Received my MSI AMD 4090 RTX Raider today. 1st step. Tomorrow my Crucial 96 Gb for it. Next week a 4TB Samsung 990Pro SSD drive for the gaming drive.
So MichelN86 this will all go together with Pop OS as my "OS". The bare-bones 1TB drive will be removed along with the 32 GB of ram.
Then comes the goodies. My Pop OS will run on a Samsung 2 TB 990 Pro drive, games on the 4 TB Samsung 990 Pro with 96 GB of Crucial DDR5 ram. Then game on.
How much? A little over 4 grand. I purchased a 4 year warranty with this one. So with the one year MSI warranty, that's 5 years, which includes being dropped & breakage.
Unlike drek4 I only have 3 "working" MSI laptops (& one slightly burnt/toasted one), for awhile I will keep a Windows install on one. The oldest one, because I luv dicking with Windows when I feel in a good mood.
Amazon & eBay both have &/or are funny. Right now the word is internet scamming is up 85%. So, the best answer is to bare with it .
Well, I couldn't wait for the next wave of the latest/greatest laptops & this will do. For me, I don't under estimate the power of a "derp" in charge. come Jan/20th.
After I'm done putting this together, I'll report back here on how this MSI AMD Raider performs. Hey, drek4 if you have ANY pointers, I'm ALL ears !
Windows is still trying to update my expired OS/21H2 to a also expired OS (22H2)??? Maybe they figure that sumtin updated is better than nothing, NOPE!
The flaming GL76 12th Gen will also go to a Pop OS, it's goodbye Windows on that one too !
I'm coming MichelN86 & will be joining you on the other side!
This laptop comes with a Killer WIFI 7 card/aka Intel. Someone I know claims he has connection issues with it, that the WIFI 7 card is being dropped.
Hopefully that will be the only Intel driver ??? Come on man it's has a AMD processor!!! No Smart Sound is needed!
MichelN86 does Pop OS use Nahimic?
Well all my MSI laptops are purchases from end 2015 to today, so some recent, otheres not so much, but they are all Intel based CPUs,
so would be difficult for me to give you advice on the BIOS, since the only AMD based laptops I have are my G14s.
But I installed G-Helper, a little better than Armoury crate, but for power management, it's awesome on th G14s.

Nice video Pop!
MichelN86: Do you think I can use the driver Nahimic 4.12.4.0 (EXTv1.5.60.0) on my Lenovo LEGION ?
You have to contact Kevin Lin for that, the ones i share are for MSI only (APO4). I have send you a PM for contact info.

Hey Michel long time no speak hope you're well this holiday season!

This might be random but I was updated to 24H2 recently and I am experiencing a boatload of issues. The sluggishness of my laptop feels like a nightmare, everything is crashing, nothing is working properly. I don't have a recovery point apparently, even though I updated only a few days ago. Windows Cleanup froze up and deleted my 23H2 files...

Any solutions other than doing a complete wipe? Any drivers that might help? Even as I type this, the laptop freezes up every 5 seconds or so.

Well i am back on Linux since september, i found out linux patched their kernel to give better support to msi systems. I made the jump back to Pop! OS 22.04. I used that operating system from 2021-2023. I could not go back to linux because the MSI notebook whas not yet supported back then. I hate the path Microsoft is taking (back then and now even more).

You can try the drivers i have posted but if that does not work you really need to find out what’s causing the issues (i suspect msi center).

Okay, thanks Michel.

Do you have an idea what settings in MSI Center would be causing it or I need to change?

Delete the application and it’s services and check how it’s running.

Uninstalled MSI Center and MSI SDK. The lockups are still happening sadly. I read that 24H2 is causing issues for a huge majority of users, seems myself included... I wish I had read about it before blindly doing this update... I work from my laptop and now MS has screwed me.

Whas worth a try since i saw people posting here msi center had issues amd freezed up their system in 24H2. Is it possible to rollback ?

Unfortunately Disk Cleanup tool deleted my 23H2 version recovery files even though I instructed it not to by unchecking the box. So I can't rollback. I think my only option at this point is going to do a fresh reinstall from ISO boot. Really painful as I have over a terabyte of work spread out all over my drive that I need to find and consolidate which will likely take longer than the actual fresh install. 😢

Did you check in the log files if there are any errors present ? Before sweeping the drive i would check that first.

