Hi,

sorry for my bad english :-))

i bought last week new components for my pc. There are:

Msi K8T Neo
Athlon64 3000+
Zalman CNPS Cooler
550W Noname PSU :rolleyes: (i know this is not good, but i have it :-)) )

My Sparkle Geforce4 Ti4200 is nearly one year old.

I built in all components, where i didnt get problems. Now i wanted to boot, but the coolers and Hdds got only for 1 second in motion and then the pc turned off himself. I get this problem only with my GF4. The system works with my 10 year-old PCI-Card and in the computer-shop the system runs with an ATI-Radeon-Card.
My GF4 is definitely not broken, because it works cleanly in another PC. In addition to this I also tested the GF4 in my old motherboard (Elitegroup K7S5A) but it didnt work (Pressing on power button does absolutely nothing). But this is not the problem only a statement :-))

Summary: No component is broken, but the combination "msi k8t neo" with "geforce4" doesnt work. But i know somebody in another forum, who has exactly the same components as me, and his system works.

Can you help me plz?
Thanks for answers :-))

PS: My bios version is 1.2, the newest i found on official MSI websites.
PPS: Sorry for the english again :-))

Edit:
I forgot to post my PSU settings:
3.3V -> 32A
5V -> 40A
12V -> 24A
-12V -> 1A
-5V -> 0.5A
+5VSB -> 2A

The Bios shows, that the tensions (is this the right word? :biggrin: ) are a little bit more highly than they should be.

Actually it does work. You may have a setting wrong in Bios or something else like bad card seating or possibly other issues. Make sure you set to boot from and AGP card in Bios and that your set to 4X. If that is not it then you could also be drawing more amps than your PSU can handle. While I am not famialiar with that PSU what is important is whether your unit supplies enough +12v bus amps. You should look at the side of the power supply itself to find out. You should have for a small system at least 18 amps on that bus and maybe more if you have a lot of drives and fans and such that use 12v.

Post your Power Supply specs from that label.

I edited my post and added the specs :-))

It has 24 amps at 12V. I tested the system with only CPU, RAM and the GF4 and i think, for this constellation it should be enough.

Hi

Tiresmoke I think he said it worked in a K7.

I would try another PSU, although you amps look fine, there could be a slight problem with the +12v line which only shows when a bigger load ias applied. If the computer shop can try it with another PSU, that will rule out or in the PSU.

If it does boot, update to the latest drivers. also double check that the GE4 is not touching something, another card or component.

Thx for answers! :-))

The GF4 works in another PC and the board works with another graphics card.

I forgot that in the next room is a pc with an Enermax 350W PSU :rolleyes_anim: I built in this PSU in my comp, but the problem still occurs.
It seems that all components are perfectly.

In the Bios i saw the option "AGP Mode". There i can only choose betwenn 1x, 2x and 4x. In my manual is written that there should be also the option "Auto". In addition to this following sentence: "Select 4x only if your AGP card supports it"
I dont thought about it, because there are more frequently differences between manual and bios. Should i maybe download the bios from msi and flash it, although it is the same version?

In the Bios go to PNP/PCI settings. You will find Primary Graphics Adapter and you need to make sure that is set to AGP. Then reboot. Make sure also that you have installed the VIA 4in1 drivers. Otherwise the system wants to use PCI graphic.

Otherwise I am not sure what else I can tell you.

Hi

Yes, update Bios, a 1.33 version (beta?) is available from MSI japan site

also update drivers, load the latest drivers, they support AGP 8x, I believe. If your card can.

I am using a GEforce4 in this machine, its faster than the Gainward Fx5900 ultra, which I am checking.

The nvidea 53.04 drivers and the Via Hyperion 4 in 1 from VIA should help, use live update first to load bios and latest drivers.

cheers

Can i safely flash a BETA bios?

I've read (in the manual of my old motherboard) about a sector in Bios which can restore a Bios that was crashed by flashing. Is there such a sector at the Msi-board or have i crashed the board definitely (means i can only send in my bioschip) ?

Hi

No its good thinking, but if you see an update on liveupdate, that the one MSI say is for the machine, I don' think it makes much differance, just fewer facilities.

Jocko

I run Live Update, but it didnt found a newer bios version than my actually V1.2

Can u tell me, why i cannot select AGP 8x in bios? There is only 1x, 2x and 4x, but 8x doesnt exist, although the board and graphics card supports 8x? I dont understand this.
