Noob question about MSI X58 Pro-E motherboard - OC'd req'd for 1333Hz RAM?

Hi All,

I am considering building a rig using the MSI X58 Pro-E board. Both tigerdirectdirect and newegg specs indicate that OCing is not required to get RAM speeds at 1333Hz, however; the MSI site indicates OCing is required to 1333 and 1600Hz speeds. I am hoping someone here can clarify the issue for me.

At least the "normal" 9x0 processors have a maximum supported speed of 1066 for RAM. However, if you chose the appropriate RAM, at least with the 975 and newer BIOS versions for Eclipse SLI the board automatically uses 1333 mode (it did for me). At 1333 I also do not need to increase any voltage settings, while using 1600 mode typically requires to also increase RAM voltage. The board itself allows to use these RAM settings without the requirement to speed up any of the other parts of the board, however 1600 could be considered to overclock the memory controller. 1333 mode might be more interesting anyway as it's allowing much faster RAM timings.
