least, do you have auto-notification of data cd's turned on? I have found that I have to turn this OFF to get InCD to mount the CDRW disk properly, every time. Please note, I said every time. It will work for a while and then the next time you need the disk the program will just set there and make the disk spin and spin, just like you are experiencing. So on MY system I keep auto-notification turned off and all works well. Of course, your mileage may very.

These are just a few things to check that I have learned you have to deal with with XP. Good luck.

Pntgrd:
Thanks for the pointers.

1. I don't have DirectCD and InCD installed at the same time. Never had.
2. Yes, to the latest version 4.71a2
3. Yes
4. Nope, recent versions only.
5. Auto-insert notification turned on for data cd's. This is due to DirectCD requiring this to be on. I've always used DirectCD before I bought the MS-8348A.

I almost know 100% for sure that the problems I'm experiencing are hardware related (meaning the MS-8348A). This is because my 2 previous writers worked flawlessly in the same configuration. My previous was a LG 8120B (12 speed) and the one before that was a HP 8100i (4 speed).

I prefer DirectCD over InCD because I've always used DirectCD. I have a lot CD-RW's formatted with DirectCD. And a lot of those CD-RW's I use to transfer data between different PC's. And some of the writers in the other PC's are not supported by InCD.

Regarding Roxio's EZCD Platinum, did you download all the latest patches including the drive updates?

I know I know, Many folks hate Roxio...

I will be including this in my report this week but don't expect miracles or an instant solution.

dhrto, sounds like you have covered all the bases. You would be amazed at how many people would just blame te writer without checking if it is something else causing the problems.

I have the same problem.
Latest firmware 150D
Tried latest InCD and Roxio
Expensive good CD_RW discs

It is the firmware that causes the problem
Workaround is to put it at 8x with Drive Speed

I'm already using high speed CD-RW discs. The discs are even rated up to 16x, brand "Nashua".

You seem to miss the point of this thread. It's about problems with packet writing. It has nothing to do with the normal burning of CD-RW discs in Nero or any other program.

My 8348A burns perfect in EasyCDCr. 5.3.x BUT.....formatting a rw/rw (directCD) goes wrong. Formatting stops after a couple of minutes or never finishes, PC hangs. Nero gives the same problems. However, when burning a small file on any cd-rw and than format the cd all goes well. Either 4x or 16x format finish in good order.
Next is writing/reading the formatted CD. I tried 4x speed and 16x(highspeed) Philips cd's....error.
BUT when using the (freeware) NERO-Drivespeed and setting the speed to 8x I finally had a CR-RW that did what it should do.
Yes I updated the firmware and am convinced that this firmware still is the cause of the problems.
Tried the 8348 in 2 computers with WinXP and Win96SE, each time the same problems.

Help

I noticed that since yesterday
for the MS 4852-A2 and the MS-8348-A2 new firmware
(160-d) available can be downloaded.

Reason: "1) improve high-speed CD-R/RW medium
compatibility.

Now hoping that this update for the 8348-A will soon be available.
