I Built my system 281208 & spec is:
MSI ECLIPSE
i7 940 2.93
Corsair TR3X6G1333C9
NOCTUA NHU12PE COOLER
XIGMATEK NRPMC1501 1500w
RAID 0 2x SAMSUNG HD753LJ 750GB
SLI 2x NVIDIA GEFORCE 9800 GTX+
LG GGW-H20L
OPTIARC AD7170
VISTA ULTIMATE x64BIT

The problem i seem to have recurring is a failed MSI ECLIPSE mobo!!
I have had 3 MSI ECLIPSE mobo's all RMA'D from supplier.
I have never messed with updating the bios with any of the boards.
The 1st board just wouldn't boot, after phone calls to suppliers tech dept RMA 1.
The 2nd board ran fine for 3 months then suddenly on startup the PC booted then switched off then rebooted.Contacted MSI TECH who emailed me instructions & told if thet failed to contact supplier.
So phone to supplier RMA 2.
This current board has run for 3 weeks fine. Then 3 days ago (& again today!) on boot got message CMOS DATA WRONG F1 TO RESET DATA.

Has anyone experienced a similar problem please??
The supplier has agreed another RMA but i cannot keep going through this!
I am considering the BIOSTAR TPOWER X58A. :agrees:

It sounds like the lithium battery on the mobo is dying or maybe the cmos button is jammed into the socket causing it to reset the cmos everytime u power up.

I had to RMA my first eclipse mobo coz it wouldn't run my 1600mhz ram at 1333mhz JEDEC values - the board would just give me BSODs even when i loaded the correct memory timings. The 2nd Eclipse board is working fine at 1333mhz now though  :)

Your 3rd board's problem is the board's battery having problem. No RMA need, just go to a nearby shop and buy the same battery, then fix into your board, bootup and set your BIOS one more time and it should be fine thereafter.

thanks for your replies guys.

fitted new cr2032 battery yesterday afternoon.reset cmos data.

boot up again this afternoon & got same message cmos data wrong!!! motherboard???

When you change battery, you'll get bad cmos checksum error for the 1st bootup. All you need to do is to go into BIOS to save and exit, and it should be fine.

I assumed as the pc worked fine that i didn't have a short, would a pc work normally with a short??

But something is obviously draining the cmos battery as the last new battery lasted less than 24hours apparently!!

Examples would be too many stand offs or in the wrong place (not lined up w/MB mounting holes) behind the MB and I/O plate grounding fingers shorting somewhere.

The easiest way is to test the system out of the chassis and see if the same sympton re-occurs.
