A new BETA has just surfaced in the German MSI Forum: A7235IMS.151 (09/21/07).

For anyone interested, here is a Link to the BIOS (use at your own risk!):

http://msi-forum.de/thread.php?threadid=31968&threadview=1&hilight=&hilightuser=0&page=3#post281405

Changelog will follow shortly.  The admin did not find the time yet.

The changelog did not follow that shortly after all, but it goes like this:

Fix some DDR can not boot issue

:biggthumbsup:

There seems to be a new beta (1.5b2) around. Unfortunately I don't have a link to it, but here is the changelog:

Fix Smart FAN Fail from S3 wake up issue

Here it the Link to BIOS 1.52 BETA.  The BIOS was just uploaded.  Use it at your own risk!!

Be careful with this beta bios (1.5b2), It was necessary to use the BIOS recovery procedure to make it post again (didn't post at all? :nono: bad checksum?). I'm back now with 1.5b1.

Have you checked the last 4 of your manual RAM settings? Jack and followgr are right in saying that above a certain OC speed the double boot is necessary for stabilising settings. Use Everest Ultimate or a similar utility to read your full SPD.

As an example my RAM settings should be 5,5,5,18,42,6,3,3,3 for CAS 5 1066. The RAM will do CAS 5 1200 but even if I use a divider to leave the RAM at 1066 the MSI BIOS overides the settings to 5,5,5,18,42,13,8,5,3. I presume that this is for stability due to the higher read value of the O/C'd CPU working the memory bandwidth harder.

If I input these MSI preferred settings manually I get back to single stage BOOT along with the other steps outlined in my other post which are similar to fraggle's (although I had to alter Vnb & Vtt for stability also).

Also even if you have a CPU with a standard 266 QDR FSB if you overclock past 333 then use the links to force the CPU onto the higher strap as it can greatly affect the CPUs read performance. There are quite a few numptys out there running 400+ FSBs on reduced dividers who don't realise that their CPUs read performance is up to 50% down compared to if they were running it on the higher strap.

Hi jack

I checked out the links for the 1.51 Beta BIOS which comes as a RAR file. Does it have to be converted to ZIP for the MSI USB BOOT utility and if so do you have a link for a ZIP version as I didn't want to risk introducing any errors converting it.

My P35 Platinum has been perfectly stable but last night has started doing the refusing to BOOT thing. I couldn't get anything out of it until I put a single stick of RAM into the third slot and as yet haven't had time to test whether slots 1 or 3 has failed already. If they haven't and the board is stable for a couple of days again then I will try flashing to a BIOS version after the "fixed will not BOOT with certain RAM" issue to see if this cures the problem.

Has anyone else noticed massively increased HD fragmentation after OCing? Haven't been able to check yet but wondered if the SB voltages were undervolting like the Vcore, Vnb & Vtt causing paging problems.

Yes I entered manually those values. For my memos I use 35-3-4-3-3  and then it changes to 35-8-11-3-6. Doing this still gives me double-boot. If you enter manually the "adjusted" values (the second ones) the board re-adjust them again and, of course it double-boots.
And yes, I use the 333 strap. And I do notice the bandwith gain. Sandra memory bandwith test gives me 8000MB/s at FSB 1800/DDR900.

Thx jack flashing was a much less "fingers crossed" task using the USB method. It sorted my problems out and now works with my Black Dragons again. I no longer have the undervolting problem, memory bandwidth is up 750MHz on synthetic benchmarking using all stock settings and the (poor) ICH9R raid performance has improved a bit.

Lychgate have you tried a different brand of memory or disabling the on-board sound? I did have 1 board about a month back that would only 2 stage BOOT with OCZ2P800R22GK RAM installed as the guy preferred them to Geils, this was also the only guy that didn't buy an X-Fi sound card. The only explanations I could think of at the time was that the board had trouble single stage booting with higher density & (internal overall stick not CAS) latency RAM or that board set-up needed more juice than other builds and with MSI only using a 4 phase PWM it maybe needs 'notice' to pump enough watts out above a certain load.

Glad you seem to know what you're doing with OCing sometimes it's like trying to wade through treacle explaining things to maximum Core speed is everything types. Have you done any CPU or task benchmarking to check it's (esp. CPU read) performance at different setting combinations? Stangely my set-up doesn't provide best real world performance at the biggest numbers-best memory synthetic scores clock settings, I don't run it that high for normal use anyway due to temperatures and wanting some longevity.

I'm worried that my board suddenly played up and went unstable as some of the ones I've sold in builds have gone some distance inc. to Eire. Previously they either played up or behaved straight out the box, it's going to be a real pain and expense if I have to sort them out in the near future. If mine plays up again I think I will just RMA it to get those items updated even if a newer BIOS claims to sort it out.

I don't think the soft BOOT is a real problem as it shouldn't spin the Hard Drives up and crash stop them before re-starting. I had a 2 stage BOOT with an OC'd ABIT IC7MAX3 in a previous build once I upgraded the memory to PC4000 Golden Dragons which involved using a modded BIOS so these boards aren't the only ones that do it.

Well, I'm gettting used to this double-boot problem... It's annoying but bearable

Yes you're right. The higher bandwidth make very little difference in most of the usual tests (such as 3dmarks and superpi). Check this article:
http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/mainboards/display/msi-p35-platinum_10.html

And I think I'm not pushing my rig sooo hard. I mean, 450x7 for an E6400 and DDR900 for DDR800 modules isn't excessive. I just call it... "tuned up" :lol_anim:

Thanks, interesting article and the Platinum seems to come out well for performance although the writer seems as bad as me at explaining why lol.

Im still having booting problems, I get all 4 red LED's light whenever I start (Processor problem).
I have tried all of the suggestions for sorting the processor listed on this forum but think it might be linked to everyone elses problem with the P35 Memory issues.
I have ordered some 667mhz RAM in hope of reaching the POST screen.

If I ever get there, what version should I try to flash the bios to?
Most people say 1.1 is the most stable, but newer versions such as 1.4, 1.43, 1.51 or 1.5b2 are better?

Any help would be great.

The 1.4 BIOS version seems very stable to me. I'll suggest using this one because is the last official release. The 1.51b (wich i'm currently using) is as stable as the 1.4, but is still BETA. Stay away from the 1.5b2, it almost kills my board (maybe it has a bad checksum).
Anyway your quad core (Kentsfield Q6600, right?) it's supported by all the BIOS versions. Make sure you're using the 266 strap (look ak your manual if not sure of it).

I just finished building my system with the mobo being P35 Platinum Combo, will the 1.4 bios mentioned here work for me, as on the homepage for my mobo this bios isn't listed un the downloads area?

Use only the bios versions that MSI has listed for your motherboard.  Using the wrong one can kill your motherboard.

@belveder:

Just a side note to your question and Grayone's advice:

A good way to get an idea about which BIOS file is a candidate for you board, always have a look at the following information before you even think about a BIOS flash:

- mainboard model name & PCB Version
- BIOS File name

---->P35 Platinum // P35 Neo2 FR/FIR // P35 Neo2

- mainboard model name & PCB Version: MS-7345 v1.x
- BIOS File name: A7345IMS.1xx

----> P35 Platinum Combo

- mainboard model name & PCB Version: MS-7338 v1.x
- BIOS File name: A7338IMS.1xx

----------------------

As you can see, the three P35 mainboards I mentioned first, have the same model name & PCB Version.  The P35 Combo has a different mainboard layout. That it why it requires different BIOS files.

New Beta Bios is out. Version 1.62

You can find it in the German MSI Forum.
