Make sure you test it before installing. If you like it or not. For new users it’s sometimes a challenge to find the correct apps on linux. Mostly they give up if something happens and take the easy road and reinstall windows. When i started to use linux in 2021 i had it installed on my notebook, but i also made sure i had another installation on my external drive. I did this so i could test stuff before i made a mess on my notebook.

For microsoft paint i use pinta in linux.
For internet i use Firefox
For gaming i use steam/ea app. Epic games and gog games i use lutris for.
For microsoft office i use libre office (open office can also be used).

When you try linux, don’t give up if you don’t know how. Google can help, the linux community can help and believe it or not…copilot online can help too 😂.
I use Libre Office also since 2021, prefer it to Microsoft Office, you can't beat the price also and never had any issues with it, in any Windows version.

Merry Christmas to all! MichelN86 you still & as always are the MAN.
Looks like I'm jumping ship too , in a way. As with Intel. I have made the choice to go to AMD.
Their last & latest processors/heatfest Intel CPUs are All bullshxx. AMD have better performance in gaming, 24.1 % over the board in any/all games.
Then their/Intel latest fake-naming processors are the same ( all bullshxx), their latest under performing CPU's are all junk in the trunk.
I'll be purchasing a MSI AMD Raider 18" 4090 . AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX3D Hands down the AMD beats Intel i9-14900HX in performance gaming bench marks by 24.1%
People like me buy laptops like this for one reason only, to GAME baby !
The laptop I will be buying was released Nov/2024, with a AMD processor that was a year old & why with an nVidia 4090 & not a Radeon GPU?
Intel has some splainin' to do Lucy. Well they lost top dog spot a long time ago with their overheating issues. It has only gotten worst for them & their CPU's.
On a bright spot for Intel, their video cards "ARC" are getting good reviews, will see how this works out for them.

My 12th Gen laptop was running at 160 degrees with a cooling fan pad at full blast in menu mode in the last game I installed, with NO turbo, WTH?
I predict it would burnout without a doubt trying to game, Intel, 2 (n)(n) down. Goodbye to overheating Intel.
No, I don't think going to Pop OS would save my overheating Intel based 12th Gen laptop. Overheating Intel fix, is called ....AMD. Or don't just don't game with it.

Whoever claimed these updates are universal? Ist they are for newer MSI LAPTOPS ! Grab a clue.
Well I kind of agree, that Intel are annoying me more and more lately, they take away our options to manage adequately the heat and they make their CPUs hotter and hotter.
The more things are going, if I can't manage adequately their CPUs, then why am I buying them, so AMD seems to be a better alternative, if MSI takes away options in the BIOS,
then the switch to another brand of laptops would be easier also, they did nothing with all the issues with Intel, AMD with other brands, you can easily manage directly in an APP,
no need to dive in the BIOS each time, I love my G14s for this, power management is so easy and convenient.

By the way, Merry Xmas to you also ;)

I don't think going to Pop OS would save my overheating Intel based 12th Gen laptop.
I have a 12th gen notebook, does not get passed 78c during gaming. Using coolerboost during gaming. I also must admit the notebook runs idle cooler on linux compared to windows by a few degree.

Pop! OS i fell in love with it back in 2021, sure there are better distro's but i am not going to try it...at least not in a couple of years anyway. Stuff just runs great out of the box, i did not had 1 issue with drivers. Games are running great (at least the games i play). People who play online alot should be aware that some anti-cheat does not work for linux, so please do your research before you make a switch.

ProtonDB (for checking game status (indication)): https://www.protondb.com/
Anti-Cheat game status: https://areweanticheatyet.com/

EA is blocking alot of games online, those idiots are thinking the linux community is hacking in their games. Linux has a small % in marketshare, but yeah EA...blame linux users. In windows people can't hack anyway! fools.

