I have the newest bios, the 1.44b4, and for some reason when I go into them and set my BCLK Multiplier up to 21 instead of 20, (which it will let me move it to 21 with Turbo off and C-state and all that stuff off) it will work and boot.  I am running 3511.6 Mhz Core spd, with a 175 BCLK.  But for some reason when I set the ratio to 21 and put the CPU under load, either LinX or Prime 95 the ratio falls back down to 20.  Now I have Turbo Boost off, and HT on, and all my voltage default, not auto but default, expect the core which is 1.216V.  SO I do not know why the Multi is going down to 20 under max load.  When the mutli is set to 21 the core volatge also kinda sets itself about +0.02 volts more when it is under I would say 75% load or less and then when it goes back down to 20 it is again 1.216V.  I also would like to know about my QPI voltage.  I do not get a reading in BIOS for voltage so I do not want to mess with those yet until the new beta bios hopefully have a real time reading so I know 100% what they are.

Did you disable Overspeed Protection?  I'm waiting for a QPI addition to the bios as well.  1.4b4 was odd for my system.  Crashed in prime w/ same settings as 1.4b3.  I think your multi drops back because of OSP.  Mine did it in 144 among other strange things.

Hi jake & welcome to the forum. I don't know how it's possible to unlock 'any' locked CPU with a bios or any bios revision. The Intel Turbo Boost 'will' allow an increase in frequency to the limit of the factory preset. If anyone can accomplish & maintain an unlock of their 920 to above a 20 multiplier, a bunch of us would sure like to know how to do it.

Having the QPI V. would for sure be a great thing to have. Get ahold of MSI Tech. Support & ask when we can expect it in an official bios release.

Joker I will have to try it and I will get back to you.  So are you saying it works for you at a contast multi if 21 even under 100 % load?  That is what is wrong I can get the multi of 21 just not when I run prime95 or linX.

mechsner, I would just like to clear up that I can boot up with a multi of 21, asnd everything is fine, excpet the coltages, Vcore, moves up about 0.02 Volts when on.  But whenever I put the CPU under any load over 75% or so the multi will drop down to 20 and volatges go back to what I have them set to.  Then when I turn off any program that is causing the load over 75% (linX/Prime95) the multi will jump back to 21 and again increase my core speed.  So I am able to get it to run at a multi of 21, I just can not get it to stay there under a 100% load when stressing system.  I do have turbo disabled, and am able to control core multiplier and I can pick 21.  So I believe that the mobo makers have made a loop hole to unlock that 21 multiplier and use it.

Tested it , it's like mechsner says , i can put multiplier of 23 ( i7 940) but when i stress it ,it drops back to 22.( cinebench , prime95)
So there are two ways to enjoy turbomode on this mobo.
1= Enable eist and turbo.
2=disable eist so turbo mode disappears and CPU ratio pops up and you can ad one multiplier on the CPU.

This is my conclusion.

bios 1.4B3
i7 940

I was able to set it up to a 21 multi with only 2 cores or 4 threads, but when over 4 threads it bumps down to 20.  I think it has something to do with the TDP.  Will check into more.

Tested w/prime several times, drops back to 20 under full load.  Sorry to jump the gun, thought I was lucky.  Apologies to all.  :worship:

Great thread! Lot's of info unfolding here. I have to go with mechsner on his analysis. Setting the multiplier to 21 'is' resulting in a 'semi-unlock' to one (maybe 2?) core(s), as allowed by Intel. Under heavy sustained load, it reverts back to it's native multiplier which is normal behavior. Joker, (you fortunate guy!), seems to have an 'exception' to the rule 920.

Edit: Thanks Joker for the update! Was going to ask you about putting your 920 up for bid? lol

I don't think its right.  I don't remember this from anything I've read about other boards.  It seems backwards. (bug?) I don't trust it so I'm back to Eist enabled.  I want it to kick in when needed, not kick off.

