MSI DVD

I just got a system with the MSI GeForce4 440 MX-VTP on an Asus P4B533 motherboard and an AOpen 1648 DVD-ROM. The included MSI-DVD software will not play past the initial Copyright warning screens.

It plays 2001 Space Odyssey just fine, yet it exhibits the symptoms trying to play Star Wars Episode 1. or Toy Story.

My theory is that the player/vid card/DVD-ROM cannot leave the warning screens succesfully.

MSI DVD appears to be MSI's logo'd Intervideo WinDVD 3.1

Symptoms:
Screen hangs for 5 seconds,
HD light becomes solid on,
DVD keeps spinning with the light out,
does not eject by button,
Windows XP Pro no longer lists the drive in My Computer,
and Add New Hardware cannot even find it.

After restarting the system, DVD works again.

Attempts I have made to resolve this:
fresh install of MSI-DVD
Playing DVD through Windows Media Player.
- results in symptoms after FBI warning
Playing DVD through MSI-DVD
- results in symptoms upon inserting DVD if already open or symptoms upon opening program.

Any help appreciated.

I'm having a similar problem. No matter what I try, I cannot get the MSI-DVD ROM to play a DVD movie. It'll play CD music just fine but when I load WINDVD or Media Player, it cuts out right after the warning screen. I checked the Audio section in WINDVD before I inserted a DVD and it was all grey. I read something about enabling the DMA in the properties section for this device but the DMA option isn't available for the DVD.

Are there any known compatibility issues with the hardware that I have?

I still don't see where I can change the DMA settings in the control panel. I found the primary and secondary IDE devices/channels under the Device Manager in XP but no DMA information under these options.

Any other suggestions?

pick one of either primary or secondary

pick advanced tab it should be there in a box type option

I'm assuming you are talking about the Device Manager in XP. When I click on the primary IDE or secondary IDE channel in the DEvice Manager, I get three tabs: General, Driver, and Resources. If I click on the resources I can see my IRQ settings but no "Advanced" section and I'm unable to change the automatic settings.

After experimenting with some Video CDs, DVDs, Audio, etc in the DVD ROM drive, I found that everything is working fine except for the actual playing of the DVD movies; some play and some such as Monsters Inc. won't. I think this might have something to do with the Copyright protection on the DVDs. I'm using MSIDVD-WinDVD 3.x but this happens with any type of DVD player including Media Player.

Has any one experience a problem similar to this?

After taking the machine into the shop, they updated the DVD-ROM firmware, flashed the motherboard BIOS and somehow upgraded or patched MSI-DVD.

Based on the fact that the only pieces rldrolet and I have in common is the software and sound card, I assume it is the upgrade to MSI-DVD that solved the issue.

BTW: as a result of these fixes, the HD light turns on during the POST and stays on all the time now.

see if you can enable dma in bios or if there is a bios update i needed one on my nv7133r before it would run dma

After updating every file/driver/bios that I had and still having the problem, I D/L'd WINDVD 4.0 and fixed the problem!
