Hello everyone,

I'm really in need of some help as I'm getting desperate with my new PC build. I have looked through other similar threads, but none of the solutions have worked for me. This is a brand new build, and I'm unable to get it to boot. I'm stuck and unsure what to do next, so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. The system won't boot, and I'm seeing solid red and yellow LEDs lit up on the motherboard.

My configuration:

Motherboard:
MSI MAG B650 TOMAHAWK WIFI
CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D
RAM: Kingston Fury Beast 4 x 32GB, 5600 MHz, DDR5 DIMM
PSU: Seasonic Focus GX 1000W

(no graphic card installed)

What I have tried so far:
  • - Attempted to start the system with only two RAM modules in slots 2 and 4 (counting from the left, next to the CPU) and also tried with just one module in slot 2.
  • - Ensured that the DIMM modules were firmly seated by pushing them straight into the slot until the clips clicked into place.
  • - Double-checked that the motherboard power connectors were correctly inserted.
  • - Verified the CPU power connection: the motherboard has two 8-pin connectors, and I have four available on the PSU labeled as CPU/PCI-E. I plugged in the two CPU cables that came with the PSU and tried different combinations, but still no luck.
  • - Inspected the CPU for bent pins several times. I was very careful when installing the CPU, ensuring it was placed vertically and aligned with the golden triangle marker in the top left corner. The pins look fine to me.
  • - Disconnected non-essential case cables (e.g., audio and USB wires) and even removed the M.2 SSD to test if it made a difference (though I'm not sure if this was a useful step).

I'm really puzzled and don't know what else to try. Attaching some pictures also.

Any advice or suggestions would be highly appreciated so thanks in advance!

in addition...after checking other threads, I also tried loosening the screws of the big CPU cooler. I also tried using a single stick of RAM ( testing each of the four modules I have) and placing them in each slot, even though I know the second slot should be used first....unfortunately, nothing changed. :-(

Reset BIOS via clear cmos jumper JBAT1.
https://download.msi.com/archive/mnu_exe/mb/MAGB650TOMAHAWKWIFI.pdf

Also, download latest BIOS and update via Flash BIOS button.

Updating BIOS with Flash BIOS Button
1. Please download the latest BIOS file that matches your motherboard model from the MSI® website.
https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/MAG-B650-TOMAHAWK-WIFI/support
2. Rename the BIOS file to MSI.ROM, and save it to the root of the USB storage device.
3. Connect the power supply to CPU_PWR1 and ATX_PWR1. (No need to install CPU and memory.)
4. Plug the USB storage device that contains the MSI.ROM file into the Flash BIOS Port on the rear I/O panel.
5. Press the Flash BIOS Button to update BIOS, and the LED starts flashing.
6. The LED will be off when the process is completed

Thank you for the suggestion. Unfortunately, it didn’t help. No matter what I do, I’m still getting solid red and yellow LEDs.

I tried resetting the BIOS using the JBAT1 jumper, but it didn’t work. Next, I updated the BIOS to the latest version for my motherboard (7D75v1J), following the instructions carefully. I believe the update was successful, as the LED flashed for about 5 minutes and I noticed the board cycling off.

I even repeated the entire process...from resetting to updating, but had no luck.

At this point, I’m really puzzled. I’m not sure if I did something wrong, if one of the brand new components is defective (or if there is another issue?)
...and if something is defective then I don't know how to figure which component it is.

Anything else I could try to narrow down at the root of the issue....?

I'm seeing solid red and yellow LEDs lit up on the motherboard.
This is actually good
as it indicates Ram's training in progress
How long do you wait before calling it a failed Boot
It can take up to about 10 minutes sometimes to get post

I press the power button , yellow and red lights turn on, I see nothing on screen, few seconds (five ? ) and then I power the PSU off....
are you saying that I have to power it on and just wait?

Wow, the motherboard eventually did POST after a few minutes. 😅 I just had to wait!

My PC building experience is from 10 years ago, and I was used to old-fashioned motherboards that posted almost immediately, so I had no idea how things work nowadays. Lesson learned!

Thank you so much—you saved my week. Thanks again! 😊

I had a similar experience. After 30 years of using Intel I switched to AMD. I bought the MAG X670E TOMAHAWK WIFI motherboard and a Ryzen 7 7800X3D. When I pressed the power button on the PC case, I almost had a heart attack... nothing happened and then suddenly two LEDs—orange and red—stayed on continuously. I was used to MSI motherboards with Intel chipsets, so I was expecting the usual memory and CPU training followed by a restart... but nothing, absolutely nothing, just those two LEDs and a heart attack.
I reset the BIOS. This time, I braced myself for a wait... two LEDs... be patient... two LEDs... be patient - I kept telling myself - ... and then boom, it worked.

I decided to share my AMD story as well because it might just save someone’s life :ROFLMAO:

Hi @TENPATROL

I was actually going to send my MAG B650 Tomahawk Wifi mobo in via RMA because it seemed it was the one thing keeping the PSU from powering up. (Did the paperclip in the PSU cable trick with each component.) But then tried this, and it seemed like it was going to work…

Nothing connected to the mobo but the ATX cable. When I hit BIOS Flash, the PSU powered up (!) and I got the light flashing on the back panel, and the Red & Yellow LEDs lit — it went for about 6 mins, and then restarted itself. Joy!

Only thing is, now I’ve been waiting, ohhh, 4 hours :-) and the LEDs have not changed. NOTE: I did realize the CPU_1 was not plugged in, so I hot-plugged it. Can that make a difference, or does there seem to be something else afoot?

Thanks in advance,

Alan