Hello,
Since I have updated my BIOS to version 1.2 and on, I have been able to use the "locked" core multiplier of 21 with the CPU. Now I do Have Turbo mode DISABLED, I have c1/c2 disabled EIST off, I have over speed protection off, I have c1e off and all other power saving modes, not mentioned. Now when I have the core speed ratio I am able to move it up from 20 to 21, it is applied to all 4 cores. It works when I boot up the computer. The only thing is when I go to stress test my CPU the multiplier goes down from 21 back to 20. Now it will only move down to 20 if I have 3 cores or more on 100% load with a stress test (prime 95, LinX and others) When 2 cores or less are at 100% load the multiplier of 21 stays on all 4 cores. I also noticed that when I do use the multiplier of 21 and I set all the voltages to the default, not auto, but all +0.00V the normal voltages, the voltage is larger than what I selected in BIOS. I was running the Base clock of 175Mhz, with the multiplier of 20, giving me a 3.5Ghz Core Speed. With the same base clock but with the 21 multiplier I get about a 3.7 Core speed. The voltage with the 21 multiplier are also different from what I set them to in BIOS. The CPU should run at 1.192V, but with the multiplier of 21 the voltage for the core is 1.275ish, so about a .08 increase, with me not doing anything to ANY voltages in BIOS. Please let me know if MSI is trying to go around the Intel turbo mode locked multiplier and let us use the 21 multiplier all the time? Or is it a bug that the 21 multiplier is an option and that is why it only works when the 3 or more cores are at 100% Or is it possible to use the 21 multiplier all the time under 100% load with all 4 cores. I also do have Hyper threading on but it did not make a difference with or without it, I tested with both on and off HT. I am trying to put an image with this of both times, when the 20 multiplier is used and the 21 multiplier is used.

Sent to MSI Tech Support, maybe I can get an answer?  Would be nice to have 21 multi  ;-))

It is difficult to speculate if MSI is by accident or by design, skirting a built in 'lock' to allow 'full time' 21 multiplier on all 4 cores of the 920. One would think Intel would be screaming 'foul' if true. Just guessing here, but suspect an 'illusion' of full operation with 4 cores at 21 multiplier.

If you put one extra multiplier , (eist disabled) it will react the same way as turbomode.
I tested it with cinebench i get the same results with turbo or with one multiplier added.( single thread), my multiplier stays 23.
Multi threaded = multiplier drops to 22.
I think MSI made this possible because EIST is a Intel energy saving tool , and sometimes it makes an overclock unstable , so with EIST disabled and one multiplier added , you still can enjoy turbo.
My benchmark scores are all the same ,

Turbo will NEVER kick in under full load , if 4 cores are stressed 100% your turbo mode will be turned off , check CPU-Z , you will see that under stress ( 4 cores 100%) the cpu speed will drop as well your TDP of your cpu from 150watt to 130watt (check hardwaremonitor from CPUID).Turbo mode ,this mode essentially automatically overclocks a single core of the CPU under certain loads.  You do get a 1x multiplier boost in dual-threaded apps , like games.

For  some reason I can get turbo to run according to Cpu-z and other apps, that all 4 cores run at 21 multi, maybe it error, or I do not understand.  It might be reading 21 but when at idle all 4 cores get it but when gaming or other apps only 1 core gets the 21x.  I did not notice only one core with the 21 multi while running some apps, Ill check again.

Hey Joker about the QPI reading in BIOS, this is what MSI sent me:Dear Jake,

For your issue,we have consulted with bios and H/W engineer, there is no way to read the OPI voltage.
There is no circuitry to sensor to monitor the QPI voltage.

Best wishes,
MSI technical support team,

Hey I found A GREAT review of eclipse x58 mobo, we kicked all the others asses in benchies.  :agrees:  Looks pretty good, I am happy with my decision to get this mobo.

HA forgot to put in link  :lol_anim:

They reviewed like 5 others compared to the eclipse.
