??Please insert Disk in \Device\Harddisk\DR6??

Hi everyone,
every so often i get the message "Please insert Disk in \Device\Harddisk\DR6" as an error with Continue, Try Again, Cancel as options. I normally just click a whole bunch of times until it disappears... doesn't seem to affect anything.

Think it's got to be to do with the Promise RAID I have. Anyone with similar problems?

Specs in my sig. Notice I have a Beta BIOS - this may be the issue too.

It could be the BIOS. Do you have the SATA driver installed in Windows? When does this come up? When you load something from HDD or CD/DVD?

it's mostly when i do copies from place to place, some CD/DVD stuff for sure. I have the promise drives from the MSI K8T CD installed in windows (and of course the fast-trak ones from the floppy for the XP install).

i also get the weird thing with CDEX where it asks me to insert a disk into drive C, even though my system drive is drive G, and i have a multicard reader as C/D. (my dvd is E, CD is F...) i have the raid as 3 100Gb partitions in windows

Never had the problem, it must be floppy or CD if 'insert device', whats shown in boot sequence in bios, or in device manager, CD settings may need adjusted. (auto boot), or then again is it the network boot. What is drive 6 in disk management?

ok, so (from memory, cos i'm at work )

boot sequence... DVD, CD, floppy, (other boot devices=yes)

i don't think it's floppy or CD, as it mentions harddisk...

here's my setup:

a: floppy
b: <not used>
c: CF Microdrive (Card reader)
d: SD/MMC (Card reader)
e: DVD RW
f: CD RW
g: system (RAID partition)
h: datastore (RAID partition)
i: toolbox (RAID partition)
s: iPod

that's it...

Yikes, how did you manage that.
C:/ is the MBR disk, you have that at G:/ yes?

no wonder its confused, I am.

Its beyond me, I can never get the C: disk to change drive letter.

the MBR is on G:\, as far as i know...

the reason it works as it does is because the C:\ and D:\ are USB drives, and the RAID is the last thing created in the XP install, so it assumes the remaining drive letters. notice my CD/DVD drives are higher in the pecking order too!

i am thinking it is the BIOS, as i've not had it before, but i didn't run the 1.1 BIOS for long because I had memory stability issues and was trying everything to get it stable (including flashing the BIOS).

i just wondered if anyone else had come across it before, if not, then the logical conclusion is that it is the BIOS having issues with my drive arrays, and confusing XP...

As a point of reference how do i check where the MBR is stored?

I live and learn.


The Disk management will show which drives are bootable, logical etc

Right click My Computer, then manage, then disk management.

on the right hand side, you can use chart to adjust, partition, format. The tools menu is handy for checking errors and stuff

yeah, i use manage all the time, i figured the disk setup was cool, the MBR must be on G:\.

still doesn't explain the wierdness though. it's got to be the BIOS, hasnt it? maybe i should ask MSI direct, un less ol' Bas-ter has an answer...?

never install raid with any other writable drive in the box

or it will do wierd things and write files to another drive

i bet there was a media in the micro drive has some thing on it windows wants

i would start again with just the 2 raid drives and a cdrom,then add the others after

fact it calls that drive c says some thing odds gone on

there was no media in the drive when i installed the system. CD_ex is the only thing that calls for something in drive c. my system has been subjected to a lot of abuse in the last month, and i am all but convinced that it is the BIOS flash that is causing the error. i might try a newer build of CD_ex for giggles to see if it clears up that issue.

also, if there is a newer BIOS i might try that... what's the latest (beta or not)
