Hi,

I have (had) a build using a P55-CD53 mother board and an i7-860 and two 2gb sticks of RAM. Everything has been working fine for the last 8 months then today while playing flight simulator the computer just shut down and rebooted.

Now it won't POST at all or show anything on the monitor

All fans running, never hung or rebooted that would suggest a heating issue. This has me completely confused and I am not sure where to start.

I tried removing the ram and re installing one stick at a time.

I've never done any overclocking

and not sure it is any help but i am only seeing one cpu phase LED whereas in the manual it says i should be seeing 2, 3 or 4 lights.

Any help would be really appreciated.

Bad power supply?

What power supply do you have? What graphics card do you have?

Some more information about the exact hardware you're using would be helpful. >>Posting Guide<<

Thanks Mark,

Here is some more information
# Intel I7-860 2.80Ghz
# MSI P55-CD53
# Kingston,1333, 2G, two sticks
# EVGA, Nvidia 8800GT, 512MB
# 4x Hard drives Wester Digital (WD) 160GB, WD 640GB, WD 1.5TB, 500GB
# Wireless network card, Two Sata DVD Drives,
# Windows 7 64bit
# PSU OCZ 600 watts (5V/25A, 3.3V/25A, 12V1/25A, 12V2/25A)

Try to clear CMOS first, then try booting with only one piece of RAM and see if it boots well.

I tried clearing the CMOS, and then booting with one stick of ram but still nothing.

Earlier i did try booting with one stick of ram, and then the other in slot 1 but still nothing

Try reseating the CPU and HSF. With the processor out, check for any signs of damage on the CPU and CPU socket, as well as checking for bent pins.

Good thing to check at the same time since the CPU is out. Check for signs of damage all the same.

Try one just the boot hard drive connected.
Try reseating the graphics card.
Try another graphics card.
Try with another power supply (of equal of greater power).

Hi

Just tried almost everything suggested but still no POST. no signs of damage or bent pins. The only thing i haven't tried is the PSU replacement since i don't have an alternate PSU to try.

I don't know anyone that has one but i do know someone who can test my power supply for me so will try that today. Does the fact that i am getting only CPU phase light #1 on mean i am having a power issue?

I'm thinking because it happened during a game it could easily be the power supply that has failed, since the computer will draw most power during this time. If this is the case, you really need to test another power supply to properly diagnose this.

It could easily otherwise be a faulty motherboard or CPU. Testing another CPU in the motherboard (or your CPU in someone elses motherboard) would give an indication of whether the CPU is at fault. If still no life then it's looking more likely the motherboard is dead.

I see what you mean about the phase LEDs. I'm not sure what it means to have just 1 lit up, because as you say, the manual shows 2, 3 or 4 LEDs but not just 1. Perhaps MSI can answer that for you: >>How to contact MSI<<.

Do you have a speaker connected to hear the beep codes? It may help to know if it beeps at all.

Hi again,

I rememberd today that I had an old case at home with a motherboard and cpu still in it with RAM so i tried the power supply in there.

I plugged in the power supply to the main board and switched  it on and it went.

POP FIZZ FIZZ SPARK SMOKE SMOKE SMOKE

Soooooo, I am thinking it just might be that pesky ole power supply.

I am getting a new one delivered today since there is no way on gods green earth i'm using that power supply again anyway. Will keep you posted on if it works.

Sounds like it may have been the power supply then. Hopefully the motherboard and CPU weren't damaged too.

I had a similar problem after i changed the power supply. at first the computer started then it hung
then it refused to start and gave the same problem where it refused to post. the times it started it didn't give any beep errors. just said everything was normal and moved on. i suspect there may be an issue on the motherboard.
I went ahead and bought a new motherboard AND cpu to put this all behind me. I'm keeping the old cpu though as i suspect nothing is wrong with it and I will use it in another machine if it checks out. with the new board and chip everything is back up and running and no other components seem to be faulty.

Thanks EVERYONE for all the help through this

Alan

I'd say the old power supply probably took out the motherboard as well then. At least you've got a working system now though.
