Hello,

I have a quick question about the P55-GD80's capability to control the CPU fan speed based on the temperature and I'd be grateful if anyone could answer it. I have tried searching the forum but can't find something relevant.

I currently have a PWM (4 pin) fan attached but would like to change it for another, mainly because I believe it will provide better cooling and be quieter. Unfortunately, it will be a 3 pin, non-PWM type.

Will the motherboard still be able to control the speed by varying the voltage supplied to the fan?

The manual states that both pin types are usable with CPUFAN1 but is unclear if the speed control is available for both, unless I'm reading it wrongly.

Thank you.

Edit: Typo corrected.

No, not on the CPU-Fan Header.  The automatic BIOS regulation works via a PWM Signal which is transmitted via the 4th pin.  In order to regulate a 3-Pin Fan, the voltage must be adjusted.  A PWM always gets 12V supply voltage that is why a 3-Pin Fan would always work at full speed when connected to the CPU-Fan-Header.

Check the H/W Monitor Section in BIOS Setup to see which of the System-FAN-Headers (SYSFan) can be adjusted there.  You could use that 3-Pin Fan on one of the adjustable SysFan-Headers.  You can't have those headers regulated by the BIOS.  However, you could use SpeedFan to regulate such a Fan on the Windows level (at least for those headers that are adjustable in BIOS Setup, too).
