I have an MSI Vector 16 HX A14VGG-279IN, i7 14700HX, RTX 4070 (140W), 32GB Ram.... Whenever I start a game after about 3 - 5 mins it just switches off, I've monitored the temps and it's between 85 to 87Celsius. Also thought about using throttle stop... just don't know what values to use... this issue started on Feb 2026. before then there were no frequent issues. Somebody help me fix this so that i can start gaming again, I've also set everything in the BIOS to default... usb peripherals include a drawing tablet, a portable monitor, a mouse

Try to clean install the Nvidia graphics driver first, use the previous version on Nvidia website or the version on MSI website.
Also, try to check in MSI Center - Live update, the Intel DTT and IPF driver should be installed as the MSI website provided.

Tried everything, still the problem persists. This is so frustrating man :(. All are up to date

Which version of Nvidia graphics driver is on the laptop currently?
Would the problem occur with the AC adapter connected or only with battery power? If the problem only occurs with battery power, you would need to check the battery health.
And since the issue started from Feb, 2026, did you ever update or upgrade anything at that time? e.g., BIOS update, or upgrading larger memory/SSD, etc.

Driver is 595.97, AC adapter is always connected while I game, battery last for about 1 and half to 2 hrs while browsing, never touched BIOS but i did check (while trying to resolve this issue) and there weren't any updates, didn't upgrade anything

PS: I reinstalled (clean installed) everything even the MSI center and managed to play the game, My dream setup (because i didn't want to test with anything to graphic intensive game) for about 10 mins before the problem came back.

Hello,

Use hardware monitor check the temperatures as you play, try windowed mode so you can see what is going on at the same time before it switches off.

Hardware monitor download

CPUz download

How to clear the stats in hardware monitor
HWM_CLR_1.jpg

When playing a game you need to look at most of these but for shutdown issues (if temperature related) focus on the following.

  1. PCH temperature (This is the laptop motherboard chipset temperature)
  2. P-Cores
  3. E-Cores
  4. Package

  5. GPU
  6. Memory (This is the GPU memory)
  7. Hotspot

Easy test for CPU only
Try running CPUz and choose the benchmark mode so you can check how everything looks, then clear the log before you try your game in windowed mode.
If your PCH is running hot it will be an issue, 90 degC is common to some laptops but once you are at or over this it's unstable. <110 degC is a critical point which will force a shutdown.

same issue for msi rider 18.. shout down.... before i have vector 18 same issue . WHO FIX THIS PROBLEMM _???? ENOUGH REALLY ENOUGH... our system closed after 5-10 min... i send service VECTOR18. than they change my laptop too rider18 SAME PROBLEMS SAME ISSUES power button changed orange too white. but i used only with rtx5070ti. try everything... alll MSI computer like this? i will never buyy again msi. we did everything.. bios update bla bla bla.... and clean setup even buyy windows 11 pro for pay. i think maybe problem about windows but NAH.

Hi. I am interested in your problems about the random shutoff. I also have a random shutoff once. Having a laptop temp between 85 to 87Celsius seems normal to me especially if your laptop is sitting flat on the table. The cold air is required to bring in from the bottom of the laptop to blow hot air out from the side. Having a stand or a book lifting the laptop up by angle allowing more air to be blow inside.

Do you mind showing us your "view reliability history" like this?

Like now days, Windows update and drivers are buggy as hell because of Vibecoding/ AI Hype and windows 11 tends to auto updating without warning. The crashing may happening because just so happen due to a fault driver is being automatically updated by Windows Update. It is no longer plug and play in current age of laptop computer. You may required to know more about "How does the computer work? Why is it crashing?". There is no full solution to fix "why computer crash". Every "crash" is different and unique. If you want to receive helps, its best to ask ai "how to provide windows crash information so that people can help?"

these are the temp values while I "Played" the game for 5 mins 😢

Hmm, this is not good as your CPU is too hot including the PCH for 5 mins of gameplay.
The CPU can peak to 100 at times at default settings, the more important reading would be the current value as you are in game, like this screenshot if it is in game and showing 93 DegC when you are minimised it's hot.

There are a few things you can try to see what happens.
1) Limit the CPU boost frequency to see what happens, If this keeps the CPU cool but still crashes due to the PCH temperature you will know the cause of the shutdown.
2) If it does not crash but the PCH remains high / same it would indicate the CPU was your issue.

The easiest option to test the above is to disable the CPU Boost clock, this will limit performance but the point is just to see what happens.

Open the registry and go here.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power\PowerSettings\54533251-82be-4824-96c1-47b60b740d00\be337238-0d82-4146-a960-4f3749d470c7

Boost_Power_2-1024x618.jpg

Change the Attributes option to 2. (double click on it then edit)

After making the change, open your power plan settings and you will find a new option to disable boost mode.
Boost_Power_4.jpg

Make sure you do that for the profile you use during gaming, this should keep the performance cores to 2.1GHz <and temperatures for the CPU should be no more than 75-80 DegC like this. Test this mode whilst checking with hardware monitor to find the max temperatures during gaming and if it crashes too. (clear the min / max before you try this)

Hopefully it's not the PCH temperature causing the shutdown as this is difficult to cool on your laptop.
So try like that and see how hot the CPU is after 5 mins and if it crashes.

So i didn't do exactly this, but i changed the maximum processor state of both On battery and Plugged in to 99% and it works but this happens:

Is it a complete freeze or just the laptop screen glitching?
Does your laptop have the option in MSI centre to set the nvidia GPU as the primary display?
Or using the nvidia control panel, optimus mode / set it to use the nvidia GPU?

Something like this

I have similar crashes with my Vector 16 hx ai a2xwig.
I just RMAed it. I'm waiting for service decision now. I think, you should RMA your laptop too. Disabling turbo boost mode or do any other cpu performance restrictions are kinda stupid actions. Because you PAID for that features.
