Hi guys, I'm r1ch from my website www.digitalreport.net and the UK benchmarking team Benchtec.

I had an issue with incorrect CAS setting on the 04282008 bios that came with the board where CAS set would be +4 on what was set in BIOS.

e.g CAS6 in BIOS = CAS10 in CPU-Z.

This beta fixes this. Thanks.

You're welcome?

Windows corruption when I hit 1000Mhz (DDR3-2000) though? :undecided:

What's the difference between the v1.1 beta and the vP03 BIOS?

Hrmmm ill give it a go as I haven't yet managed to get past 1600mhz with stability on my ddr3 2000mhz memory.

Thanks for the first beta bios I haven't had a data corruption issue yet :)

Does this bios address any IRQ issues or the under voltaging of the PCIE slots during spooling up when using 3 heavy drain video cards?

The IRQ issue being that when shared with the IRQ of a video card in SLI it drops SLI performance and makes a horrible dying cat sound out of the speakers :)

The post I'm running showing my progress in making this motherboard successful for me where you originally helped me.

My future board will definitely be ATI based lol ( nothing to do with MSI, but Nvidia's fault )

P.S  you guys do great in helping people in here considering you aren't actually MSI I believe.

hehehe

performance bios yielded no performance gains for me.

Memory still running at 1800mhz in duel channel.  But will run at 2000mhz in single?  wierd huh but same as always with this mobo.

same cpu overclock.

No data corruption yet.  Yet to try the sound card out again and yet to try the PCIE voltages out.

After extensive testing, I obtained a more stable overclock with the cpu using the performance bios.

No memory gains to be had.  I am happy though with my 4ghz quad core which definitely does help with the sli setup.  Still no data corruption :)  not to shabby

So I'm getting on ok with this BIOS, very good DDR3 overclocking but I have one major gripe.

Voltages.

For such a premium motherboard MSI need to allow for more than +0.3875v on CPU Vcore - that's as little as 1.4v (1.35v under load/vdroop) on a cherry 45nm chip.  :shocking:

It'd be great to get a straight answer from nvidia whether it's their fault the 790i corrupts windows, or the manufacutrer's BIOS.

Other manufacturers have BIOSs that fix the problem, whatever it is, but i'd like to know who's the original fault is.

Still, I'm sad MSI *still* haven't fixed this. For someone like me who reviews motherboards it makes for an incredibly frustrating time.

I agree r1ch - I even bought a new (slower) CPU, a more stately but more widely supported Q6600, to try and resolve the problem. The 1.1 BIOS update sadly hasn't help me in the slightest.

With no cards installed other than a single graphics card (one of two 9600's I've been using in SLI on another system for over 6 months with no issues) I still get corruption issues that are so bad I still have to set the CPU, North Bridge and South Bridge voltages manually (and I'm not over clocking) just for Windows to have more than a 1 in 3 chance of installing - this is after using 3 different SATA drives (from 3 different vendors). Right now, I can't even install games on it, let alone play them.

While all vendors have been in the same boat with their 790i boards MSI have handled this the worst it seems, in that they seemed to be the last to respond with a patch (1.1) and it doesn't seem to fix the issue (although some people do seem to be having better luck that others).

I think for only the second time in my life I'm going to have to junk a new board because of apparent design problems - unless there are just a large number of defective units (which their could be) it seems hard to imagine it was tested at all before release. Corruption so bad I can't install Windows reliably without manually set voltages on the NB/SB on a "supported" CPU like the Q6600 is crazy.

I'm not sure if it's safe to get something like the Striker II or if I would be better just steering clear of 790i boards all together (I want performance, but I'm happy not over clocking - it needs to be able to do straightforward things, like work correctly out of the box at stock speeds).

Sorry for bumping an old thread, but as a relative new P7N2 owner, this post saved my sanity and possibly the windshield of a passing car  ;-))

This board was having all sort of issues with windows lockups, "slow" performance to what i had stuffed in it and when trying to go to abit faster memory, data corruption, more and more lockups

The MSI bios update to 1.1 didn`t solve anything so finally found this post and the P03 bios download after seeing it get mentioned several times.

My first real bios flash [felt like going back to the stone age when looking for a floppy drive] and the system runs alot more stable now while slightly over clocked  :lol_anim:

I still have 2 gig of the OCZ memory, but as i finally just got it pretty stable running, i still need to see how it will run when adding them at a later stage when it really runs smooth and stable

P7N2 Diamond
Q9550 quad 2.831 mhz
2gig OCZ DDR3 [SLI Reaady Edition] [dual chan dimm 1 & 3]
XFX 280 GTX
Corsair 620 PSU
Zalman CNPS 9500AT cpu cooler
Antec Nine Hundred II  Case with 120mm side fan

Bios settings: P03 bios
FSB: 1600
DRAM: 800
Multiplyer: 7.5

PCI-E: 100 [default]
MCP: 100 [default]

CPU: +0.12500
DRAM: 1.70
SB: 1.550
NB: 1.25

Core 0 reached a max temp of 54c so far while the GPU purrs away at 60-68c befor the fan changes from default 40% to keep it at these temps

I must say i have no clue what i`m doing but from reading overclocking forums  :noidea:
Still a a rare system lock to solve but getting there :)

As i have no real performance software, i just used the freely PC Pitstop to see if my pc was of any good

Been searching for actual bios settings for this board for hours and didn`t find any, i hope some one will benefit from this post  :hat tip:

[edit]
System still had an occasional lockup but been running fine for hours so far after disabling the "automatic updates" service, if this is the culprit, it would explain why the lockups increased in the past as it was a new install to up2date with their latest bugs

*knock on wood*

Still no signs of corruption with the P03 bios and with hopefully lockups gone, i might even up the stakes with this board as i still have 2 spare ones lying around [don`t ask  :bonk:]

alterd the fan settings with RivaTuner and GPU stays between 39-56c :)

[Last edit for me]
2 days and the pc runs like a dream with the P03 bios, who ever made it,  :hat tip:

Lockups gone: culprit Windows automatic updates service
Stepped up the multiplier to 8.0 running at 3.2ghz
CPU temp stable at 44c idle to 52c under load
4gig ram plugged back in, no issues

If it wasn`t for these forums, i`d most likely been bald by now, thanks!

There seems to be a new beta Bios for this board on the FTP (1.23). I can not upload it but I am sure it would benefit all if a admin could do so.

Can anyone upload this BIOS? I'm having severe trouble with this board trying to get it to even post with a mild OC. Using P03 now.

I don't have the password to the FTP server, any more.  A moderator will have to upload it.
