Hi everyone,
I'm troubleshooting an MSI GV15 Thin 11SCV laptop that I recently acquired and I’m trying to determine whether the issue is a BIOS/firmware problem or a failed motherboard component (possibly the discrete GPU).
Symptoms:
Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
I'm troubleshooting an MSI GV15 Thin 11SCV laptop that I recently acquired and I’m trying to determine whether the issue is a BIOS/firmware problem or a failed motherboard component (possibly the discrete GPU).
Symptoms:
- Power button LED turns white briefly and then orange
- Keyboard backlight turns on
- Fan spins
- Internal display remains black
- External HDMI monitor shows no signal
- No MSI logo or POST screen
- Booted with SSD removed
- Reseated RAM and tested one stick at a time in each slot
- Booted with battery disconnected
- Attempted external HDMI display
- Performed power reset (battery disconnected, held power button)
- Inspected motherboard visually for damage
- Located several GPU VRM coils labeled R22 near the NVIDIA chip
- The system sometimes initially powers with a white LED before switching to orange
- No BIOS recovery procedure appears to be documented for this model
- MSI support mentioned that a failed discrete GPU could prevent POST
- Has anyone seen a discrete NVIDIA GPU failure on this MS-16R series board cause a complete POST failure like this?
- Is there any known EC reset procedure for the GV15 / MS-16R platform beyond the standard power drain?
- Does anyone know the exact SPI BIOS chip location on this board (possibly labeled U44)?
- Has anyone successfully recovered one of these boards using an external SPI programmer (CH341A)?
Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
