Hi hmurrayhocp,

I had the same problem with my MSI GT80 2QE Titan notebook when it was new. However, my notebook is two years older than yours and I'm running Win 7 Ultimate and slightly different MSI software. I'll explain what happened to me and how I solved it and hopefully it will give you enough information to solve your situation, too.

To troubleshoot the problem, I used Microsoft's MSConfig utility that comes with Windows. Using its "Services" tab, I hid all the Microsoft services so only the non-Microsoft services were visible. Then I disabled all of the MSI (Micro Star) services and tested my notebook to see if the problem stopped. It did. When I rebooted, my power profile no longer changed. Then I started adding back the MSI services one at a time, rebooting and retesting my notebook after each one, until I discovered which service was causing the problem. In my case it was the SCM (system control manager). Evidently, it was overriding the power profile choice that I made. And, even if I changed the settings of the "Balanced" profile, it would restore the default settings.

My notebook needed the SCM because it enables the Fn function keys, GPU and Turbo Cool buttons and lots of other stuff. And some of the other MSI software like the Dragon Gaming Center and Silent Option are dependent on it. So disabling the SCM was not an option for me. The solution I finally used was to edit every Windows power profile on my notebook so they had the same settings. This stopped the problem and my notebook has remained on the settings that I want. For some unknown reason, if they were all configured the same, the SCM would no longer restore the "Balanced" profile to its default settings (perhaps it gets the "default" values from one of the other profiles and, since I changed all the profiles to have the same settings, nothing changes). But I'm using my notebook as a desktop replacement and I'm never running it only on battery. In fact, on those rare occasions when I must travel with it, I always use the AC/DC adapter whenever I need to run the notebook. So I have no problem running it at its maximum performance settings 100% of the time.

Kind regards, David

Spot ON!
It was the SCM service on mine as well. After I disabled the service, the SCM still shows up in the tool tray, but the powercfg stays at what I set it at.
