hi all, i decided today to link my parents DVD player to my G4 so i could record some of my favourite movies to my hard drive, as they use the DVD player 24/7 only thing i've noticed though is the quality that i recieve at the G4 is not very good, has a criss cross pattern on the video, with a strange green line at the top is there something i've done wrong or is it something i need to setup?

and before someone says it, i'm not going to share the copied DVD on the internet, as i've paid alot of my money for them and no one will get them off me for zip all nothing...

For the green line it could be your drivers. 30.30 I had a green line about 20pixels deep. I went back to 29.42 and the green line is a fuzzy 1-5pixels.
For the criss-cross ?( maybe macrovision is affecting the recording??? or maybe adjust the frame rate.
The size of the movie may also have output problems also.

If you have a DVD player on your computer, an easier method would be to SmartRipper the vob files to disk, then flask the movie into DivX 3,4 or 5.

Also if you could email me a movie. I have a 10meg limit on my email address, so if you could break that down to say.....100 files......... :D

Hope this helps some....

unfortunatley i don't a DVD player in my PC, what is macrovision?, sorry if im a n33b but the most i use my grfx card for is games usually. i'll take you word on the drivers but any ideas on the criss cross effect, looks kinda interlaced

macrovision is an anti pirating device which will "pulse" the automatic contrast which is evident in video players. Computers have now taken over this role as well. Doesn't sound like that for you though.

Strange that a DVD is interlaced. I can only test this from a PS2 which plays DVDs non-interlaced. Plugged straight into the card is it?

I think WinProducer can get rid of interlaced material or VirtualDub which I use is good for this. You can capture with VirtualDub and then de-interlace straight away.

ok good news, changed drivers, all but one problem gone, how the hell do you make the movies 600-700mb's i did a sample clip it was nearly 2Gb

LOL

now you gotta compress the file using a slower working codec like Divx or an mpeg compression. The program you use should have an option for compression options which you can play around with till you find what happy with for size and quality.
All my energy went on Divx, so I can't help you much with mpeg for VCD/SVCD.

nickys pages could be a good starting point for you or vcdhelp

happy trails...
