Problem
PC freezes after wakeup from sleep mode. I would say 1 out of 4 times my PC freezes when being resumed from sleep mode. Nothing is reacting anymore and I have to restart my PC by pushing the power button. It seems more often triggered in certain combinations. For example some programs open (like RDP connection, Mail and Firefox). But this is a bit a feeling. It occurs also with no programs open. For reproduction it’s triggered by pressing the sleep mode button via the start menu. In normal occasions it happens after the configured 30 minutes for sleep mode in Energy Saving menu.

PC Specs:
Processor AMD Ryzen 5 5600X 6-Core Processor, 3.70 GHz
Video Card NVIDIA GIGABYTE RTX 3070
Memory DDR4 4x 8 GB (32GB)
Motherboard MSI MPG B550 Gaming Plus Hard disk
NVMe WD Blue SN550

Symptoms
1. After resuming, PC starts up. The lockscreen of windows 10 is being displayed, on my main screen. 1 Other screens, directly report no signal. (this is the one connected via HDMI). The ones connected with DisplayPort at least show the lockscreen.
2. The time which is displayed on the lockscreen freezes too. So to wakeup time is displayed, but not updated in the minutes which follows.
3. The Icon for internet remains, not connected either. System is not reachable via network neither with Teamviewer.
a. However after resuming from sleep, the PC does request an new Lease at the DHCP server and renews that one. (The DHCP lease is refreshed).
b. Ping is not working in the frozen situation. (normally it works).

Event Viewer Logs – Reproduction 1 Event viewer logs don’t really show anything, altough I can reconstruct the situation.
Logs in dutch.
Putting it into sleep mode:
18:13:17 -> Het systeem wordt in de slaapstand gezet. Reden: Application API

Resuming it (*system time on resume is always one second later, but corrected after system time is synchronized again)
18:13:18* -> Het systeem is hervat vanuit slaapstand. 18:57:56 ->De systeemtijd is gewijzigd van ‎2021‎-‎08‎-‎29T16:13:18.396317500Z in ‎2021‎-‎08‎-‎29T16:57:56.500000000Z. Reden van wijziging: System time synchronized with the hardware clock.
18:57:58 Het systeem is uit een toestand van laag energieverbruik gekomen, Oorzaak van ontwaken: Aan/uit-knop

The problem
18:57: Displayed time on lockscreen -> Freeze
Power-reset at 19:00 to get away from this not resonding situation: De vorige afsluiting van het systeem om 19:00:59 op ‎29-‎8-‎2021 is onverwacht gebeurd.

This last event from reproduction 1 occurred when the following all had been done already

1. Devmgtm (apparaatbeheer), put all input devices / devices to not do any energy saving: Uncheck-> PC can turn off this device to save energy.
2. Point 1 is done for :
• Corsair Composite Virtual input,
• USB Invoer apparaat
• usb hoofdhub
• GPIO Adapter
• generieke usb hub
• Realteak PCI GBE Family Controller
• AMD PSP 11.0 Device
3. Powercfg -h off
4. Turn off -> Harddisk to sleep -> never
5. Updated drivers (windows updates / Dragon Center / Nvidia Experience Center (latest driver))
6. Updated MSI bios to E7C56AMS.170
7. Turn off C-states | “Overclocking\Advanced CPU\AMD CBS \ Global C-states -> Disabled • Reverted back after this occasion from reproduction 1.
8. Sfc /scan now done -> Fine
9. mdsched.exe -> No issues
10. chkdsk C:/ -> No issues
11. Remove / re-attach all the display cables -> results in blackscreen. Then even the frozen lockscreen is not visible anymore. -> just blackscreen.

