Hello all,

I have brought this motherboard back in Apr 2022 and have a Intel 12400F Cpu installed. I been using the Bios that it came with(I assume) which it currently states MS-7D59 BIOS 1.20.

My only question is I recently installed additional two 8gb Sticks so totaling to 32 gb ram, all the same type and etc. but I haven't noticed anything crazy of a difference. I was wondering would updating my bios somehow improve some sort of ram compatibility or anything else? I'm having 0 issues so far in current BIOS Version. was just wondering if I should update it to the most up to date version or any other recommended version as I couldn't find anything online in terms of what's the best one.

Thanks alot!

mix different ram together is a bad idea. Luckily you don't see any problem. Honestly, i'll say stay with the version that works for you. Don't update BIOS unless you have a good reason for it.

I mentioned "I recently installed additional two 8gb Sticks so totaling to 32 gb ram, all the same type and etc."

Even the same Exact Make/Model of RAM is mixing if got anywhere over like 3 months apart as they tend to Change the RAM Chips on the modules very Regularly and even the same chip maker may alter them based on how they where manufactured with different Sub-Timings so its still RAM MIXING.

the more you know! thanks!

Maybe thats why the XMP wasnt working? because i had to do it manually in the settings

You should use at least 7D59v1I, v12 is way too old and has tons of known bugs, see here, https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/PRO-B660-A-DDR4/support

They tend to improve memory support in newer versions too. Although the previous replies are correct, it would've been better to replace your 2x 8 GB with a kit of 2x 16 GB instead, also see my thread RAM explained: Why two modules are better than four / single- vs. dual-rank / stability testing.

Now, with v1I you'd have the security issue fixed, but even though v1J and v1K deal mainly with true 13th/14th gen degradation issues, they might still have fixed some other stuff which isn't listed, so i'd go right to the latest v1K. Then try again to run XMP. With that version you have the best chance for it to work on the BIOS side (which is just one factor in the memory system, but at least that).

Now, i would also lower the mode for a BIOS setting called "CPU Lite Load", see here: Guide: How to set good power limits in the BIOS and reduce the CPU power draw

With your board+CPU combo, you will be limited in how far you can lower the mode before the performance will plummet, but usually you can easily set Mode 12 at least, instead of whatever high mode it defaults to on the latest BIOS. Normally it won't kill your performance above Mode 9 or 10. Below that, on a B-series board with a 12400F, yeah, it might put on the brakes. Check with Cinebench (score) and in HWinfo you can see what improvements that setting can achieve for the power draw under load.
