I'm trying to upgrade from a ryzen 5 5600x to a ryzen 7 5800x and I'm not sure if I need to upgrade my bios or not. it's not something I want to do I just want to know if I have to. if anyone could help me I would really appreciate it :)

Strictly speaking it shouldn't be required, but it cannot hurt to update to the latest BIOS before installing the new CPU, personally i'd take the opportunity.

the whole process just makes me nervous. I updated my bios last august and am trying to get a ryzen 7 so I'm unsure if its absolutely necessary

Many builders think that updating to the latest bios will solve their problems. In most cases it does not. You say you are trying to change cpu's. Are you having problems? You don't list the mainboard. That would help.

Understandably so. From myself and other similarly experienced people, i have done BIOS updates hundreds of times by now and only had a big problem one time, when i flashed the BIOS for the wrong board by mistake (one letter difference), back when that was still possible. And even that i could solve later. So, unless you use for example a PSU that's complete garbage and causes something to get messed up during flashing, then this is a very safe process.

It's not even so much about that, it's also about fixing the Logofail vulnerability and such. For me, if i swapped to a better CPU model and was on an older BIOS, what better opportunity is there to get the BIOS up to date as well? In truth, i rarely ever install a new CPU, since on Intel, they switch to a new socket every two years anyway, requiring new boards. But yeah, i tend to keep my BIOS up to date regardless. Usually with a bit of delay where i monitor the forums for any problem reports.