Event Viewer Logs – Reproduction 2
In occurrence 2 Global C-states was put back to “Auto”. The Wake up Settings, Wake up by USB devices was allowed too.
23:24:57 into sleep mode
23:28:03 resume (Freeze)
Keep PC for 10 minutes in the frozen state
23:38:54 Force power off
23:41:19 Turn PC on again

I already created a ticket at my videocard driver, there the community pointed me to the motherboard, with the point that DDR4 timings are not restored properly on resume from sleep.
Currently my DDR4 memory is configured by A-XMP OC MODE for 3600Mhz which is the speed of my DDR4 memory.
Can somebody guide me through a solution? I have not found a way to judge / proof this statement of DDR4 timings.

Hi Citay,
Thank you for your reply.
I updated my Bios to

Version: 7C56v17
Release Date 2021-06-28
File Size 17.14 MB

The topmost Bios is currently still a beta version. So would you recommend going to a beta version?

Yes. With weird issues like this, you first try everything from the BIOS update side.

Hi

I'm in the meanwhile upgraded to 7C56v181(Beta version). And unfortunenatly I ran into the freeze again.
Let the PC go into sleepmode after 30 minutes and when I waked it up, like +- 2-3 hours later, it was frozen again with the same patterns as described in my first post.

The only thing I changed after the upgrade was the selected A-XMP profile, which was made by the assembly party for my memory.
Memory: 2x https://azerty.nl/product/corsair/3976013/vengeance-rgb-pro-geheugen-ddr4
Latentie: CL18 (18-22-22-42)

Configurations:
moederbord.JPG
moederbord-oc-settings.JPG

Altough I'm not even sure it's the memory which is the problem.
Any further ideas?

I need to run with it disabled for a couple of days then, to trustfully judge if it's working.
So disabled it for now. Altough this will not make me utilize the best out of my memory, the DDR4 speed is reduced to 2133 MHZ.
Could it be that the configured 18-22-22-42 needs to be tweaked? The memory does have a speed for 3600 MHZ.

Just a thought, are you running the latest vbios for that 3070 type and revision?

Hi Citay,

I ran into it again :(
It seems, that when the pc is in sleep for a longer time it occured. So bringing it to sleep and waking it up directly seems to work.
But bringing it sleep and waking it a couple of hours later it's frozen with all the symptoms from my original post.

So A-XMP profile didn't make a difference. What can I try next?

@laurence1211 I did install the latest software drivers. Where can I find or check if I have the latest vbios?

Well there are 10 gigabyte 3070's, so you will need to check which model you have and which revision of that model you have. Go here: https://www.gigabyte.com/Graphics-Card/GeForce-RTX™-3070
Then click on the card you have making sure you get the right revision. Then click support and if you need a vbios they will be listed under bios. If you need an update there will be different versions of the vbios depending on what vbios is already on the card. You have to pick the right one. What 3070 do you have exactly out of interest?

Apperently I already have the latest version.
I can't run the installer, and as it's fully in the sign of enabling Resizable Bar. I could confirm I already have the Resizable BAR option enabled.

Hi Anderson

My name is Andre Da Costa; an Independent Consultant, Windows Insider MVP and Windows & Devices for IT MVP. I'm here to help you with your problem.

Modern Standby was first introduced with Windows 8 in 2012.

So, a modern PSU should not be required to use it.

Best way to find out if your system supports it without the new PSU is to run the following command.

Click Start, type: CMD
Right click CMD
Click Run as administrator

At the prompt, type the following command then hit Enter:

powercfg /availablesleepstates

This will list all the power states that are available and not supported.
Best regards,

Hi @Alan J T

available-sleepstates.JPG

Changes in bios.jpg
settings.JPG

tried as well some power/ voltage settings manually as adviced in https://forums.tomshardware.com/thr...he-computer-does-not-wake-from-sleep.2535968/
But nothing works. Still have the same problem.
Tried as well Power Supply Idle Control, all the options which are listed.

Is there a way to turn somehow more detailed logging on? In the eventviewer I can't find leads, but I would like to know more in detail why the pc is freezing.
As I can reproduce the problem quite easily.

Not that I know off I never use sleep mode as I do not like it or actually trust it to do as it is designed to do. Last time I used Sleep mode I lost about 6GB of of data.
