Board: X670E Tomahawk WIFI
BIOS: 7E12v1E
GPU: AsRock RX 7900 XT Phantom Gaming OC
CPU: Ryzen 7 7800X3D
Cooler: Noctua NH-D15
RAM: 2x16GB Corsair Vengeance 6000MHz
SSD: Samsung 2TB 990 PRO
PSU: Corsair 850W RM850x
SYS: Windows 11 Home x64 Ver. 10.0.22631

About 7/10 times the pc wakes up normally from sleep mode, during which red and yellow light on motherboard (CPU, RAM) flash. 3/10 times the lights light up for about 30 seconds, after which they turn off about the same time. After this only black screen, USB devices get power (leds on mouse light up, not on keyboard) but no other connection. Have waited for over 30 minutes, no change. Always gets fixed by forced shutoff via holding down the power button, after this boots up to saved state (previous applications open etc.) No problems on regular startup.

Worked normally for about a year, problem started a few months ago suddenly. Didn't disconnect or open up the PC / download any software / do anything else notable which could have caused system change. All temps during benchmarks normal and no problems during running. PC has never crashed etc.

List of things that have not fixed the problem:

Updated BIOS
Reset BIOS settings through BIOS menu, haven't cleared CMOS with jumping
Updated GPU drivers
Updated Windows from 10 to 11
Reset Windows power settings through troubleshooting
Turned off fast startup
Unplugged and reconnected PSU (also removed and reconnected GPU, didn't try to boot without it)
RAM are in slots A2 and B2 per the manual, as they have always been

Not a huge problem, but very annoying since I primarily keep PC in sleep mode. Also have to think that constant forced shutoff doesn't do the PC any favors. Any thoughts on possible fixes? Could clearing CMOS have any other effect than resetting through the BIOS menu does?

DRAM overclocking with EXPO and CPU undervolting with PBO is causing that for me on the same board, CPU and BIOS version.

With EXPO enabled, waking up was working most of the time, but sometimes it failed.
With EXPO and PBO enabled, waking up stopped working completely.

Without EXPO and PBO waking up was working fine but I didn't test this extensively.

Thank you for reporting this. I have exact same problem... for me too it was working fine on older BIOS versions but after some time (almost a year) it is now not working or very rarely works even on those same old BIOS I used... I am on Linux/Win7. I get exact same black screen. I thought it was my AMD GPU/Monitor problem, but saw that another B650 Tomahawk MSI user who has Nvidia and different monitor, also had this problem...

To all of you with wake-from-sleep issues:
  • Do you have EXPO and/or PBO enabled?
  • From the time, when wake-up was working for you: What BIOS version were you using and did you have EXPO/PBO enabled back then?

I've had XMP and PBO (Advanced, Motherboard, -20 all cores Curve Optimizer) enabled for past year that I bought this pc. still have them enabled. Wake from sleep worked most of the time (very rarely it would not work in the past on Win7, always worked on Linux. but now works in neither of them, occasionally works on Linux). This was in BIOS 7D75v174(Beta version). I am now again on this same BIOS version but Wake from sleep most of the time crashes the CPU (nothing works, have to hard shut down). This is on AMD GPU, but recently saw a Nvidia user with literally same problem.

Exact same problems here.

7800X3D CPU
4080TI GPU
32GBx2 G Skill Trident Z5 Neo RAM (EXPO Enabled)
MSI X670 WIFI Pro Mobo

Slow boot up, which is fine we know AM5 has an odd memory learning process. However when waking up a lot of the time the red and yellow mono lights go on and it won't wake anymore. Crazy problems to have in 2024, really hoping I don't have to just swap to a different motherboard.

check your chipset drivers, for AMD cpus you need up to date chipset drivers
most wake up issues are solved with 6.01.25.342 or newer
idk with linux, but every windows drivers (not only cpu/chipset ones) can potentially break the sleep/hybernation capabilities.

Updated chipset drivers and BIOS, no change.

Thanks for the responses, and sorry for my inactivity after the initial post.

I did some more empirical testing, and it does seem that turning off EXPO fixes this issue. Tried also manually setting DRAM speed to 6000MHz, after which I ran into the same issue. Chipset drivers are up to date, as they were when I made this post. Didn't bother testing other frequencies between 4600-6000MHz.