I performed an sfc /scannow and full DISM check, but neither came back with any issues oddly enough. I was hoping some drivers being updated would help but so far that hasn't helped either. My CPU is reaching 70-85c temps even when just using Chrome, causing hangups often and the fans to kick into overdrive. :\

Update: The DISM Repair function froze at 62.3% which is an indicator of corrupted files from what I understand. So I did a CHKDSK run, and currently the laptop is running much smoother, but I don't know if it will hold. Feels like a band-aid solution currently. I will keep an eye on it and will most likely have to do a full reinstall of Win11 24H2 if it keeps happening.

Maybe you should think about switching to linux 😂. Windows becomes shittier by the day. Last year i had for 4 months long issues with bsod because ms pushed a update ahead for 24H2 (in 2023). It took Nvidia 4 months to fix it (or to workaround it). I also had issues with one of my usb ports. Tried updating the driver, tried sfc scannow and a full dism check. No errors it said, yet when i used it alot i got affected by bsod. Now i use linux for +/- 4 months and i had 0 issues with the exact same port. I don't want to praise linux, i really don't want to do that...but these days linux has grown alot (also thanks to steam).

Intel Microcode from MSI way outdated, my old version whas from 2022. Linux updated it a month ago so i checked the build date today. Current one is from November 2024! Why does MSI not keep their users up-to-date with this! They say it's updated in the bios file, which is not true!

If you decide to stay with Windows and have issues finding 23H2 version, try the link.

this MSI MB audio driver has been recently updated from 6.0.9738.1 to version 6.0.9757.1 as of Fri. Nov. 22 (same download link but new version)

again, like with any driver version released from 6.0.9727.1 onwards, the "Realtek audio/sound delay" registry fixes are not needed anymore

this MSI MB audio driver has been recently updated from 6.0.9757.1 to version 6.0.9768.1 as of late evening Mon. Dec. 23 (same download link but new version) - nice Christmas gift to close out year 2024.

once again, like with any driver version released from 6.0.9727.1 onwards, the "Realtek audio/sound delay" latency registry fixes are not needed anymore.

Today i installed Pop! OS 24.04 Alpha 4 on my wifes older notebook (Came with windows 8, model from 2011/2012). The system runs very stable and pretty fast. What i do like is the customization that got added in this release. System76 ditched the Gnome desktop environment and created their own called cosmic written in rust.

First time i used a app to record the desktop, no sounds because i am showing stuff what it does. I also love the panel and dock settings, this is how i always wanted it.

In a few month (2-3 months) the final release will be released, i am very excited about it 😎. Looks promising…

Extend battery life, it will charge to 80% and will not go above it.

Working on my MSI AMD Raider A18HX 4090. Golly is Windows an ugly critter. Came with Office365 in 20+ languages & Norton, All uninstalled.
Boy, I should of just used PowerShell to uninstall Office 365, talk about junk in trunk. Every language had it's own uninstaller, in slow mo.
No Intel drivers, dats a plus. But the Realtek Audio is mess. It seems like every Realtek extension for the version it came with was installed. Pot luck install?
Golly, if every extension is installed, sumtin gotta work, right?
Well, I went on the PC Gamer website. Why, one of the only reviews that came up. Not a pretty review for it either.
Yes, this tank of a laptop is just under 8 lbs. Heavy plastic? I think it has more to do with how they tried to cool this beast.
Heavy, you bet ya. In my back pack it's as heavy as both my other MSI laptops put together.
I think my plastic $ 50.00 cooling stand won't last to long under the weight of this one.
PC Gamer also claimed a 4090 in a laptop is a waste. They might have a point on that. Claimed the 4080 is a better choice in laptops because of the heat.
Anyway before I remove Windows/Home/blah,blah "OS" I'm getting to know how this is setup for drivers.
Sound is/meh, no problem I use headphones anyway.
I'll try out one game before I open it up & put in the goodies I purchased for it.
Windows turbo mode? Don't know if AMD uses it yet. Will find that out.
On my other laptop/GL76 installing the latest Bluetooth 100 series did the unthinkable, it did exactly what you warned about MichelN86.
Thanks Intel, I needed that. Until I move over to PopOS on that one, Intel Bluetooth/Wifi drivers will not be updated every month anymore.
Drek4. thanks for letting me know. Well I too was an Intel junkie until now. My last AMD was back in 2004 & it was overrated desktop processor.
Steel Series keyboard with app? A 1 gig install of what junk? I started up it's app & was not impressed. Doesn't look like something I need at all.
Thanks for the Realtek audio update, this one needs it, bad. No idea what extensions it needs, but will find that out eventually.
Merry Christmas everyone & have a happy new year!
MichelN86, thanks for listing the latest Pop 24.04 Alpha 4, that was going to be one of my questions.
