Hi, I'm new the forum and I'm helping a friend of mine fix his MSI Raider laptop. I have quite a bit of experience fixing computers but this one is stumping me a bit.

When powering on the laptop if I get a display on the screen it will only come on for a second or two then power off. I tried a brand new power cord. I have removed and re-added one at a time each stick of RAM. I also installed a different M.2 drive and did all this with and without the battery plugged in. The farthest I can get is by pressing F2 and it will boot to the screen and say the boot failed and re-start go launch the troubleshooting menu. Before I could press anything it powered off again. I help down the power button for 30 and seconds with the battery and power cord unplugged. I also unplugged the plugged the CMOS battery back in again.

Not sure if it would be the CPU possibly or something else. Thanks for any help!

This says all (and nothing).
Code:
I have a car. Something is broken. How useful is this information for you?
If you want help you should provide useful information. A good start would be to tell us the model of the Laptop.
I was going to provide that but the model sticker on the bottom has worn off unless there is another way to lookup the model?

HwInfo, System Information Viewer, MsInfo32, many more.
msinfo32 should be installed because it is a Windows tool.
The MSI Center has also some information somewhere (sorry cannot be more explicit because I'm on my Linux system).

It's still open. The number on the motherboard must be under something such as the cooler. I have attached a pic of the layout. Should I go ahead and remove the cooling assy.?

Should I go ahead and remove the cooling assy.?
I don't know. Better not. Maybe somebody here can identify the board.
The fans look clean, what is with the exhausts?
What happened to the battery?
Is a date printed on the battery?

If you plan to repaste the Laptop .....

I unplugged the battery to make sure I don't short circuit something. I don't see any dates on the battery either.

Anyone else able to identify the board? I can take apart if needed. Thanks.

This looks like a Raider GE78 laptop. You can confirm the model on the back-cover or if you can enter BIOS it is displayed there.

Does the battery charging indicator light turns on when you plug it to a power source?

Hi, thanks for your reply! Unfortunately the sticker on the bottom is worn off and the laptop only powers on for 1-2 seconds then it powers down again. I wasn't sure if I removed the cooling assy. if that would show any numbers that might help or maybe they are under the battery?

The power light blinks orange about 9 times then white a few. Sometimes I can get a quick glimpse of the screen.

Thanks for the info but I've tried holding down the power button multiple times for 30 and 60 seconds. Unplugging the battery and even the CMOS battery. The MSI logo just flashes real quick is all it does.

Also, the left cooling fan will run for about 10 sec. or so then turns off while the power button is flashing white and orange.

This can have a lot of reasons, a faulty charger, a broken board and maybe more.
I guess that you don't have the tools to check and test all the components.
In my opinion the best way forward is to give it to a repair center or to somebody who has the tools and the knowledge to check the Laptop.

Hi, you got the laptop this way, right? One can remove all the memory chips & the SSD drives & it will still go into the Bios program. The slots will just come up as empty, nor can it boot.
A bad processor will give numerous errors trying to boot a computer. The number one is failure to boot. Yes a processor can burn out from overheating issues. It might be able to boot, then fails.
When my processor failed the "orange" light was on all the time, most of all the laptop was very very hot while it was trying to boot.

Yes, after trying to boot multiple times I can feel over the area where the CPU is and and it's so warm I can hardly touch it. I have stripped all the parts down, the HD, RAM, battery, etc... but if I'm lucky the MSI logo might flash on the screen is all.

If I shut the screen and flip the laptop over I can see that one and sometimes both cooling fans are running so it seems like the motherboard itself would be ok.

Don't be sure that the board is ok. Modern computers are very complicated creatures / devices. Compare it with a car. Some parts can be broken but they do not affect other parts.
The engine may run but the air conditioning not. You can still use the car. A failure / error in the braking system .....

Thanks everyone. I'm going to assume there is a problem with the motherboard then. My friend did admit he accidentally spilled some sticky liquid on the laptop a few weeks ago but it did work for a bit after that so maybe it corroded the motherboard somewhere too since that time.

This had can avoided if he or you did react on time. But I assume you got the information too late. :(
