The Dual Rail Myth

In looking at the newest ATX standard, the ATX12VPower Supply Design Guide, ver 2.01, we find two major changes from the past in that 2 x 12v rails are now advocated, rather than a single 12v rail, in addition to a 24-pin main ATX power connector interface.  How does this dynamically impacts us AMD users?  First, let?s look at some of the changes made from the ATX 1.3 standard and see how they impact us, as power users.

The most important change is the incorporation of 2 x 12v rails, or ?Dual Rail,? technology, where the processor now has basically its very own power interface that is separated from all other power consuming devices on the motherboard.  A Quote from Section 1.2.1, entitled ?Increased +12VDC Output Capability? of the Guide:

?System components that use 12V are continuing to increase in power. In cases where
expected current requirements is greater than 18A a second 12 V rail should be made
available. ATX12V power supplies should be designed to accommodate these increased
+12 VDC currents.?

This may sound like a good thing, and I?m sure that one day it will be a major improvement over past power supply interfaces, however, as an AMD user, the major drawback is that this newest standard (being designed around, and in support of, Intel based technology), took no consideration of AMD/Sli.  ?Our? problem isn?t that AUX ATX 12v Rail-1 is isolated with anywhere from 15amps to 18amps of power for the processor alone, but that the remainder of the entire system must depend upon ATX 12v Rail-2, with it?s 15amps to 18amps, to power all the other devices on the motherboard.  This is a lopsided balance of power in regulating and controlling devices in the average computer system, and becomes more than simple balancing act when this ?design? becomes the limiting factor for system stability in our high powered enthusiast systems.

What?s added to ATX 12v Rail-2 that makes system stability an ?issue? is related to the plethora of new technologies that must all be powered by this single rail.  Aside from SATA/SATA II, standard PCI, in addition to all ?onboard? peripheral interface devices such as multiple gig-lan network connections, multiple (up to ten) USB 2.0 connections, IEEE 1394 interfaces, standard serial/parallel port interfaces, legacy IDE interfaces and audio functions, the ?Guide? takes into consideration a new power hungry interface, being PCI-E, that consumes anywhere from 40watts to 120 watts of power in a single card.  The cpu no longer has the distinction of being the highest power consumer in a computer system, when one considers the amount of power a 6800 Ultra needs to operate properly.  This is a vast amount of power to take into consideration when building a new computer system, and one in which is compounded two fold with the release of nForce 4 SLI, where two such power hungry graphic adapters can coexist in the same system.

Many of you have followed the Dual Rail ?vs- Single Rail argument as it?s been played out in the implementation of NF4 Sli, where I have maintained that dual rail psu?s, as they exist today, are not an efficient use of the power resources these power supplies provide.  Where AUX ATX 12v Rail-1 (for the processor) would run at approximately 35%-50% of it?s available output 60%-70% of the time,  ATX 12v Rail-2 would run at or near 100% of its available output 100% of the time.  Power Supplies are not designed to work under these conditions and it seems that the ?Guide? agrees and has taken this into consideration, where at Sec. 1.2.2. Minimum Efficiency, it points out:

?Minimum measured efficiency is required to be 70% at full and typical (~50%) load and
60% at light (~20%) load. New recommended guidance has been added to provide
direction for future requirements.?

What this tells us is that, indeed, ATX 12v Rail-2 shouldn?t be required to run at more than 70% MAX of it?s available output on a constant ?full and typical? basis.  And it means that Dual Rail psu?s are not the best choice for powering nForce 4 Sli as these power supplies weren?t designed to work in such a lopsided environment.  It is much more efficient to use a high output Single Rail psu with at lease 26a on that 12v rail, where 28a for the Sli dual 6800 Ultra?s is a much more stable environment to run these top of the line cards.  And for those that say, ?well these boards were designed around the ATX 2.01 standard, so they should work just fine,? my answer is that they weren?t ?designed? around NF4 Sli by nature of the limitations the ?Guide? itself places on that second 12v rail.  Another response regards accumulation of the two 12v rails, where 18a & 18a = 36a and plenty to power any motherboard.  My response is this is a total misconception as these power supplies have no ability what-so-ever to accumulate their output current from the two totally separate rails on the fly.  Sure, there are one or two psu?s that do have the ability to combine their output, via a switch, but that ?switch? turns them into essentially a more powerful single rail unit, with less amperage than the total of both 12v rails. Until a psu is designed for Sli, don?t be drawn into the marketing hype about ?Sli Ready? and ?Sli Capable? as their use goes contrary to the very guide that implements them.  You would be much better served with a single rail power supply that can ?efficiently? power that Sli gamers box.  :cool:

