MSI X58 Platinum SLI won't boot with 12 GB present

Ok.  Here is the problem.  I can?t get my computer to post when there are 12 GB present.  It will not post to the bios and keeps restarting every 30 seconds or so (no beep codes).  I have tested all the RAM with Memtest and using another computer (all passed ok).  Also, I have updated my bios to the latest version (3.6). 
I have tried a lot of different settings such as manually setting the voltage, relaxing the timing (originally set to auto), and adjusting the advance settings of RAM.  I do not over clock anything in the machine and the RAM is trying to boot at 1066.  If only 6 GB is present in the machine, the motherboard will boot (it gives me a message that over clocking failed from when I tried to boot with 12 GB). 

I am out of ideas of what to try.  The motherboard claims that that its capacity is 24 GB so I am well below that at 12 GB.  Also, because the RAM works on another machine, passes mem test, and boots with either 6 GB pack in the machine, I doubt it?s the RAM.

Any ideas?  Is there something I need to do inside the bios before it will accept 6 GB or more? (Please let me know if you need more info)

Okay.  RAM speed is def set at DDR3-1066 (set manually).  I will try raising the DRAM voltage to 1.6 when i get home but i don't think it would boot when even 6 GB is present at 1.6 (RAM says 1.65).  (will check again) (currently set to auto)

I didn't see an option to disable spread spectrum.  Where is this option normally?  I will look when i get home.

Thanks for such a fast reply!  Wish I was near my desktop to try this out!  Let you know tonight.

It should be located in the Cell Menu (you may have to scroll down).

About your memory problems:

Please also make sure that the memory Command Rate is set to 2T in BIOS Setup.

Ok.  I made sure the RAM speed was manually set to DDR3-1066, set the DRAM voltage to 1.6, disabled spread spectrum, and manually set the command rate (called "1N / 2N Memory Timinig " inside my bios) to 2N which i think is the same as 2T.  The only choices on the command rate 1N / 2N / 3N / Auto.

Computer still does not post with 12GB Ram.  It will start up but never shows the bios and just keep turning off every 30 seconds.  However, as it did before, it will post with 6 GB present (with settings above).


Man , i really want my 12 gigs. (do a lot of VM for for job).

With 8 GB, I know it won't boot.  I did not however try with 10 GB although i doubt it will work.  Any other suggestions?  (I will try with 10 GB tonight though)

You have 2 sets of the triple channel RAMs, right? How about switching the set of RAMs and see if the other set works fine?

No matter what i do, the problem exists.  I tested the RAM and they are good.  I have literally spent hours changing bios settings to try and get this to work.  I have now sent back the other patriot ram I bought for refund.  I am planning on selling my current Patriot RAM and buying a different brand to see if it works.  If the different brand does not work, then I am planning on RMA the board.  If all of that doesn't work, i am never buying MSI again!
