Ok, so this is the reply I got from the MSI support guys:

Not much help, but at least it's some sort of confirmation that there will be a BIOS released at some point that will enable support for the Wolfdales on our motherboards.

One thing I find strange though is that they say the A7350nms.253 beta supports the Wolfdale chips, but that's the one Jack posted earlier and nobody had any luck with it...

Edit. Just noticed that it looks like only stereo55 tried out the A7350nms.253 beta but with a Xeon chip which might explain why it didn't work for him. The other guys all seem to have the P6N SLi Platinum boards and were having trouble with the A7350nms.163 BIOS.

Update 2. Just got a link to the beta bios from the tech support guys, so I'll be trying it out as soon as I get home from work today.

Yeh , I'd really like to see MSI get a "working" Wolfdale bios VERY soon .

Even though I have a e3110 Xeon (aka: e8400) , I do know that these chips will work on 650i/680i mobos with a "working" updated  Wolfdale bios . Even the "Intel ID string" for the e3110 are the same as a e8400 , with plenty of other reports/people running these chips in a varity of newer and older chipsets .  I have tried my e3110 in two other competitor brand boards thus far (650i/680i) , with updated Woldale bios's with out a problem . My e3110 is currently running in my brothers Evga 680i board for testing @ a nice 4250 speed with 1.368v , and running rock solid in Orthos, 3DMark06 and heavy gaming .

Personally I would prefer NOT to have to change mobos at this point to run a Wolfdale chip , so anyone getting/reporting another beta bios to work for a SLI-FI ; please post your findings . TIA

Hi,

I flashed my bios back from 1.63 beta to the "official"1.6 and im glad to announce that my E8500 now works with this bios!

Positive result!

Question ...

Since there is a new "official" SLI-FI bios 2.5 that came out , is it for Woldales ? There seems to be no info on this minus it saying updated cpu id  . The "notes" is the bios update are in Chineese , so thats of no help .

Yes

"The "notes" is the bios update are in Chineese , so thats of no help"

Nope they are not, its the same info as English but repeated in Chinese.

Well... no love for me.

Flashed the BIOS, opened up the case and put the E8400 in, cleared BIOS. Still the same result now - turning on gives me ALL LEDs on the keyboard on, all fans on, and no DLEDs on. *sigh*   (And yeah, I tested the CPU in a friend's MB, and it worked fine, so I know the chip ain't bad..)

Should works, Make sure that CPU is mounted properly. Repeat Clear CMOS(Remove power cord from the PSU 1st, else procedure has no effect) and leave one memory stick only in 1st near to CPU socket.
Make sure that all power cables are connected and try to boot.

Dbl-checked CPU - CPU good.
Cleared CMOS again - check. (Actually, I just took the battery out and left it out for now.)
Took out one memory stick - check.
Checked power - check.

Still no go, for some odd reason. For kicks, I removed BOTH memory sticks, to see if I at least got a beep or DLEDs, but nothing as well.

Regarding the power connections - I also disconnected all drives in case it was a power issue, but that didn't change anything. But, it did raise a question: On the 8-pin CPU power connector, mine has a block over the additional 4 pins. I've only had a 4-pin connected in there. Does the Wolfdale require all 8 pins on that? (If that's been my problem all along.. .aarg.) :)

(Also, because I realized I forgot to put it in my sig, after I post this I'll be updating my sig with the system specs, apologies for that.)

Cheers,
Mike.

Could be, dunno about that.

You have removed power cord from the PSU before proceed right?

I'll try the full connector, just to check. Hopefully, that's it.
Yes, sorry, power cord was pulled as well. :)

UPDATE:
No luck on the power.  Also decided to try and re-flash, no change there. :/
I contacted MSI's support, see what they say..

@coyttl

Can you check your newest CPU in another machine to ensure that its in working state?

Can you try with other regular memory stick?
What is your old CPU which currently is working?

I went ahead and RMA'd the mainboard, we'll see how it runs when I get it back. However, the CPU that works is an Intel Celeron 420 1.6Ghz 800MHz FSB. Even with nothing plugged in - no add-on cards, no memory, no drives - the mainboard gives the same result. On the Celeron, however, with nothing on it, I get a DLed code for no video. My board was one of the first 1000 made, according to MSI, based off the serial number, so I wouldn't be surprised if there was something else going on there. ;D

I will say, again, thanks to everyone here that helped. Was able to narrow it down at least. :)

I have the same exact problem. Tested the CPU in another board, works fine. I even took all the components out of the board, still no go. :angryfire:
I contacted MSI and I was told that I don't have an e8400... I gave them the exact link to newegg (I bought it as soon as I got the BIOS update):
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115037
I posted a reply with the newegg link on March 26, haven't heard anything back.

MSI official website still says that e8400 is compatible with P6N SLi FI v2.5 BIOS, yet I haven't seen 1 person get it to work.  :bonk:
http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=prodcpusupport&prod_no=1141&maincat_no=1

If anyone can help me out that would be great. Maybe we need another BIOS update, but really who wants to wait 3 months for the next release.
At the moment I don't know if I should sell the CPU or the board.

Ditto here ... no go with bios 2.5 on either a e8400 or e3110 (with SLI-FI) . Swapped in both my e6420 and q6600 in between installs just to make sure 2.5 was even working at all ,  and they were ok ; but not with the Wolfdale or Xeon .

People over at the [H] forums and OCF (overclockers.com) , all have reported the same , that 2.5 does not work for 45nm chips . Ive spent waaaay too much time (and resources) on this so-called  simple Wolfdale upgrade at this point , that  Iam a pretty disappointed .

Well this was really sad found for me. I've waited ages to get manufacturer conformation about E8400 compatibility with my P6N SLI. Then it came and I was so relieved when I didn't have to buy Q6600. Chip on it's place and WT , black screen. Few forum studies and there it is, it's not working despite manufacturer says so. I really want some compensation from this! I mean this is [bad language removed by moderator] , I spent a lot of money because of false information.  :angryfire: :angryfire:
