Hello everyone. I recently bought an MSI MPG271QRX monitor,

When choosing, I followed the reviews and product description on the MSI website and I have a problem with the description on the manufacturer's website....

In the updates section it was written something like "easy update via USB" And that's right... USB. no word about the need to use DP, I was surprised when the update software informed me about the need to connect DP to perform the update. I don't have a DP port on my laptop, it's the only computer I use. Has anyone successfully updated this monitor using a different connector?

Patryk, MSI website upgrade entry states: "• ONLY use the DP and USB cable in the accessory box to update the firmware to have the right transfer bandwidth and stability. A cable with a convertor does not work." HDMI cable or HDMI to DP are not approved. see here for MSI firmware upgrade guide: https://www.msi.com/blog/msi-monitor-firmware-upgrade-guide

Don't risk bricking your monitor. Get a good DP cable and find a PC or laptop with a DP connection.

Good luck,

I just don't understand why they deliberately mislead potential buyers

Okay, I have one more question to dispel any doubts. are there any requirements for the dp port version in the computer? e.g. if I had access to an older office pc with DP, would that be a problem?

DP version shouldn't matter. Otherwise it would be mentioned in the program or instructions.

I wrote to them a few months ago, they don't seem interested in the topic. My solution was to buy a small office desktop computer on ebay, the update went on without a problem.
How exactly did you perform the update? DisplayPort cable and that’s it? Does the PC you used have a dedicated graphics card?

Why I ask is because I’m getting the MAG 271QPX E2 and apparently that requires a PC with a dedicated graphics card to update the monitors firmware. I don’t have that. I wasn’t aware that it was required. What I do have is a basic Windows 11 mini PC that does have a DisplayPort. MSI support has told me that integrated graphics cannot complete the update. MSI support has also told me that a mini PC can complete the update. I’ve no idea what to do at this point.

I used Lenovo Lenovo ThinkCentre M710q i37100T. I don't think it has anything more than an integrated graphics card

Alright, thanks. That’s interesting too, because their live chat support told me that all of their OLED monitors require a dedicated graphics card to update. It seems like their live chat support is hit-and-miss when it comes to correct information.

Side note: they updated that page you posted earlier. It now states USB and DP.

while I was trying to get help I tried to get to different msi helpdesks. judging by the names of the agents I got to the Polish branch once, the guy said that you can try updating via hdmi and it should work, if it fails I can always use the warranty. well... I had my doubts about it so I didn't try it, but it shows how they work

Yeah, kinda sketchy. Despite what their live chat told me, I’m not going to attempt to update the monitor with a mini PC. I don’t want to potentially brick the monitor. I’ll probably just end up sending the monitor back because I’m not buying a PC with a dedicated graphics card just for updates.

Also, I opened another web ticket and they got back to me, confirming that their live chat gave me incorrect information. Kinda makes you wonder how often that happens.

According to official sources, DisplayPort is the right way forward. But as you were told over live chat, HDMI may also work. Which I can neither confirm nor deny to be true, or false ;)
I asked my contact to add the "DP" to the page - avoids confusion and frustrations at least a little bit.
Also dedicated graphics is not required. Just the Display Port. But if you don't have a DP, it may not hurt much to try HDMI or any other port if the update will bring some sort of fix - MSI warranty on monitors is great in Europe (speaking from experience).

MSI live chat told me that all of their OLED monitors require a dedicated graphics card to complete firmware updates. But they’ve been wrong before, so who knows.

Let me ask someone whom I trust more than live chat..
Yeah, I haven’t had much luck with their live chat, unfortunately. They told me that about all MSI OLED monitors, and also confirmed that I could update the MAG 271QPX E2 monitor firmware with an AMD mini PC that has integrated graphics. It turns out that’s absolutely incorrect, so their info about all of their OLED monitors requiring a dedicated graphics card to update could be wrong as well.

Yeah so officially only dedicated graphics cards are supported, and only Nvidia RTX30XX/AMD RX50XX and newer.
This is what I think they tested, possibly older or different cards will also work but not guaranteed to work.

Either way, officially that is what you need. Unofficially other devices may or may not work.
Alright, thanks for the info. Maybe I should look into their other monitors, even if they’re a bit more expensive. Due to how the MAG 271QPX E2 updates, I don’t think it’s for me since I’m unable to update it.

Do the MAG 271QPX and the MPG 271QRX update the same way? Do they also require a dedicated graphics card, or would a mini PC with integrated graphics and DisplayPort work? That’s all I currently have access to.