Ya it was pointed out earlier and it is the king of the heap for the moment. Notice it is a single rail though? Seems PCP&C is coming back home afterall. I suspect that most will after all the problems.

    * Enermax EG465AX 460W (20 pin!) 3.3V/35A 5V/35A 12V/33A
    * MSI NX7950GX2-T2D1GE (Single card SLI)
    * WD 250GB 8MB Sata
    * Liteon DVD-writer LDW-411S
    * Windows XP SP2

Oh my goodness, it's still that old Enermax FMA 465 in there :lol_anim:
It handles it with ease, no problem at all, even during heavy gaming, it doesn't put out hot air.
I just love the good-old Enermax FMA EG465AX (rated 435Watt), it beats the crap out of those high powered PSU's.
I have not been able to bring it to it's knees yet....and it's way old now.
Funny is that the link to check PSU's rate it as being 33A @ 12V :lol_anim:

However, I still find Enermax real stupid that they replaced this REAL GOOD PSU with new types that are far worse.
As long as my Enie will do it, I will continue to use it, as it's one plain great PSU! :agrees:

So far I have given it a good workout, but it never failed....but I did had to clean it a month ago, so much dust in it, all other PSU's would have been burned :worship:

I will need one when I build my 3rd rig next year...Im getting a bonus this year (anybody remember what a bonus is) but Im holding off upgrading now cause Im waiting for a revised 680i motherboard, quad core cpu, new dual SLI graphics cards, 4 hdds, 24" widescreen....wakeup Chakka (slap, slap) - my bonus aint going to be that big!

Im just waiting for Vista to come out, look to see what runs well using it, see if games really need it and look to do an upgrade probably in the fall of next year....dont want to buy new technology anymore until its proven - remember the old winchester core problems?  My OCZ 520w powerstream and Tagan 480w U22 single 12v rail psus work just fine right now on my first 2 rigs.
 
Ya I am kinda stimied on what to build next as well. I am thinking a Socket F rig but I am still waiting to see what I want for sure and them I will see what I need to power it properly. Short of going a really big screen next round I already have a Vid Card that is more than adaquate on my current monitor and then some so I guess I will be concentrating on CPU power this round. I am just not all that happy with a 4x4 solution as yet. I am thinking of waiting for a true quad and then deciding.

Yes lots of new tech this year...the new nvidia vid cards need 2 6pin connectors for a total of 4 if you go SLI.  The current psus from even PC Power and Cooling only sport a total of 2 6pin connectors (except for the 1 kiloton version it has 4 6pin connectors) so they will need to eventually revise those psus.  So while the vid card tech is even dx10 compliant, Im still waiting to see actual reviews and what users say on forums on how it works with Vista before I buy...learned my lesson from the winni experience!
 
I currently seem to be experiencing the limit of what my current PSU can handle, as it shuts down whenever I try to plug in my Pinnacle PCTV USB stick  :nooo:

Can anyone recommend a vendor that sells any of those neat "single rail" PSUs like the Enermax  FMA 460W or similar? I live in Sweden, and have so far been unable to locate any vendor with a decent single rail PSU for sale, only these silly "dual rail" thingies. And yes, I know that I have one of those things already. I wasn't well informed on what it was at the time, and as Fortron was apparently quite a decent brand according to most of the forums I frequented (I didn't own any MSI products, so I wasn't around here at the time), I got it. It sure served my socket A platform with an overclocked XP2500+ excellently, but it seems to have problems coping with my current rig...

