Hi there, i was hoping to update my Bios to 1.5b1 from 1.3 on my p965 platinum, but i dont have a floppy drive, so i would need to use CD. Any help on how to create the Bios disk and what to do once it's been made would be appreciated.

P.S. I do know about the dangers of flashing the Bios, but would like to update anyway.

Thanks

hi there,

you can find guides(flashing from USB key & flashing from CD/DVD) here: (check links there)
https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=105321.msg799331#msg799331

Hi, i look at those guides earlier today, even made a CD Bios disk, but when i tried to use it i got as far as the A:\> prompt typed in Afud408, it then brought up a screen with different commands but i don't know what to do from there, any suggestions.

you need to type name of the bios file along with flash name utility(afud408) as well.
example:

A:\>Afud408  A7238IMS.151      [then hit ENTER key]

where A7238IMS.151 is the name of your bios file.

:cry:Hi Bosskiller, got a problem, the Bios update went ok from start to finish, when it got back to the A:\> prompt i switched computer off, removed the cmos battery, and now when i switch the computer on it boots for about 1/2 second then restarts, seems to be a psu problem, any ideas?.

"and now when i switch the computer on it boots for about 1/2 second then restarts"
what you mean by restart? check all power cables ensure they are filled well.
power down PC, remove power cord from the PSU and Clear CMOS Guide

Hi, tried that and it 's still the same. I mean't the psu switches on then off then on then off, but it only powers up for about half a second before restating itself. Checked all the cables and they seem to be ok. My psu is a Hiper Type-R 580 watt, do you think it has died.

"My psu is a Hiper Type-R 580 watt, do you think it has died."
yep its 1st suspected, but there can be other reasons too. like:
* mainboard is shorted somewhere, or damaged. (due psychical damage or Electrostatic discharge (ESD) )
* missing some crucial power cable.
* can be case power switch malfunction too.
* PSU failure (most suspected)
* check and ensure CPU FAN is connected to the mainboard. (if CPU FAN mainboard connector is a empty board is checking that at startup and auto powerdown to prevent damage. (same sympton power for 1/2 of second and turn off)

try with better PSU, single rail with high amperes on +12V
take mainboard of PC case, use barabone setup(with minimum components) and retry to boot.

Thanks, i have a crappy 480 watt psu that i used last year, when my last psu died, before i got this Hiper, will try that tomorrow when finished work, will let you know how i got on.

Hi, i changed the power supply and it made no difference, i tested the hiper without the motherboard and it stayed on, so i guess that rules out the power supply. I switched the power button cable with the reset button cable and using the reset as power on to eliminate that being the cause, still no joy. I have taken the board out of the case and stripped it down to just the cpu and fan, nothing else, it still does the same thing, on for about half second stops then restarts then stops, continuosly. The cpu fan spins and the psu fans spin and stop whenever it restarts. Beginning to think i may have killed the board, any other suggestions.

check the battery, ensure its filled in correct direction and not shorted somewhere.

Checked the battery again, it seems ok, and swapped it with the battery in my other comp, still no difference.

try to boot without VGA, see if it will be the same e.g. on/off for 1/2 of sec, or will start beep as expected.
if no change RMA the board if its under warranty.

Sorry, should have said the board doesn't get a chance to beep, and tried to boot board without vga, still no change. Will i still be able to RMA the board, even after i flashed the BIOS with a beta bios.

"will i still be able to RMA the board, even after i flashed the BIOS with a beta bios."
basically no, warranty gone when using beta bios, but depend of your re seller will accept it or not. also often re seller sell or after RMA the board comes with beta BIOS onboard from re seller.
so its the matter of luck and depend of your local reseller will accept the warranty or not.

you can try to re program your BIOS with the last good known worked version.
you will need to take BIOS chip out(if its removable)(details "how to", can be found here: https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=107934.msg799482#msg799482)
found programmer: https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=101693.msg742448#msg742448
other options:
BadFlash / FlashBios / upgradestore.co.uk
if its a BIOS fail board should back to live, but i have doubt about that, but you can have try it anyway.

Cheers, looks like it's going to be a new board then, oh well, thanks for everything.
you are welcome.
few future tips:

about BIOS update there is nothing to comment since you already known the risk when starting this thread.

always remove power cord from the PSU and touch some metal with hands before starting to doing anythink inside PC case:
(also no need to take out the battery, just Clear CMOS via jumper by described way.)

power down your PC, remove power cord from the PSU, hit few time power button to drain electrify from capacitors, touch some metal with hands to discharge any ES which you may have, then open the case and Clear CMOS then pull back power cord, and turn on your PC, will be notice CMOS CHEKSUM MISMATCH/ERROR, hit F1 to continue to rebuild DMI Pool Data, then reboot your PC, and enter in BIOS and LOAD BIOS DEFAULT, SAVE AND EXIT, go back to BIOS and apply your customs settings.

safest instruction are described in each mainboard manual as well.

Hi, one last quick question before i order a new board, if the cpu was dead would the motherboard boot up but tell me there was something wrong with cpu, thanks again.
