Looking for advice on drives. Is the SSD in this laptop a good one if not what would you upgrade too. I have a 970 evo plus from another computer would that be better? Also there is a 2.5 slot for I am assuming a storage drive. Any recommendations for that drive?

I always buy Samsung for the main drive and use either Samsung or WD for the second drive if available, M.2 slot.
970 EVO is a great choice, you can't go wrong with EVO or PRO series from Samsung.
I normally purchase SEAGATE or WD for a HDD SATA for 2.5" or 3.5", but nowadays I always use SATA SSDs on 2.5", again I prefer Samsung and WD for SSDs.

Tech support is telling me that the A11UD-428 won't support a second drive. Do you have a 2.5 running in yours?

Yes, there is a 2.5 slot and I have a 870 evo in there

Only 1x M.2 slot, you need 11UE for 2x M.2.
