No Display After BIOS Update

I noticed that there was a Windows 11 bios available for my Z490i Unify but after updating, I have no display and I have a white CPU LED lit up on the board. I've tried disconnecting power and resetting CMOS but no luck. Any ideas?

Clear CMOS by shorting JBAT jumper to check.

Read carefully, he said he already did that 😉

I'm afraid this might be another case of https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?...y-brick-your-board.363009/page-3#post-2073564

Sadly, the Z490i Unify has no way of recovering from a failed BIOS update, as it's missing the Flash BIOS Button functionality (BIOS Flashback). On Z490 this feature was rare, on Z590 almost all boards got it. But for your board, there is no real solution when this happens, other than to send it in and have MSI fix it for you (often done via the shop you bought it at, depending on the country), or maybe the shop will outright give you a new board. There is ample proof online that this can happen with Z490 boards, it happened to a couple dozen people here on the forum already, and it's clearly MSI's fault, something can go wrong on the last two or three BIOS versions when people update to them.

Well add another wish I had read these forums before updating. I hope you find an answer as I just did the exact same thing on a MSI Z490a pro motherboard with an i7 10700kf. Can't find a way to revert back to previous bios update either. :( Cleared everything and still white CPU debug lit staying on.

Yeah, Clear CMOS won't help here, it only wipes your custom BIOS settings. But if the BIOS itself is corrupt and can't POST, it requires some sort of BIOS flashback function. MSI have already recognized that this can save them a lot of trouble with RMAs when they add this function, since most Z590 boards have it now. But on most Z490 this is a huge problem. What's the most puzzling is that nobody at MSI is recognizing any issues with the Z490 boards and these latest updates. They just keep releasing new updates, and three updates in a row seem to have this "BIOS bricking danger" now. Granted, they don't read these forums. Granted, we might only see the few dozen people that had a failed update on Z490, vs. hundreds or thousands of successful updates that nobody posts about. But still, there's a clear issue here, i can immediately recognize new cases when someone posts about it, and it's always with Z490 boards.

Yeah I only updated because of the Windows 11 update. I am seeing a lot of this issue. I also used M Flash on a USB thumb drive through bios and not through MSI Center as well.

Ya seems like it's related. Unfortunately for me it also looks like it killed my CPU.

I'm in a time crunch right now and needed to get my PC fixed ASAP so I went to Microcenter and grabbed a 11900k and Z590i Unify to replace my 10900k and Z490i Unify. The first thing I tried was the Z590i board with my 10900k and still got the white CPU light when trying to boot, while the 11900k worked fine.

I tried calling MSI tech support to explain the issue but the rep I talked to was kind of a dick and just told me that a BIOS update couldn't do that and that this is why they tell people to not update the BIOS on their boards as it could brick them.

I wouldn't be so quick to conclude this. That would be out of the norm. Does the Z590I Unify have the newest BIOS installed, for instance?

Utter nonsense from them. I have personally done well over a hundred BIOS updates, and it only resulted in problems a single time. That was on an old ASUS board which didn't check if the board model matches, and i used the BIOS for the wrong board model which had another letter at the end. I fixed that by swapping the socketed BIOS chip for a new one.

With modern boards, BIOS update problems are very rare. I mean, yeah, if the power goes out during the update, you have a problem. But if you have a USB Flashback function, it's practically risk-free.

It was a couple versions behind.

Same here, this was the first time I've run into an issue from a BIOS update.

hello i have the same problem today with updating bios to ZC75vA9. My motherboard is a Z490 GAMING PLUS. The screen is black and I have the processor warning.