Please excuse me for ranting/raving. Never the less I have purchased a "newly" released MSI AMD Raider Hx 18"! Today ! Released 11/2024.
Amazon, 1 star, ExCaliberPC 5 stars! Amazon messed up the delivery address & my re-corrected/same delivery address, then canceled my purchase on the next screen.
My 2nd purchase from Amazon of Crucial 96 GB of ram is also in a type of limbo. Amazon did a re-set of my account because Amazon messed up my choice of the laptop delivery. Oh well, I got the laptop straighten out, the memory is just a secondary. Amazon was doing sooooo good before too, then comes the holiday.
Oh, but a password reset & a re-enter all credit card info fixes everything, right? Nope! But does help Chinese/Russian hackers to eat up your info.
The only help I proceeded to get (after 40 mins of no help with Amazon/AI chat) was because ExCaliberPC had their phone number on Amazon.
Never the less I will soon be a AMD nerd & loving every minute of it! Also purchased 96 GB of Crucial ram for it, maybe ? Did Amazon cancel this too?
MichelN86 yes, Pop OS will be installed on this one!
I purchased the bare bones version because I know better! Windows 11 Home gone like no tomorrow.
Intel, oh please, If I find any need for ANY Intel drivers just shoox me quick.
My problem is a 2 fold issue. Windows has failed users in their development of an OS. Intel has failed in their promise of top notch CPU"s.
AI will not be the answer to cover this short coming for both of these companies.
The only answer is for these short comings is market place competition. We as consumers can not let market giants take that away from us.
A MSI Raider 18HX with a AMD processor & an NVidia 4090 ? 2 months ago I said there was no such creature. I was proved wrong.
Delivery, 12/19-20, oh my, thank you ExCaliberPC, I did not expect this.

To HueSpat. I agree to disagree. I did my research here my fellow poster. 2nd Intel processors have been known for heating issues since the XP days.
Intel claims that processor speed will increase every year ..... well they only proved themselves wrong on this!
AMD beating the heck out of Intel at gaming? Not my claim. Just read the reviews by experts who do nothing else then rate their AMD/Intel products.
You will NEVER ever convince me that I am not right here. I lived & learned that my flaming Intel laptop is RIGHT on the money.
See there is only the bottom line here. Who is the best at gaming performance. Right here, right now the top dog is AMD processors, period.
Read all the top-rated review on gaming performance. For me nothing else matters what the "H" they can or can not do.
Merry Christmas to all.

78c during gaming. 172.4 Fahrenheit.
I had on MSI Cooler boost full blast, cooler fan pad full blast, turbo boost off. Game, Warhammer 40000 - Space Marine 2
160 degrees Fahrenheit in the games menu. So yes for some unknown reason your 12th Gen MSI laptop runs much cooler than mine.
Trade you, 1 for one/even up bro & I'll say tanks.
Unfortunately I read that the model I own is "famous/notorious" for overheating. But why? Same processor, same brand/manufacturer.
This one is not made for gaming, let alone using turbo mode. Overclock, you funny guy.
This is exactly why the prior model burned out while Windows 11 was installing 23H2 in turbo mode. Did I say I luv Windows, oh yeh, a whole bunch.
So MichelN86, you kind of answered my question. That PopOS will not be able to turn this overheating mess into a gaming laptop that it was meant to be.
A few degrees cooler, are we talking 10-15 degrees maybe? But hey maybe it was built to those who live in Siberia in the dead of winter, to use as a outside entertainment source.

Hope everyone is well!
Is there any chance anyone knows of a newer Intel Management Engine firmware update tool? (newer ME firmware)

Latest notebook/laptop specific MSI ME FW Update Tool I can find is ME16127 (16.1.27.2176 LP)
Create a web ticket to contact MSI tech support team, they will provide the latest firmware if you get a vulnerability notification.

Well since ther might be issues with multiplayer online games, I have several that I enjoy very much,
I will start by using my GS65 during the holidays, with Pop! OS on an external NVMe drive, to test everything.

Thank you very much for your inputs on the matter, helps me to reduce the extent of issues that might happen.

Well if you don't mind, please let us know your experience with the Pop! OS, on your new beast.
I hope you will be much more satisfied with your recent purchase of your AMD Raider 18HX, than your previous ones.

Sorry to hear about your issues with amazon, one of the reasons I prefer going with newegg, best buy, staples, memory express or walmart,
when I purchase tech products, at least delivery and returns are smoother, when issues arise, but nowadays, they can drop the ball, on the odd occasion.

