Hi everybody,

built a new system a few days ago including a MSI RTX 3090 Suprim X. Other specs include an ASUS ROG Strix Z490 Gaming-E Mobo, an i7-10700k AIO watercooled, 32 GB G.Skill Trident Z DDR4 3200 CL14 RAM.
The PSU is a Corsair HM1200i Platinum. All 3 8pins on seperate lines, no cable splitting. Everything runs stock except the memory which is on XMP1 Profile.
My problem is that, whatever I fire at the GPU (Cyberpunk2077, CoD BOCW both in UWQHD maxed out, Superposition Benchmark) according to HWMonitor the GPU caps at 360 watts. That's nowhere near the promoted 420 (450) watts. Results are that I'm 1500-2000 points behind people with similar PC specs in the before mentioned benchmark. The CPU hits 5100 mhz in the 60°C range, while the GPU tops in the low 70's temperature wise.
The vBIOS modes Silent/Gaming change nothing in that regard. I checked the vBIOS versions and got 2 figures which I can find nothing about on dr. google.
The Versions are:
Silent: 94.2.42.0.f4 and Gaming: 94.2.42.0.f5
Did a second clean Win10 Pro install after I installed MSI Dragon Center with the first install, because I had the feeling that this messed things up even more.....but still no changes.
Anyone an idea or similar experiences with the 3090 Suprim X? Could this be vBIOS related? I don't think that the Corsair is not providing enough power to run the GPU properly.

Every input is highly appreciated!

Regards

Lou

Thank you,
but actually this is not a fine tuning problem. 420 watts is a promoted performance stat by MSI. This power limit it needs to reach out of the box without any effort on my side. If I do not miss something here with my setup then something seems to be wrong on the GPU side. In this case I have to RMA the card.
Anyone reading here who also got his card recently with the same vBIOS?

Some things to consider:
- Actual BIOS version (example in my signature), not a version of a NVIDIA-generic part that is most likely the same for all 3090s regardless of manufacturer or model.
- Render scaling
- Actual pull per connector

I can easily push my 3090 Suprim X to 450W* (or a bit above, according to monitoring software) by starting a game in 3440x1440 and ramping up the render scale to 200% (namely, rendering at 6880x2880), which pushes the card to 100% utilization.
If I am using 3440x1440 as is, I do find that depending on the game engine, the card might sit at lower clocks and deliver less than 100 FPS (which is my refresh rate) OR sit at superior boost (like 2 GHz+), but barely draw ~300 W.

If you are sure you are overloading the card (during benchmarks or otherwise), then check if one of the power connectors is delivering less wattage than the others and/or reattach them.

* I have increased the power limit from 420 to 450W in MSI Afterburner

Did an 8k-optimized run. You cleary can see (HWMonitor pic) that also there the GPU caps out @ ~360 watts. The 3 8pin power lines are distributing power more or less equaly. vBIOS is the same as yours. Just didn't add the screenshot. On the last pic you can see the sad bench result....
Another thing that I noticed is, that only the first 2 CPU-Cores hit 5100 MHz.....so perhaps the Mobo is faulty.....? Think I have to disassemble it again....

That's just the 8-pins, also add the PCIe slot draw, which is close to 40W in my screenshot. Not entirely sure where the card gains additional 9.1 W power (comparing to Board Power Draw), but it is close enough (most likely individual sensors not fully in sync with the part that calculates total GPU board draw by some other method). The card is using the default air cooler and isn't undervolted, so boost clock is likely jumping back and forth rapidly and messing up the summation.

In the GPU-Z's "Board Power Draw" field I can see ~426 W as the max value, which is in line with the 420 W default power limit of 3090 Suprim X. The Power Consumption (%) also shows a little above 100% TDP. Why the CPUID HwMonitor doesn't see this value (and I see that version 1.43 explicitly mentions RTX 3090 support), I cannot say.

Also, the MSI AfterBurner shows the "Board Power Draw" in the RTSS overlay as GPU power usage if you enable the "Power" metric monitoring.
