HI all.

Upgraded today from a 3600 to a 5800x3d and kept my mobo the same. MSI x470 gaming max plus.

Got it to boot but noticed it syas it's running at 3.4ghz whereas i was lead to believe it can go up to 4.5ghz max.

Ram is running ok at 3600mhz still.

Looked at BIOS and i have the latest official BIOS that was released in 2022 installed. There is a beta bios that came out last month.

Do you think this will make a difference and are beta BIOS pretty safe to use?

Thanks in advance.

Where do you see the 3.4 GHz? You mean in the top left of the BIOS screen? The CPU frequency shown in the BIOS is always the base frequency, which is completely irrelevant.
The CPU will boost much higher in Windows later, and should clock much lower for power-saving in idle, so you hardly ever see the 3.4 GHz base frequency in practical use.

Of course, if you see it in something like HWinfo64 Sensors during appropriate load, that would be a different story. But again, if you're only looking at the Windows task manager, that's not a good tool to check the frequencies.

I doubt that it's an issue of the last stable BIOS vs. the beta. In general, they often make the very last BIOS a beta for older boards, in order not to be bothered by support questions about it. Or in case of a fix of a potential security flaw, they might have rushed it out without it having completed all the usual testing, because they deemed the added security of higher importance. It's not like the beta BIOS is full of bugs or anything, usually it should work fine.

Yes sorry i see the 3.4ghz in Windows. I only checked as it feels slightly slower than my 3600 on the desktop.

I played a game, Warzone 2.0, for 30 minutes and there was an increase in FPS of around 30% over the 3600 at 1440p.

It just feels 'slow' in general use, surfing etc.

For general use and surfing, it should make very little difference which of those two CPUs you have. Without a direct comparison, our mind can sometimes play tricks on us.

Well, worst comes to worst, you'd have to update to the beta BIOS and then maybe do a fresh install of Windows. I would be very surprised if it still felt slower then.

Well i just downloaded Prime 95 and CPU Core temp, ran them side by side for 10 minutes just to have a look and you are right.

It started at around 3.4ghz , temp in the 30s and after 10 minutes it had reached 4.45ghz and a max temp in the high 70's.

Not sure why surfing has gone slow but at least i know it's working correctly.

Thanks for your help.

If you have a spare SSD for example, you could do a fresh test installation of Windows to it, to see if it has anything to do with the Windows config, drivers and such.
I mean the apparent sluggishness for surfing etc.

When i first booted it wouldn't go past the BIOS. A quick google suggested moving from UEFI to CSM mode. I did that and booted instantly and been ok since.

Would that have any effect? Being honest i don't understand what they are.

See here and follow the link in there: https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?threads/initial-boot-error.385062/#post-2184551

Basically, the BIOS has to be in the more modern UEFI mode for Win11, it's a hard requirement. So if you are able to do a fresh install of Windows, on the newest BIOS version in UEFI mode, that would take care of every potential BIOS- and software-related issue in one fell swoop. I'd even install Win11 then (accepts an older license key, or rather, should activate itself once it goes online, because the same hardware was activated with Win10 before).

No, that was obvious, Win11 would not boot with the BIOS in CSM mode. I'm just saying, if you were to do a fresh install of Windows, i'd do it with the BIOS in UEFI mode and then you can install Win11 right away. By the way, with the combination of these two tools, you can make it look and feel like Win10 (or even Win7):
