So, the M.2_1 slot keeps reverting to PCIe 1 x 4 on a cold boot, sometimes just a reboot from within Windows. Manually setting it to Gen 4 or 5 within the BIOS will get it to run full speed until the next shut down/cold boot, then it's back to 1 x 4 again. Basically, I have to keep switching between gen 4 and 5 setting on every boot or it's stuck at 1 x 4. Auto is also broken. Samsung 990 Evo Plus 1TB.

I've seen another user on Reddit with the exact same issue. Same board, different drive. Anyone using this board, check your drive speed!

Chiming back in to say that I've been on the A5 bios that was released then pulled, and my M2_1 issues disappeared.
I've got the x870e Tomahawk and my routine is power up morning, and shut down at night. I did disable fast boot in Windows if that matters, and my drive is a 4x4, so that's the interface I'm looking for.

Before The A5, morning boots never launched with the proper 4x4 interface. It always launched with 1x4. Rebooting 1-5 times is what it took for it to load into Windows with the correct interface speed. Course, if i had to reboot during the day, it'd drop back to 1x4 for me to play reboot roulette all over again.

For the past couple weeks, after A5, every boot's been with the proper M2_1 interface of 4x4. There hasn't been any nuance to it; it just works.

Hopefully they re-release it soon, and address it on other boards - or admit something's screwed up and recall the lot.

Currently sitting here waiting to build with an x870e Tomahawk and Crucial T705 for m2_1... Thinking about giving MSI until the end of the week to address this before looking for a different motherboard.

Could these be placebo bios updates? The erroneous behavior reportedly happens at random, and merely loading a new bios might cause something to happen.

Which motherboard are you referring to? Although this thread is about the Tomahawk, it seems at some point folks started chiming in about the Godlike as well. From what I can tell, the folks with the Tomahawk X870E who have been using the beta BIOS have been reporting pretty consistently that the issue is fixed (and this is so in my case). So, I think at least for the Tomahawk X870E, it is not a "placebo bios update."

A MAG X870E TOMAHAWK WIFI AMD AM5 is sitting unopened on my table waiting to go into a new build.
If this model is 100% broken, I want to return the board rather than bother installing it.
MSI support does not seem to have commented on this thread for weeks: since March 28th.
Thanks to everyone who is commenting. It's very confusing.

I have the Godlike. Checking if PCI slots run properly isn't something that any buyer generally checks when researching a new build!
I've kept it and used the M2_2 slot for my Samsung 9100. Too much hassle and expense involved in returning/RMA

Quick question about MSI BIOSes - how do I tell which is a Beta and which isn't?
With my old Gigabyte, a letter after the version would indicate a Beta (such as F10a, F11c etc)
Running 1A3 on my Godlike which I assume isn't a Beta?

To me the beta BIOS didnt sort the M2 speed problem, unfortunately. Ive CMOS-ed after, of course, with zero results.

I've been using my x870e Tomahawk with the A41 beta BIOS for about a month now, and I haven't had a single issue with my M2_1 port. Whether after a reboot or waking from sleep, my 990 Pro is always in 4x4 mode, and the Crystaldiskmark tests are normal.

I haven't even had the infamous "0d" bug once, and yet I use monitoring software every day... which is weird, because I don't think that bug is fixed.

In fact, I really had zero problems with this card. Assembling the PC, installing Windows, drivers and software, updating and tinkering with the BIOS: everything went smoothly. I've never had such a stable PC. Have others had the same experience as me or am I a special case?

I just tried the new x870e Godlike BIOS A.31 from the other thread plus AMD's latest chipset drivers released a few days ago (not available on MSI's website) and it made no difference for me. All issues persist. Tried it in gen 4 mode, gen 5 mode, auto, reset CMOS, etc. issue still occuring no differences noticed.

I also re-disocvered an old thread from 2023 describing this exact problem on the x670e godlike. MSI has literally known about this for YEARS and still has not solved it (at least on the godlike) and even released nrw generations of boards falsely advertising they have functional m.2 slots that seemingly have never actually worked. i am borderline ready to say nothing less than a class action lawsuit will make them take this seriously, i mean, looking at the x670e threads... its been years! why would we think they would treat the x870e with any more action than they have shown they have done in the past?

My only hope is some people saying the tomahawk beta worked. But even that didn't work for everyone and they immediately pulled the update.

I'd tend to agree about the lawsuit avenue. It's something I've considered looking into after some other steps are taken first. I'm a retired business owner of 25 years with fairly deep pockets, and a lot of time on my hands right now. It's not something I'd like to do, but when such blatantly false advertising of a product is made along with the lousy customer service...well, it sure makes it easier to want to take some type of action.

BTW, A34 bios dropped on MSI's website this morning. No real description on what it fixes (AGESA PI-1.2.0.3c released). Unfortunately, I'll be out of pocket the next couple days and unable to test it out. I'll at least be able to follow this thread to see if anyone has any luck with it. Fingers crossed. 🤞

** Looks like new AMD chipset drivers just dropped too.

I see 7E59v2A52 for the X870E Tomahawk is released today. Place your bets, folks! Will it fix everything? Will it fix anything? Will it stay up more than 2 days?
Stay tuned for the next exciting episode...

Edit: clarified BIOS/board

I installed the new AMD chipsets (no issues), but I'll wait a tiny bit before installing the bios update 😅. Just to be sure...

This is the way.

Which is really funny when you think about it. We are all desperately anxious for a new BIOS update that hopefully fixes all of our issues. But thanks to MSI's extremely asinine communication, and lack of transparency, every time a new BIOS drops it's like we're all virtually sitting in a waiting room looking at each other to see who will go first.

3 restarts with the A34 BIOS + AMD chipset 7.04.09.545 on the godlike and it is back in 1.0 x 4 mode. Turned off PSPP and PSS and tried again and 4 restarts later I was again in 1.0 x 4 mode. I really don't think they are actually trying to fix this anymore (were they ever?). I don't have the same resources you do, but I have the technical knowledge and I am an engineer with years of experience in root cause analysis and this seems pretty easy to prove from a technical standpoint that MSI is selling products that do not do what they say they do. I do not know how to go about finding a lawyer but I am interested in joining an effort to figure it out if you and/or other folks join.

I feel like there needs to be more exposure on the issues. GamersNexus. LTT. der8auer. Something like that. But I'm not sure how to go about getting enough traction with some of those youtubers. I've emailed some and made comments about it here and there, but even searching on things like youtube, there is basically zero mention about any of this stuff.

same board/nvme/bios. no issues at all.