Basically, I would like to get a single rail PSU without modular cables, and at least something like 30A on the 12V line. I'm not planning on going SLI or Crossfire (I basically never play any more demanding games than TES:Morrowind), and I probably won't even be able to get my hands on very extreme video cards, seeing as how I'm sticking with AGP for quite some time still (unless my mobo breaks down or anything). I just want to make sure that I have plenty of power for my current rig, and that I'll be able to expand with additional HDDs (I can still have 5 more with my current mobo), a slightly better videocard, and more RAM without having to bother about the PSU going bad on me anytime soon.

I sure wish Enermax could have their own webshop on their website, like Creative's European section, for example, they are accessible  :grin:

Thanks for the tips, I'm getting really interested in the Tagan TG480-U01 480W, I've seen nothing but positive reviews of it even after an hour of googling and reading, and it should be able to meet my power requirement  :lol_anim:

I'm reading through this discussion, and it's going a bit over my head! Here's the system I've got:

- MSI Socket 939 motherboard based on ATI X200 chipset
- Athlon 64 3000+ processor
- GeForce 6600 video card
- Two optical drives: DVD-RW and DVD
- Floppy drive
- Logitech USB microphone headset

That's all I can think of that's drawing power from the PC's power supply itself.

Where can I find out how many amps each of these components requires, so that I can sum them up and find out what I need? Am I to understand from this thread that the wattage of a power supply doesn't matter any more; what matters is how many amps it can push on the +12V rail?

My current power supply is 500W and provides 17A on +12V. I'd be happy to replace this as long as a new power supply doesn't break the bank. Which one would you recommend I order from Newegg.com?

I have a simple question:

Lets say a PSU has one 14A and one 15A +12v rail. What is the max output for a single video card then? Could I hook up a videocard that needs 18A for example?

I wouldn't bet on it - think that is cutting it to close on almost any entusiasts setup.
A tech (wanted to be anonymous) said in a interview that the PSU manufacturers runs CPU power together with the first VGA cards +12v pci-e power.
So assume that cpu takes 8-10A peak sustained in heavy work - there is not much left before the rail shuts
down if it's curreent limited to 14/15A with also running a mid-high end card on it .

 
See the thing is that you can not add the two rails together. That is what we have talked about with balancing power rails here in the thread. Most PSU makers alocate a certain amount of wattage to 3.3 and 5v and the rest is used but the 12v rail. When you do the math you typically find that the 12v rails when split only offer 50-60% of what the rails are rated at. One rail may be able to use it's full amerage while the other is left with hardly any. The PSU makers do not supply specs on how the split works. So you really are much better off using a single rail where the math is easy.

14/15 split rail setups rarely work well in a modern rig with modern CPU's and Graphics is my experience. I have seen way to many folks have issues with them to ever give you a thumbs up that it will be enough. Granted it may work in some cases but I would not even bet on which one's it will or won't. So I certainly would not give your a nod either.
 
Then again I don't recommend 20/20 splits either as some of them that I have researched would allow one rail at 20a and the other at less than 10a. If you have a high end graphics card and some drives you are likely to get stuck. That sucks as a 20/20 split is considured high end for a split rail. They do tend to work for more folks but I have even seen these cause issues and I am not real keen on giving them a nod either. If a PSU maker was willing to give more info then I would be less reluctant to give a nod if I knew it would balance properly.

See here is the deal. What we call a dual or tripple rail really isn't two or more real 12v rails. It is one that is current overload protected and split into two or more rails with what are called Shuts in some cases or just jumpered in others. However the PSU makers don't tell you that you only get 24 amps total on the 12v rail they call it a 20/20 split. Well the last I looked 20 amps and 20 amps should mean that you have 40amps total. However this is simply not the case. You may have 24a total output. Which case a 30 amp single rail is way better in a high end rig.

Take a Tagan u22 for example. I use it as it has a trick. You can combine it's two rails into one with a switch on the back. It has a 30a total 12v output if you have it switched to single rail. Or if you select dual it is a 20/20 split. Tagan is a pretty good PSU maker. However you can see that it is only giving 30a total power output on the 12v rails no matter where the switch is set. So in split mode both rails will have to equal that number. That may be a 15/15 split or a 20/10 split or maybe something in between. I have seen folks have issues in split mode that goes away in single rail mode. So yu tell me what is going on then.
