Just lovely. Haven't used onboard audio in ages but figured after all these years motherboard makers would figure out how to isolate noise from the audio circuit. Well, again I'm proved wrong. The Realtek 889 onboard audio emits a somewhat faint beeping and scratchy/static sound thats easily noticeable if I leave the volume of my speakers turned up a bit and lower the software volume control. Its even way more noticeable on the front panel headphone jack.
I've already troubleshot this to death and know its the motherboard. Tried changing and disconnecting every device and removed everything connected to the system, but the noise remains. Even tried a different PSU.
No overclocking and have spread spectrum enabled. Tried to disable as well and also tried BIOS fail safe settings. Nope! MSI sent me beta BIOS V1.24 and tried that too. Nope!
Same nonsense I've experienced on other motherboards, except for Intel boards. Why is it that they don't spend a bit more time to decouple the audio circuit to protect it from noise/RFI?
Can someone else please check theirs and please let me know?. Do I exchange this with Newegg or will another board have the same issue?
I'm currently using a thermaltake v3 case. I've tested its front panel on my old P4 system, and it does not have any noise even if I used both the USB and audio port.

I recommend you open a support ticket. Let them know about your experience. I have and they claim they are looking into the issue. Hearing from other users may help to motivate engineering.
I had the same problem with my system - still occurred after updating the bios. Can't really blame the drivers in windows because the noise was happening prior to windows booting.
To making things even stranger the noise still occurred after trying 2 different PCI sound cards (old ones I had laying around).
I swapped in another power supply for other reasons (Old one was a 'x-power 585'; new one is a 600 watt thermaltake); now the noise is completely gone.

Your problem is different because it occurred before the OS/drivers loaded. In my case the line out and headphone out are quiet until the Windows drivers or Winki loads. Its definitely electrical noise, but I think its coming from the switching power supply on the motherboard.
I also tried two power supplies. Both Corsair, two different models. No change.
So what was the final resolution for this problem. I have the same issue so I'm wondering if the motherboard was actually bad or if there was/is some other underlying issue. I thought I would be able to live with the problem but now I'm thinking it's getting on my one remaining nerve . . .

Front panel jack noise was significantly reduced after I spoke with Antec and they confessed they had an issue with their FP port adapters on my case model. They sent a replacement and that reduced the noise by 90%. I now get an equal level of noise (fairly faint) from both the rear and front headphone jacks. I have the Dr MOS LED's off and that helps too. BTW, I get this same faint noise on both outputs when testing on a bench using different power supplies and video cards. And, my P55-GD85 was exchanged (for a third time) in June and the replacement does the same thing.
Try re-routing cables in your case. I still believe MSI has a decoupling issue in the audio circuit and that the onboard PSU (Dr. MOS) is bleeding a bit of noise into the audio circuit.
The reality is that most people won't detect it because they have inexpensive speakers and probably not a discerning ear. The noise is definitely there, but its on the preamp out so it won't affect recordings.
Otherwise I really like this motherboard. Has been rock solid!
i read through a lot of this. im not sure i can really help. but i will be using on board sound with my new msi p55a- gd65 build. its near same mobo as this 1. i hope i have no problems..
i do know over the few years ive been using building my computers. i read mics and head phones what ever plugged in front or back can have troubles and always has and over different brands etc..
my speakers logitech e5300 or using my mini shelf stereo im using on this system now- mini out of system to rca into stereo works fine- well i do not use my logitechs because they are thx speaker set up- tho they might still sound ok-im not sure- but i have read folks complain they not not sound as good if not on a thx sound system- but thing is- it with my audigy never just runs all the time in thx anyway. i have to set it to thx and it defaults back to normal when it feels like it- or always seemed that way to me. i have better than normal ears or hearing..
but point im coming to is. i never plug a mic into my sound front or back and both my logitech and stereo have its own head phone jack- i plug into that and good sound..
um another thing comes to mind and being you have tried different sound and or stand alone card and still have noise's. seems could be other things like. your speakers are to close to base unit or something not shielded. and too. lots of folks do not have his volumes set right. in main sound or players and can cause nosies etc. it is said best to set main sound and or players no more high than 70% keep that as default and up or lower volume from the speakers controls and not the system or players.. both my logitech and stereo have its on volume control knob etc.
also many folks have troubles if playing say mp3's and the buffer is to high. if i remember right jetaudio years a go had large threads on the issues. i think if lower the buffer to 1.2 fixed it and works over other players too.. some times buffers are default 1.5 and on up.. its to high most of the time.. or being you tried different sound and same probs- your speakers could be bad or a wire is shorting you could have jerked on a wire be mistake or something.. it really sounds like shielding to me.. something magnetic can be causing that. like the speakers to to close to the base unit or some other electrical device and its not shielded..
but again. i have always read nothing but probs using front or back jacks for mics etc.. i love realtek on board tho- i have never had troubles with it. and i read way less troubles than say via or what ever- i normally only buy mobos with say realtek lan and audio..
my Audigy2 zs pro plat was wonderful the first few months i had it and first few updates etc. after that the audigy4 or fx stuff started to come out. creative sabotaged my sound card imo and tried to ruin it. i guess thinking i/we would run out and buy its new stuff.. but when it updated again it changed a lot of stuff and did not delet out some of the old stuff or gui screens for say media or its player or eax controls- it left them along side the new- make a mistake and click on wrong 1 the system will lock up etc. its dam stupid if you ask me. but before it would delete out all the old stuff during updates etc..
maybe its just me.. but i learned i could not even install the dang thing unless i installed everything on the with unit disc- minus extra midi programs-- but all drivers and what ever was built in or on that disc had to be installed before i could go to creative site and then install its latest flash based upgrade program thingy.. it would auto search- then tell me what is needed or available etc.. but even then it could have multi downloads for same thing- so id figure i had to install the older first to install the most new. but it can be confusing. why they could not have 1 download for 1 certain thing with all past updates included is beyond my common sense thinking.. but being they did what they did to my sound card that i payed over 250 dollars for- i never use it much and will never buy any thing creative again.. most folks i know say 18 out of 20 and for different reasons say- they will never again buy anything creative..
being i read nothing but problems out of creative or what ever brand add on sound cards- drivers what ever. i see no point in wasted money for a add on sound card. i just use the on board these days and will live with the said lil performance hit. and many games that use eax stuff has nothing but problems unless you turn it off- so what is the point of having it??
um maybe another thing you can try.. stuff just glitches some times.. try going into your sound controls and windows controls and change some settings back and forth. maybe turn on/off eq if using it.. turn on/off any eax fx.. set back to your normal settings.. maybe power off your pc let it sit off for least 3 minutes then reboot.. believe it or not.. power off your system for a few minutes say 3 to 5 minutes. like resets stuff. and some times when you reboot you might get a update pop up from say flash player or something else.. just restarting all the time is not always best and seems some things do not pop up like the adobe flash update thingy.. it may sound odd. but imo letting the system stay off for a few minutes helps sometimes..
any way. sorry i can not help more. i hope you get it working like you want.. take care see ya..
