Before I get flamed I just want to say that I HAVE searched this problem, but could not seem to find a definite answer, so please don't yell too loudly.

Anyways, I have an MSI pro, and I can't get the S3 Standby state to work.? The computer goes into Standby, but when I turn it back up (with the power button, or mouse, or keyboard when I have it enabled) the computer starts up but nothing is displayed on the screen, it is not even receiving a signal.? The keyboard lights also don't light up (Numlock, etc).? I have tried adjusting bios settings till my face is blue, same with the Windows XP settings.? I have the latest ATI drivers for my 4870x2.? Any help would be much appreciated.? The only way to fix it is pull the plug or hold the power button down for 6 seconds until it shuts down. Oh, and I have bios Version 7.0.

Thanks.

Windows XP SP 2
MSI Pro BIOS 7.0
Core i7 920 OCed to 3.66GHz
ATI 4870x2
Creative Fatal1ty x-fi
6 Gigs DDR3 RAM
1.5 TB HDD
Optical Drive
950 Watt PSU (amps? I have no idea....how do I find out?)

Umm, hopefully this is correct, on the sticker under "Current" it says "11A"  Under DC output there is also a bunch of amperages ranging from 15 to 30A.
Here is the newegg link:  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817159072  It is a Coolmax CUG-950B  950 watt PSU

UPDATE: I just flashed BIOS to version 7.10 and same problem.  Once again tried a whole bunch of settings with nothing working.
UPDATE 2: Using the MSI Live update tool, it says there are no Mainboard drivers, BIOS, or VGA  Card Drivers to download.

Here's your amps; +3.3V@30A, +5V@30A, +12V1@20A, +12V2@20A, +12V3@25A, +12V4@25A

The 3 X58 Pros I've helped build do that same thing. I just hit the case 'Reset Switch' button.

Just a suggestion, to make it easier for the users from having to scroll up all the time, listing all your system components in a 'signature' like NJ's, Svet's, & mine, helps a bunch.

Guess maybe it's time to place a ticket with MSI Tech. Support. Others may have this problem as well.

The amp ratings are listed under each of the voltage rails(+3.3V, +5V, +12V1, +12V2, etc.)

This is what MSI told me after I emailed them:

"Please try with another video card swap out and retest. Be sure the system has a fresh/clean OS installation and follow by updated chipset and device driver installations and follow by SP3 updates and all Microsoft updates and retest with the S3 feature."

A lot good that does me...I don't have another video card I can try...I am using a clean OS install...and SP3 probably won't fix anything, that seems to be just a generic suggestion.  What would SP3 do for me anyways?  Seems like this is a motherboard issue anyways....

Man these guys reply quickly.  This time they said

"What kind of memory are you running? How many modules and what speed?"

Hi!
I have exactly the same problem as knexkid.
My system:
MSI X58 Pro (BIOS 7.1), Core i7 920, GTX260, 6GB DDR3 1333, bequit 550 Dark Power Pro PSU, Vista Business x64.
My CPU is running at a BCLK of 175. But what I found out is, that S3 does work, if the CPU is not overclocked.
I tried various BCLK-Speeds testing if S3 works or not.
133 S3 works, 140 S3 works, 150 and higher S3 doens't work.
It would be interesting to know if knexkid's PC shows the same behaviour.
If that's the case, MSI's answer doesn't help much.
I think that some clock (QPI, Uncore Clock, etc.), that is depending on the BCLK is running out of it's specification and causes this behaviour.
Anyone any further ideas?  :)

Howdy, tonight when I get home I will try to put my CPU at the default speed and see if s3 works and report back.  What doesn't make sense is why would overclocking prevent standby from working??

My system is similar to yours, just different power supply, and I'm using OCZ 12GB ram. My S3 works perfectly in Vista Ultimate x64. I'm not running this system overclocked, CPU standard specs.

Does hibernate work?

Hibernation doesn't work on Windows-PCs with more than 4GB of RAM.
It makes no sense to send a PC to hibernate, when waking up from hibernation takes much more time (cause of the size of the hibernation file) than to boot from cold.

Well, I tried reverting back to the default clocks (I actually just put everything on default in the BIOS) and I am still getting my problem. Doesn't seem to be related to the overclocking.  I guess I will just have to deal with S1 standby (which is pointless since it doesn't turn fans off.....).

Create a ticket with MSI. If this truly is an issue that can be fixed with a bios update, the more who inform MSI, the sooner it can be addressed.  I'm not stating that it is a bios issue or an update will fix it, but if it is, you need to inform MSI.

I have been in contact with them and they have been really good about getting back to me.  They told me to mess with RAM and settings, install updates, etc etc.  The last thing they told me was "We are going to try to reproduce this produce this problem in the lab and get back to you."  I have a feeling I won't hear back from them anymore......but hopefully they can fix it!

Also random off topic-ness. I finally got my OC where I want it.....OCed to 3.66GHz plus Turbo Boost.  I am happy.  Can't run Prime95 for a really long time before it dies....but gaming tests (which is what I do, game game and more games) run just fine.

Prime95, orthos, etc. are better measures of stability than games.  But, if we're going to go off into another issue, you should start a new topic.  The S3 issues should be addressed with standard settings.

same for me, S3 works at stock speed

I just read the following from OC forums which concurrs with what was said above

http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=602216
The ability to S3 Sleep an overclocked CPU depends upon the motherboard. With an i7 920 cpu running at 190 bus speed, the Gigabyte UD5 will successfully S3 sleep, but the EVGA X58 and the original Asus P6T will not reliably S3 sleep. Sometimes a BIOS upgrade can make the difference. One technique to use is a motherboard utility which allows you to change the overclock speed from within Windows. The Abit IP35 Pro worked great if teamed up with the right uguru version. Unfortunately, i7 mobos and cpus don't seem to offer the flexibility to jump between full overclock and stock speed. With most i7 mobos, the system will freeze if you try to jump through the 150-160 bus speed area.

So sadly for me and others, X58 Pro falls within the realm of "most i7 mobos"