My guess would be that the X3D CPUs (or maybe just the 7800X3D?) specifically have some weird problem with memory when waking up from sleep/hibernation, since that seems to be a common denominator here. I'm guessing this will be fixed with a BIOS/driver update sometime in the future, but we'll see. Until then it seems that we have to choose between running lower DRAM freq or just dealing with the issue. Personally I'm not running anything particularly RAM heavy and lower frequency performs well enough, just kind of annoying to not get full performance from the components.

Wow... I can confirm too that Sleep problem is gone without XMP!! I just disabled XMP and no longer a black screen after sleep!! I tried 5-6 times, every time I managed to wake from sleep. Good job @hupimies2151a02d0 you have found the root cause!! I'm using old 7D75v174(Beta version) BIOS BTW.

However there is a bug on Linux. In Linux, there is no problem in the first sleep. But after 2nd sleep, mouse and keyboard do not work and in fact nothing else works either, yet screen is no longer black... I tested Win 7 as well and after 2nd sleep, I saw that mouse and keyboard were unresponsive but after 5 seconds they became responsive... I wonder if "Wake From USB" settings in BIOS has anything to do with this as I have it enabled... or the fact that I'm sleeping/waking rapidly to test this caused this issue?

So indeed, on X3D CPUs, enabling XMP/EXPO can result in Sleep instability... I have no idea how I've been having stable Wake from Sleep past 8 or so months with XMP enabled... I will keep XMP disabled and will continue testing to see if problem comes back or not.

I hope MSI devs see this...

It's not EXPO per se' but probably the speed and/or timings. I did not enable EXPO. I chose 6000MT/s and manually set the timings and it still happens.

I need to try with curve optimizer disabled.

I need to try with curve optimizer disabled.
I have -20 Curve Optimizer all cores, yet disabling XMP was enough to completely fix sleep for me... I will continue testing with XMP disabled.
My Linux sleep problem is also fixed (if I do not sleep it again immediately after it is woken up, problem does not happen)..
Does anyone know which RAM voltage in BIOS can be "meddled with" to help stabilize this sleep issue maybe? (so that we can keep XMP/EXPO enabled and also fix sleep?)

Same issue here with a 7800X3D. Havn't tried disabling XMP yet to resolve? Just sent a ticket to MSI about it then searched forum and found this. Very annoying.

I disabled XMP yesterday and it wouldn't boot up at all. Had to Clear CMOS. Set Bios all back to default and then it booted. But even now with XMP memory running at 4800 instead of 6000 won't wake up from sleep. Bios VS E7D75AMS.1J4 Maybe I could try a more recent Bios or other threads said Bios version 7D75v17 was the last Best Stable version?

Computer runs just fine when it does boot up. And I can always boot by holding down the power button to power off then press button to power up. Except for whatever happen when I tried to disable XMP that one time. Been running fine since my new computer build about August 1st except for this annoying wake from sleep problem. If I power down the computer it has no problem powering back up so I have been doing that more often now instead of letting it go into power saving sleep mode. Thought about maybe looking at buying a new MB but seen problems with Gigabyte boards and a coil whine problem, Asus with Memory & boot problems, Maybe AsRock would be an option? I guess I will wait and see if they can get this fixed since its more annoying than if it won't boot up at all? Good luck to all - hope they figure it out?

Memory I'm using G.SKILL Trident Z5 Neo RGB Series (AMD Expo) DDR5 RAM 32GB (2x16GB) 6000MT/s CL30-38-38-96 1.35V Desktop Computer Memory UDIMM - Matte Black (F5-6000J3038F16GX2-TZ5NR)

MSI Tech support said this so not much help of course
Ticket:
Not rebooting after Sleep or Power off state

Content:
This could be an issue with your PSU or the motherboard. I would start by seeing if you can get the power supply replaced. If that doesn't work highly likely it is an issue with the board.

Is your MCR disabled? Mine is disabled...
Or maybe try this: (I haven't tried it yet. Because, long story short, I cannot clear CMOS as my PC chassis side panel is glued to the rest of the chassis and cannot be opened lol... I will see what I can do but for now I cannot clear my CMOS)

Ticket:
It seems X3D CPUs cannot resume from sleep if XMP/EXPO enabled.

Content:
Regarding your concern, please clear CMOS (How to clear CMOS. Please refer to the manual) for a try, then only enable the XMP in bios to check. If the issue still persists, please manual enable the memory context restore (BIOS>Overclocking) option in bios for a try.
