Board: X670E Tomahawk WIFI
BIOS: 7E12v1E
GPU: AsRock RX 7900 XT Phantom Gaming OC
CPU: Ryzen 7 7800X3D
Cooler: Noctua NH-D15
RAM: 2x16GB Corsair Vengeance 6000MHz
SSD: Samsung 2TB 990 PRO
PSU: Corsair 850W RM850x
SYS: Windows 11 Home x64 Ver. 10.0.22631

About 7/10 times the pc wakes up normally from sleep mode, during which red and yellow light on motherboard (CPU, RAM) flash. 3/10 times the lights light up for about 30 seconds, after which they turn off about the same time. After this only black screen, USB devices get power (leds on mouse light up, not on keyboard) but no other connection. Have waited for over 30 minutes, no change. Always gets fixed by forced shutoff via holding down the power button, after this boots up to saved state (previous applications open etc.) No problems on regular startup.

Worked normally for about a year, problem started a few months ago suddenly. Didn't disconnect or open up the PC / download any software / do anything else notable which could have caused system change. All temps during benchmarks normal and no problems during running. PC has never crashed etc.

List of things that have not fixed the problem:

Updated BIOS
Reset BIOS settings through BIOS menu, haven't cleared CMOS with jumping
Updated GPU drivers
Updated Windows from 10 to 11
Reset Windows power settings through troubleshooting
Turned off fast startup
Unplugged and reconnected PSU (also removed and reconnected GPU, didn't try to boot without it)
RAM are in slots A2 and B2 per the manual, as they have always been

Not a huge problem, but very annoying since I primarily keep PC in sleep mode. Also have to think that constant forced shutoff doesn't do the PC any favors. Any thoughts on possible fixes? Could clearing CMOS have any other effect than resetting through the BIOS menu does?

Hello, new user who was searching for this issue for a while since I build my computer. Somewhere along the way a year ago it stopped waking up from sleep. It can wake up, but I would say 1 out of 3 times it does, the rest it turns on, fans spin, but no signal or no input from the keyboard/mouse. I noticed that when this happens I see a red and an orange light turn on the motherboard (CPU/RAM) which prompted me to look again for solutions as I previously thought it was my GPU but I had replaced it a few months ago. My only solution now is turning off the PC at night which is a bummer as I like to just click and continue working.
A bit disappointing that this is the solution for now. I am on the latest BIOS, as I understand going back to a year-old BIOS is not viable either? Not too computer savvy so don't want to mess something up.
This is on a MSI 670P-WIFI motherboard. I too, tried most of the possible solutions here. I also am inclined to think this is BIOS voltage issue/RAM.

Just a shame, I went for a more expensive motherboard when I think a cheaper one would have given me the ability to sleep my PC. If anyone has a solution that worked, please let me know
I have pretty much exact same issue.
No real solution seems to have been found. BIOS updates are ultimately downgrading the hardware functionality.
Your board and my board are no longer selling on Amazon, and soon will be left in the dust with even less support/updates.
Only real solution is sell your hardware while its worth something and buy from a better brand, or get a Mac.
This post been open for almost 1.5yr with zero progress, cant see things improving tbh.

I had an issue like this with a B650 Tomahawk. Though, in my case, the issue would also happen on cold boots. It started with occasional long boot times, then it progressed until it wasn't able to boot anymore (only one out of like 20-50 attempts was successful). Same with waking up from sleep, the red and yellow lights would turn on and stay on.

This doesn't have to be the motherboard, and I'm not sure why so many people immediately jump to that conclusion. I was able to verify that, in my case at least, it was the CPU, which I successfully RMAd. I was able to reproduce exactly the same issue with a different motherboard and a different RAM kit. It is still possible that the issue was caused by the mainboard or an early version of its BIOS. Back then, issues with voltages were common across different AM5 boards. Maybe a spike in voltage damaged the CPU, which then progressively deteriorated.

Is your MCR disabled? Mine is disabled...
Or maybe try this: (I haven't tried it yet. Because, long story short, I cannot clear CMOS as my PC chassis side panel is glued to the rest of the chassis and cannot be opened lol... I will see what I can do but for now I cannot clear my CMOS)

Ticket:
It seems X3D CPUs cannot resume from sleep if XMP/EXPO enabled.

Content:
Regarding your concern, please clear CMOS (How to clear CMOS. Please refer to the manual) for a try, then only enable the XMP in bios to check. If the issue still persists, please manual enable the memory context restore (BIOS>Overclocking) option in bios for a try.
you don't need to open the board or to clear CMOS to reset BIOS to default settings. Use the flash BIOS button on the back of the case/board and flash a new/old version of BIOS. That will reset the settings to stock and disable XMP/EXPO.

I wrote a while ago that I also had a problem with waking my computer. Interestingly, I haven't had any problems with it going into sleep mode for over a year and a half. It all started over a year ago. A few days ago, I noticed that after a reset, the computer wouldn't boot or took a very long time to boot. Of course, the yellow LED on the motherboard was on. Nothing had been changed on the computer throughout my ownership, and the problems mentioned above appeared on their own. I haven't even touched the BIOS settings (Expo+MCR enabled).

Would changing the motherboard, for example, to a B850, help, or is it the RAM?

