New msi card small fire

I was putting my new PC together lastnight and had a small issue.  Installed the MSI 980 card.  Started hooking up harness that I now believe was for power supply.  I plugged it in a 12V socket on the motherboard instead.  A small fire developed on transistor 41.

Does anyone have a good installation guide?

I mean,  where is the correct place to plug the harness?  And is it one harness off the card or two?  I see two plugs off the card but I only have one harness.

You are not making any sense with that description. What harness from what? The only external electrical connection to the VGA card is from the PSU.

See the posting guide as instructed and list the components of your PC, see my signature below for example of what to list. Be as accurate as you can regarding brand/part/model names and numbers for everything.

Transistor 41 on what? MB or VGA card?

Hmm....reading this a few times I'm wondering if.....just maybe....that for whatever unknown reason the normal 24 pin power supply connector actually fit into the area on a GTX980 where you connect the 8 pin and 6 pin harness? Would that possibly make any sense? I mean, it would certainly sort of explain why the fire happened (probably shorted a couple of pins the wrong way....).

Posting a more clear and concise explanation of what you did (ie I connected the 24 pin connector to the 8 pin and 6 pin connectors on the video card) would really go a long way for people here to help you. Or perhaps even taking pictures and posting those so that we can even more easily figure out what happened.

Did you by any chance attempt to plug in the CPU 8 pin power?