Well I do agree with you, up to some point, but I only have issues with Intel since the infamous ''Plundervolt'', before that issue,
Intel had the edge for me in gaming and desirable CPU to have, but now with even more hurdles imposed by Intel and Microsoft,
I am looking more and more towards AMD CPUs and even other brands of laptops, MSI was top dog with their BIOS, but they seem,
to just remain a bystander, while Intel and Microsoft spread havoc among the Laptop and PC industry, very, very insulted by their attitude,
I hope someone will put on their pants and take charge about what's going on with their products, before more and more people jump ship.

Did you have a chance to check the BIOS, to see if there are still viable options available?
A lot of complaints by users, about recent AMD, ULTRA and 14th Gen BIOS, changes.

Nvidia linix driver + Intel Bluetooth driver + Intel Wifi driver + i contacted Kevin for the latest Nahimic driver are added in the post from yesterday (aio).

Merry Christmas!!!

Thx!

Idle temps after 5 and half hours online (and after gaming) in Pop! OS 22.04.
Very impressive, to say the least.
I am sure that if the temperatures are so low, then that means the wattage consumption must be reduced significantly also,
saving money and increasing longevity of the hardware, thus adding more savings in the long term.

Received my MSI AMD 4090 RTX Raider today. 1st step. Tomorrow my Crucial 96 Gb for it. Next week a 4TB Samsung 990Pro SSD drive for the gaming drive.
So MichelN86 this will all go together with Pop OS as my "OS". The bare-bones 1TB drive will be removed along with the 32 GB of ram.
Then comes the goodies. My Pop OS will run on a Samsung 2 TB 990 Pro drive, games on the 4 TB Samsung 990 Pro with 96 GB of Crucial DDR5 ram. Then game on.
How much? A little over 4 grand. I purchased a 4 year warranty with this one. So with the one year MSI warranty, that's 5 years, which includes being dropped & breakage.
Unlike drek4 I only have 3 "working" MSI laptops (& one slightly burnt/toasted one), for awhile I will keep a Windows install on one. The oldest one, because I luv dicking with Windows when I feel in a good mood.
Amazon & eBay both have &/or are funny. Right now the word is internet scamming is up 85%. So, the best answer is to bare with it .
Well, I couldn't wait for the next wave of the latest/greatest laptops & this will do. For me, I don't under estimate the power of a "derp" in charge. come Jan/20th.
After I'm done putting this together, I'll report back here on how this MSI AMD Raider performs. Hey, drek4 if you have ANY pointers, I'm ALL ears !
Windows is still trying to update my expired OS/21H2 to a also expired OS (22H2)??? Maybe they figure that sumtin updated is better than nothing, NOPE!
The flaming GL76 12th Gen will also go to a Pop OS, it's goodbye Windows on that one too !
I'm coming MichelN86 & will be joining you on the other side!
This laptop comes with a Killer WIFI 7 card/aka Intel. Someone I know claims he has connection issues with it, that the WIFI 7 card is being dropped.
Hopefully that will be the only Intel driver ??? Come on man it's has a AMD processor!!! No Smart Sound is needed!
MichelN86 does Pop OS use Nahimic?

At drek4, I was mainly pointing a finger at Intel's latest/newest processor's. They underperform, they cut the cores & the performance took a hit with it.
Then the naming confusing. For Intel laptops, last years processors with more cores perform with higher specs than these newer lower cores do.

Will purchase Soul Reaver 1&2 Remastered from Steam this week-end, will enjoy this very much during the holidays, last time I played this was 20 years ago,
time sure flies, such fond memories, of when I played Soul Reaver 1 for the first time on PS1, 25 years ago.

@ronvessGL76: Pop! OS 22.04 vs Pop! OS 24.04 (Still alpha, will be out in Q1 2025). System76 is creating their own desktop environment called cosmic and it's based on rust. The reason they are creating their own desktop environment is because gnome loves to strip down users settings/customization.

  1. 1. Pop! OS 24.04 beta release: 2025.01-2025.02
  2. 2. Pop! OS 24.04 first release: 2025.02-2025.03
