New K8T Neo won't boot. D-Bracket LEDs show nothing.

I just bought my first AMD based system, maybe I forgot to do something? I've read the manual but I don't feel that I've missed anything.

Anyway I've connected the ATX 12V & the ATX 20-Pin Power Connectors. I also connected that D-Bracket thingy, a GeForce2MX and one 512MB Ram in DDRslot 1. I have no harddrives or anything else connected, I just want to see if my system works.

When I try to boot the FANs go on but that's it.
The leds on the D-Bracket shows nothing.
I get nothing on my monitor.
I can only turn the computer off by disconnecting the power cable.
I've tried to unplug->plug it back together. No luck. :( I've also tried it with no RAM at all = no difference.

CPU: A64 3000+
MB: MSI K8T NEO-FSR
RAM: Corsair Value S. PC3200 DDR-DIMM 512MB - Unbuffered, Non-parity, 64Megx64, CL2.5
PSU: AntecTruePower380W +5V@35A +12V@18A +3.3V@28A

Is my PSU too weak or may something be broken? :undecided:

Thanks.

UPDATE: My MB was offically defective

Hi

The PSU should boot your board, just. As you have no drives etc connected, there should be enough, sometimes PSUs do not produce what they are meant to.

First check that no loose screws are lying around the board, and that all leads and connectors are not touching board or case.

Then check to see that MOBO is not shorted by a fixing screw, or touching a post outside the edge of screw holes.

That JBAT1 jumper is on pins 1 & 2

That front panel connectors are on right pins, especially Power SW, reset, al as 2-19 of manual. Maybe change pins on Pwr SW

Sounds like a short or front panel connector.

good luck

Thank you for your reply. :-))

I've tried to boot while lifting my board a little so it doesn't touch anything. It's still all the same. :( It might have touched something it should'nt the first time i tried to boot it though.

I've checked JBAT1, powerSW and resetSW a couple of times just to be sure I've placed it correctly and it should be fine.

I did notice something the last time i tried to boot. The powerLED flashes every two seconds. In the manual it says:
"If the Power LED on the front panel flashes every two seconds, this signal tells you that one of the power connection har been protected"

What does that mean??

I will. But shouldn't my D-Bracket show me that something was wrong? It's all dead now. And I thought I would beep, telling me my RAM is faulty.

If you have other Ram try it, you need to remove power lead from case, and take the JBAT1 off and put it on pins 2 & 3 for 5 secs, also remove Ram. Replace jumper on Jbat1 pins 1 & 2, replace RAM, plug power cable back in and restart.

Flashing led is a pain, you can see on thread about ' won't post......' what sort of probs it can give. It is a sort of hibernation I think, protection.

Cheers

I tried with CMOS flash.
Removed power cable. Placed jumper on 2&3 waited 5-10sec. Placed jumper on 1&2. Inserted power cable. Did I do it right?
Tried to boot and got that flashing every two seconds again. :fear:

I don't have another RAM stick so I couldn't try that. I hope it's the RAM and not the board, since that would be less of a hassle for me.

Very likely tha Ram, try leaving with power cable unplugged for 15 mins, let components discharge. may come back on without flashing.

I'll try that thanks.

Also I've read about bent pins on the CPU. Can the pins actually be bent, and be a problem, even if the CPU fitted the socket like it should? And would that give me 2sec LED flashes or a D-Bracket telling me the CPU's damaged?

Yes, that was next on list, it is easy to bend pins, harder (for me anyway) to see which ones.

CPU should just drop in, any pressure can bend a couple of pins.

If rest don't work take out CPU and check pins, also check the plate for holding Heat Sink is not touching any ' live ' parts or tracks. Or any of the fixing screws.

When a pin is bent do you mean all the way? No pin is bent so much that it didn't go into the little hole that it's supposed to. It's kind of hard to see but it looks like maybe two pins aren't completely straight. Does this matter? I had no problem fitting it in the socket.

Thanks for all your help btw.

Hi

Depends how much is bent, as long as they enter and connect they will be OK, but can you use a thin tube to completely straighten, a biro type pen or thin straw are good. Careful not to bend pins alongside. Is the CPU down flush, when inserted, no space under, fitting solid. You can hear/feel it 'clunk' into place.

Also, what can you do if a CPU pin is bent? Can you just bend it back or is your CPU damaged forever?

I'll try another stick of RAM as soon as I get hold of one. I'll tell you all how it goes. ;)

What is the minimum amount of hardware one would have to plug in for a system like this to post? Is RAM and CPU enough? I really want to see my power led to stop flashing.

Yes my CPU fitted perfectly. I didn't have to pressure it at all for it to go in. So I'm guessing it's eighter my RAM or my MB. Can't think of anything else.

Strange as I had the flashing led, but I didnt see anything in the manual about it

Anyhow mine was fixed by changing the PSU.

CPU pins are quite resilient, there is a company near here that takes in all the chip failure from big producers, then checks the pins, about 60% are bent pins, which they straighten with straws, re package them and sell.

Try and get a RAM stick, and try that before doing much more.

The board should come to life with CPU, fans, graphic card and ram, better with Keyboard as well, leave mouse out if you like. A floppy is a good idea, but you can do that after board posts.

In the manual here 2-20 is about IDE connections, don't see a ref to flashing lights anywhere.

Page ii says ' Manual Rev 1.0 / Release date August 2003.'

ODD!

Are there no lights at all, on the D bracket? It is connected OK, and the fans run. Yes

jocko

My manual says Release Date: September 2003.

I have IDE info @ 2-21 in my manual. Power LED flashing info in "Front Panel Connectors: JFP1 & JFP2" section.

What the grey power-led-flash-box says:
"MSI Reminds You...
If the Power LED on the front panel flashes every two seconds, this signal tells you that one of the power connection has been protected; if the Power LED flashes every one second, it tells you the CPU has been protected due to overheating. To refresh the system, please disconnect the power cable from the computer, and then reconnect the power cable to the computer again in at least five seconds."

D-Bracked shows no lights at all. There's two ways to connect the D-Bracked and I tried them both. My fans works perfectly everytime I boot. Too bad they are the only things that work though :undecided:
