Hello,
I have bought the p67a-gd65 (b3) this week, but I have a strange issue with it (at least, it is strange to me).

PC specs:
P67A-GD65(b3) BIOS 1a, i5 2500k, win 7 64 bit
Corsair 2x2GB XMS3 TW3X4G1333C9 | TW3X4G1333C9A
Corsair TX750W
Asus HD6970

When I connect my naturalpoint TrackIR (a head tracking device I use for flightsims) to any usb port, it will work for several seconds, or minutes if I'm lucky, and then it freezes. When I unplug and then replug the device it works again for a couple of seconds/minutes and then it freezes again.
At first I tought it might be related to the software provided by naturalpoint, but I have tried with both versions available and both give the same result. I also checked on windows xp and windows 7 and again no difference, it freezes after several seconds.

I read some posts on the forum and found the latest BIOS, which I installed, but that also did not solve my problem.

Before I bought this board I never encountered any problems with the TrackIR and it also works perfectly on a different pc.

Does anyone have a clue what might be the problem?

Thanks,
Martin

Any discrepancies noted in Device Manager? All BIOS USB settings enabled? Possibly any drivers missed off the install disc?

Added: Do you have a front case USB port connected? Does the problem also occur there?

I would also suggest that you try connecting to different USB ports and see if they return the same problem.

Next, you can try to uninstall the USB root hub controller from Windows and let Windows install them itself. See if this method helps.

Thanks for your replies!

I have tried putting it in the front usb and the first time it froze, but the second time it looked better. I only had 5 minutes to test before work, so I cannot say if it is the solution, but it looked promising.

I installed all drivers from the disk twice, so I don't think it is related to that.

I have tried all usb ports on the back (incl the usb 3.0 ports), all give the same result.

Tonight I can try to deinstall the usb hub and let Windows reinstall it, maybe that makes a difference.

Thanks for the help, it is much appreciated. I really only use my pc for flightsims and without this I cannot play...

I came home early today so I did some more testing.

Connecting the TIR to the front usb ports really seems to be working. Not sure why, though? Is it because it is connected in a different way to the motherboard? The USB hub controller which it is using is of course the same, so I'm a bit at a loss.

I have also found some links regarding energy management (http://maximumpcguides.com/windows-7/disable-usb-selective-suspending-in-windows-7/ and http://support.microsoft.com/kb/895962, which I hoped would solve my problem, but unfortunately it still freezes when using the usb ports on the back of my pc.

Anyways, the TIR works again for me so I'm happy.
Although I hope that one day I can connect it to the back of my pc, which is more convenient.

Many thanks!

Update (again): I was too early celebrating  :( The same problem still happens, now even with the front usb ports. I will go back and try to find other solutions

Have you tried uninstalling the USB root hub and let windows reinstall the drivers itself yet?

Do you have another system the device can be tested on? Possible the device itself is developing a problem? Any noted problems with any other USB devices? Does the Device Manager look exactly like this;

Once more, thanks for all your help!

Sorry, forgot to mention it, but yes, I did that.

I have tested the TIR on my laptop and everything worked fine, so it does not seem to be the device.
The only difference in my Device manager is that I have two USB Composite Devices, otherwise it is exactly the same.

MSI support in the Netherlands gave me some new ME firmware (no clue what it is exactly), but that did not work either.
They also suggested to buy a PCI-E USB card, since that might do the trick.

Well, that should work alright, but I hope they do look into a possible compatibility fix if it turns out to be a wider spread problem with other similar devices.

Well, I bought the card as suggested by MSI Support and now my TrackIR is working

It's a bit strange that it doesn't work on the USB ports of the motherboard and that I had to buy an additional card, but at least I can use it again.

Thanks for all your help and replies!

I don't know what happened, but the problem is back.... even when using the PCI-e card  :undecided:

As I thought it my be related to the TrackIR, I tested it on another pc for a long period of time and there I did not encounter the problem at all.

Im back to square one it seems and at a loss again.

How about other USB devices? Do they have the same issue as your Track IR?

I'm starting to suspect that the TrackIR is giving you the problems.

Hi NovJoe,

It is only the trackIR that is giving me the problems.

This is also the only device that uses a lot of current compared to the other devices (250-280mA, which seems to be much more than the rest).

I have tested extensively on my laptop and everything is fine over there. Furthermore I have been using the device for over two years on my ASUS P5K EPU motherboard without any problems either.

At the moment I'm testing some older TrackIR software to see if that helps :)

Thanks again for your help!

I'm not sure what the standard is for power at the USB, but if a tester is available, it seems the power needs to be checked. If it is something that can be increased by a BIOS revision to raise the power regulation? If it is below standard specification, a ticket in to MSI Tech Support would be very important.

This 7 ports USB 2.0 hub makes it possible to provide your PC, notebook or netbook with 7 extra USB 2.0 ports. You will find it very comfortable to have 7 USB 2.0 ports available using only one free USB port on your computer! The power supply per port is individually predetermined by the amount of power that the connected device needs.
I'm sure that is what Henry is recommending. Still doesn't answer the mystery of the add-in card working & then not, but a self powered USB hub should be a permanent solution.

Can it be related to the chipset drivers? I have updated them and the problem seems to be getting worse somehow.
I wouldn't think so, but I could be wrong. I would say it has more to do with power regulation to the USB ports, & not exactly sure what the exact controller or chip or item it is that does it. USB works off the PCH, but again, what exactly controls the power at the port. :undecided:

Probably still a good idea to get a ticket in with MSI Tech Support & see if they can duplicate any problem, or check the power at the ports on their test boards.
