I have the MSI X58 Eclipse SLI,
Diamond Radeon HD 4870 X2
Intel core i7 920 2.66 lga 1366 quad core
microsoft windows vista home premium 64 bit
corsair dominator 6 GB 3x2GB 240 pin ddr 3 sdram ddr 3 1600
cooler master ucp 1100 watt power supply
vigor monsoon II dual 120mm fan s cooler
antec twelve hundred case
2 Western Digital velociraptor 300 gig 3.5 sata drives
1 western digital terabyte drive

Ok i have the 2 drives on raid 7/8 slots....

ever since i built my computer i get a No operating system found about 1/3 the times i boot up, the other 2/3 it boots fine.

Then one day several months into my build it stopped recognizing any drives, until i removed the terabyte drive from a Sata slot and then the 7/8 slot raid popped up again... it would not even read any drives for boot sequence in the bios with the 1 TB connected.  So I just disconnected it since it was a dump drive anyway.... Everything ran fine for a while and now lately I've been getting Smart drive failure errors, but when I finally get windows to boot past that warning, I run all the western digital tests and HD tests I can find and it reads 100 percent fine on my hard drives.   My computer wouldn't even get past the smart drive screen until i unhooked all of my USB cables for some reason...  It's being very quirky...  and sometimes it says I'm running at 133/21 even though its supposed to be 133/20 at 2660....

And my LED2 panel never worked from the beginning... but i didn't feel like RMA'ing the MB

I'm just wondering are my drives actually failing or is this my motherboard? and why would my motherboard not read any drives whatsoever when I hook up my TB dump drive??

And why do i keep getting the 'no operating system found' error.

Aside from that, once i get my computer to boot into windows i have 0 problems, 0 crashes, and everything runs smoothly....

but now with this smart drive failure thing, when i hit 'f1' to continue  i have to reboot several times before it goes to windows...  it says my hard drives support smart drive log, where can i find this log???

Anyone have suggestions?

Not sure if i tried that, when i ran into that problem I gave up after i disconnected it and everything worked again... i suppose it might work and want to install an OS... I have the CD/DVD drive on the SATA (1-4 i think)  that come out the side of the motherboard near the power connector, the raid on 7/8 like the manual suggests and i had the terabyte on the 9/10 ones below 7/8.... but i tried connecting it to the 1-4 satas on the side of the board to no success.... I want to fix that problem as well but I'm concerned about the smart drive issue too... it's really debilitating having to reboot 15 times until i get into windows

i'll try a few things at home tonight, but has anyone had similar problems? and why does it say 'no operating system' every other time i boot.... and when it doesn't say that its' giving me a smart drive error... anyone got ideas??? the only reason I think it might be related to the motherboard is that when i plug in my extra drive it wont' read any of my drives... and all the HD tests I ran come back 100 percent flawless...

When the board detects a drive without operating system, it will show you the message. Right now, we have to narrow down if the 1TB drive is making all the problems. Please do try out with just the 1 TB drive connected to the system.

Ok the 1TB not connected I still get 'no operating system found' sometimes.... that happened for months without the 1TB connected... now i'm getting a Smart DRive Failure message, I reboot a few times then it goes into windows just fine.... Sometimes I get no o.s. error still.... When i connect the 1TB drive I get nothing at all, I think the drive is dead.  I hooked up another SATA in the same sata slot on the MB with same power cable and it worked fine.

So far I still have the Smart drive failure, and the No operating system found error... But thats it, I think the it's time to RMA the terabyte drive... is there any way I can run tests on it if its' not reading the HD at all?

The 2 western digital 300 gig drives on raid 0 are fairly new along with the 1 terabyte drive, I can't believe that it crashed and the raid drives are failing too... and my case runs so cold it's overkill.

Any ideas why all 3 drives might of failed, or do you think it's common?  And the 2 raided drives are scanning 100 percent error free with the WD smart drive software I downloaded.

