I have owned an MSI GT72VR 6RE for just over 2 months now and after trying multiple driver updates, power option changes and reinstalling windows 10 from scratch 4 times I just can't get rid of these random black screen crashes.

I only come across this issue with some games and it's occurrence can vary, sometimes it will happen after 10-15 minutes, sometimes around an hour and in some other games not at all. I will be playing a game when the screen will suddenly go black and in some cases I can still hear the audio from the game as if it's still working in the background, the game will then fully crash or need to be closed through task manager. I will then check the event viewer to see the following event: "Display driver nvlddmkm.sys stopped responding and was recovered" - this is usually displayed twice a few seconds apart in the event viewer.

Three of the games I come across this crash most in are Xcom 2, Battlefield 1 and Blood Bowl 2 - other games which I play at the moment where I don't come across this at all are Total War: Warhammer and Rocket League. I bought this system to replace my old gaming desktop but i'm finding I'm using my desktop more and more again due to my higher spec laptop not being reliable enough to run a game without crashing. Quite disappointed with this laptop as it cost me just under ?2000 and I have spent the last 2 months trying to resolve a fault rather than making use of it as I intended.

Anyway I was really hoping that somebody else had maybe come across this issue and managed to resolve it? The specs are an i7 processor, 8GB GTX 1070 and 16Gb ram which is more than overkill for the 3 games that constantly cause these crashes.

Forgot to say I have already flashed the bios and vbios to the latest versions from the drivers download page at: https://www.msi.com/Laptop/support/GT72VR-6RE-Dominator-Pro.html#down-firmware

Unless there is a newer vbios I can download elsewhere? I'm currently running Nvidia 375.70 driver as I find the latest Nvidia driver makes the crashes occur more. Also the 375.63 driver that originally came with the laptop has the same issues as the the 375.70 which I use as it was recommended as the most stable 10 series driver over at the Nvidia Geforce drivers forum.

MSi report pasted below. I looked at the FAQ and it all seemed pretty standard, I tried downloading the MSI live update tool in case there is newer driver versions I'm missing but it wasn't compatible with my system.

What kind of Live Update tool did you use? If you are talking about the [LIVE UPDATE 6], this tool is only for motherboards products. You should not install it for your laptop.

First, I think you could check with VGA driver and use [DDU] to remove the Nvidia driver.
http://www.msi.com/faq/notebook-2110

Then, download/reinstall Nvidia VGA drivers from following MSI website.

Hi Konstantin

I have already freshly installed windows and tried both the 375.63 driver which is on the download page for my laptop as well as the 375.70 - I find the 375.70 driver more stable. When ever I change the video driver I delete the C:\Nvidia folder as well as using DDU before installing a new driver. Unfortunately even with the 375.63/375.70 driver I still get crashes in games although not as frequent as I do when I try to the latest drivers.

If the troubleshooting didn?t work, you might need to contact with MSI and let them help you check the hardware, graphics and settings.

Thanks!

Getting desperate now so will try this when I get a free evening and let you know how I get on :)

Well guiot.lucas, I totally owe you a case of beer or a fine whiskey from my collection!

This vbios update has resolved crashes on 2 games that I couldn't play for more than 15 minutes without crashing previously, allowed me to use the latest Nvidia drivers and also allows my laptop to run at temperatures I'm far happier with. More importantly I now have a laptop that performs much more like what I expected for my cash. I'm just a little worried that the vbios that comes with the card is so bad that MSI haven't noticed this and updated it with something far more stable like the vbios you provided the link to. I'm not sure if the forum admin's are able to flag this up with MSI but this looks like it's a very important fix!

Anyway thanks again, you made my night. :D