Yeah, my story is similar, I believe it’s a CPU issue too. Quote from another post I made:

I have had memory training issues since I got my 7700x and b650 pro. Over time, it got to the point where putting the system to sleep would fail to wake 1/2 the time, then about year ago it stopped waking from sleep entirely. Now, it will no longer reboot at all, I have to cold boot it every time which is super annoying.

I just got a new Gigabyte Aorus b850m mobo with latest bios and all of the issues are still there - so I believe the issue is related to the CPU. Currently working with AMD to see if they will RMA it since it’s still under warranty.

I’ve been doing some reading on the memory controller/SOC voltage on these chips, and there seems to be a hypothesis that running the higher voltages from PBO, EXPO, etc can slowly degrade the IMC.

Maybe an OC expert can chime in?

Either way, doesn’t seem like anything a BIOS update can fix, it’s inherent to the CPU.

I have the same issue on my PRO B850M-A WIFI, it seems to be a regression introduced in bios version 2.A31. Fortunately, i can just use 2.A30 for now, but i'd prefer being able to use the latest version moving forward.

I sold my setup and switched to Mac.
Before I sold it I fully tested while system was dismantled. Maybe this helps someone.
  • MSI MAG Mortar WIFI (B650M)
  • Ryzen 5 7600
  • Crucial Pro DDR5 5600
  • ASRock Intel A380 6GB OC
When I bought system, i had no A380 gpu. BIOS/driver was regularly updated. EXPO prof1 enabled. MCR enabled. Sleep working fine.
I then installed A380 GPU, did few BIOS/driver updates, sleep and everything working ok for 12months or more.
Then over time sleep stopped working. When attempting to resume from sleep, RGB lights on, fans spin, but no display. System unresponsive. Mains power draw was about half of what it should be. So something was not powering up internally. Since then I had to shutdown system everytime.
It must have been some update, but I wasn't paying attention which and perhaps the first few times I assumed the inability to resume was just a system/OS crash.

When I sold system, I removed A380 gpu, sold this first, continued to use system. I had same existing OS, no changes. Sleep started working immediately.
So i think something in BIOS/driver was not instructing to power up the installed GPU in my case on resume. Also ties in with the half power draw on mains plug. So if you have a GPU, try remove it, see if sleep/resume works.

Maybe i should have troubleshooted more, but eventually got tired of lack of support and BIOS/drivers getting considerably flakier with every release and wasting any more time on it.

Good luck, hope you find fix soon.

The same thing happened to me. For a year and a half, the computer worked flawlessly. It would wake up from sleep every time. Resetting it was no problem. Suddenly,, about a year ago, the computer started having intermittent problems with waking up. Now it won't wake up at all, and resetting it doesn't work either (fans spin, no display). To reset the computer, I have to turn it on and off using the power button. I never changed anything on the computer or updated the BIOS before the problems started.

Welp, I swapped out my MSI x670 motherboard to an Asus. Now my computer is sleeping normally. I'm still thinking its something software related with BIOS with the motherboard and how it interacts with the RAM. I shouldve dual booted just to try with W10 or Linux to see if it worked.

I have the same issue. MSI support is refusing to help me since I do not use QVL listed rams, I'm wondering if anyones facing this wake up problem using the QVL listed rams? So MSI could care a bit at least.

my RAM is on the qvl list but my mobo is no longer under warranty. I will be changing the motherboard to another one, probably Asus soon.

I ran into the same issue with the MSI B650 Gaming Plus WiFi + AMD Ryzen 7700x. Computer was doing fine for a year or two then all of the sudden the computer would not wake from S3 sleep. The issue has been very inconsistent too, sometimes it freezes on every wake and other times it’ll wake just fine.

After finding this thread I can only assume that an early combination of MSI motherboards and AMD’s AM5 chips lead to a slow degradation somehow. Except differently from many people in this thread, the issue for me has started to show up even with XMP disabled.

In my attempts to diagnose the issue, I decided to run MemTest86 and the Windows Memory Diagnostic tool to see if there was anything wrong with my RAM (Corsair Vengeance 32 GB (2x16) DDR5-6000 CL36) and the RAM passed both tests with flying colors.

I’ve tried every setting combination under the sun to see if I could get something working, including clearing CMOS, nothing has worked so far.

At this point, I’ll try reaching out to AMD for an RMA on my CPU and hope I have the same success that HoovaDevil had. Crossing my fingers that if I get a replacement, the newer bios on the MSI motherboard won’t cause this issue again with a fresh CPU. If it does, MSI will lose a customer.

PSA:
7E12v1K does not fix the wake-from-sleep issue when RAM is overclocked (via EXPO or manual RAM OC).
Lowering "CPU NB/SoC Voltage" down to 1,25 V does not fix it like it fixes the warm reboot issue.

Has anyone solved this problem by changing the CPU or motherboard?

I can't even restart the computer anymore. I have to perform a hard reset by holding down the power button. Even disabling EXPO and PBO settings doesn't help.

PRO-B650-P-WIFI with the same lack of sleep resume capability (Win 11 Pro), can't remember the last time this computer was able to resume from sleep.
I've tried all the options suggested:
Latest BIOS with default settings
Disable EXPO
No OC.
Making sure both Memory Context Restore and Power Down Enable were set to the same (auto/disabled/enabled)
Nothing seems to work.

Maybe someone can figure out what's what.