Any suggestions on the steps i should take to resolve my drive problems, and get rid of the SMART error?

are all the drives pluged in to the black sata ports ?

if your not using the esata ports on the back you can disable them i found it to be slow with it enabled and nothing plugged in

in the bios you have extra raid controler iirc these are the blue ports that are flat on the bored and the ide port if you not using them disable them
you may find it to be better

also if s.m.a.r.t is causing a problem disable that also and try

atm i have an acard running raid and once every now and again it fails one drive but with a restart its fine may just be a bios issue

I'll RMA the 1 TB, its just a dump drive.  the 2 300 gig sata velociraptor drives just give me the smart error about 60 percent of the time i boot up... I'll try disabling all the extra drives, that does sound nice because my bootups take way longer than it should.  I consider it a pretty fast computer to be hanging up on loading usb/sata drives for 5 mins every bootup.... I haven't seen where I can disable the SMART drive technology... any one know ?

Just an update!! I got home today, my computer would not boot and kept giving me smart error over and over, or no operating system... So I disconnected the 3 usbs in the back (keyboard, mouse, mic)  and then the smart error went away.... this seems to be consistent... Why would removing my USB devices effect the smart drive error??  Maybe the drives spool down before it loads them? and without the USB's it registers them faster?? i have no idea.. any suggestions?

Yeah that is not really specific to X58, it happens due to modern motherboard detecting USB device during POST in order to be able to load USB as kb/mouse/bootable drives(useful for eg installing linux/window 7/vista etc).

I believe there is an option to disable that in BIOS if it annoys you(Legancy USB device support or something similiar)

it can also happen with X48/P45 chipset etc etc.

It loads faster without USB because the boot up does not need to detect USB devices. Can you share with us what keyboard, mouse and mic are you using?

i'm using the logitech G15 macroable keyboard and the logitech g5 mouse and logitech usb microphone....my computer booted fine today without smart error, it seems inconsistent.... but when it boots up with it consistently usuually unplugging those devices in bootup fixes it.... But if those caused the problem I wonder why this setup worked fine for the past 6 months until the last 2 weeks...

something must of happened... BTW i started having these errors after windows crashed once with a bluescreen when playing the new Batman assylum game that is very graphics heavy... does the suggest anything?

I have this issue as well with my Eclipse SLI x58 board. Someties it throws a drive read error on boot but this goes away after I open the box and wiggle the cables. Funny thing is, it didn't matter what c able I used, or whether it even ran to the affected drive...

What I think theses issue show is a problem with the IOH chip (that's the chip doing the job of the old northbridge on the X58 chipset). These are notoriously hot on the Eclipse, and the sata ports are furthermore right beneath the main graphics card (if you have a longer and/or wider dual-slot type).

It could well be the heat killing the sata sockets IMHO. Either that or its a manufacturing fault... I'm on my third Eclipse (under warranty) and I still get these errors.

theonlydz,

I agree with Henry, some logitechs G series keyboards can caused a huge headache on bootup. Try with just the keyboard unplugged and see if the system boots up without issues.

I don't get the smart drive error very often anymore now that i have legacy USB support disabled... I still get no operating system 1/3 times I boot and I just reboot and it boots to windows fine.... I still get the smart drive error but its very rare now....

The no o/s error doesn't seem to be related to the USB ports but the smart drive error does...

any further suggestions?? Did they fix the heat issues with the newer versions of this board???

I have liked the board so far but, the no os error is a pain, and I don't like the fact that when my dump drive failed, the board wouldn't recognize any drives until i disconnected the failed drive... even though it was last on the boot list....

would you guys buy this board over again??? I only bought it because toms hardware rated it good, and it was one of the early supporters of the i7 chipset... i got the 920 i7 right when it was released.

Why would you still want to connect the spoil drive to board? Spoilt drives can caused loads of problems especially during booting. It can stalls the system, create dump errors or caused blank screen hangs etc...

I suggest you take the drive out of the system and connect using an external casing as an external drive. There is no need to buy the board again since your current board is still under warranty, thus enabling you to do a RMA if you are really doubtful of the board at its current operating state.

I don't want to buy it again, it was just a question.  the IT guy at my work thinks the BIOS must be bugged if I'm getting smart drive errors due to legacy usb support... I have had the Legacy support turned off in bios for a over a week now and I'm receiving no more smart drive failure errors.  I just updated the bios about 2-3 months ago, thats probably about when the problems started occurring... has anyone heard of these problems? Do you guys think it was the bios?  the problem is still there, I just have to leave legacy support disabled for now.

Don't have any issue with Logitech Keyboard and Mouse on MSI Eclipse SLI
I have G15 Revision 1 and G9 mouse Plugged in and have no issue booting, and yes USB Legacy Support is enabled.
