Hi everyone,
I’m running into a really confusing issue with an MSI monitor and hoping someone here has seen something similar.
Setup:
- MSI monitor (recent purchase, still under warranty)
- MacBook Pro (Apple silicon, latest macOS)
- Connecting via USB-C → HDMI cable
- Monitor only has HDMI input (no USB-C)
The issue
The monitor powers on and detects an HDMI signal, but the screen stays completely black. What’s strange is that everything does work under certain conditions:
- The monitor works perfectly when connected to other computers (tested at the store with both Windows and Mac)
- My MacBook works perfectly with a TV (no issues)
- My phone connects to the monitor via USB-C and displays fine
- I even had it working once at home briefly
- The monitor detects HDMI input
- Occasionally flickers when changing resolution
- But never actually displays an image
What I’ve already tried
- Multiple HDMI cables (including ones provided/tested at the store)
- Different USB-C ports on my MacBook
- Different wall outlets (multiple rooms)
- Full power cycles (monitor + Mac)
- Changing resolutions and refresh rates in macOS
- “Show all resolutions” and testing lower resolutions (e.g. 1080p, 720p)
- Restarting macOS display system
- Clamshell mode (closing laptop to force external display)
- Disconnecting/reconnecting in different sequences
Key observations
- Monitor clearly receives a signal (does not say “No Signal”)
- Screen stays black despite signal detection
- Same exact setup works in-store but not at home
- Phone → monitor works reliably
- Mac → TV works reliably
Question
Has anyone experienced a similar issue where:- A MacBook works with a monitor in one environment but not another?
- The monitor detects signal but shows a black screen?
- A compatibility issue between macOS and this monitor model?
- Something related to signal format (RGB vs YCbCr, etc.)?
- A firmware issue on the monitor?
Thanks in advance
