Dear MSI Support Team,
I am writing to request assistance regarding VPN compatibility issues with my MSI Radix router.
When I generate an OpenVPN configuration file from the router and attempt to connect using the latest OpenVPN client (version 2.6.16 on Windows 10), I encounter several warnings and errors:
The configuration relies on BF-CBC cipher and LZO compression, which are deprecated and no longer supported in modern OpenVPN versions.
It appears that the router firmware is still generating OpenVPN 2.4.x–style configurations, while current OpenVPN releases require modern ciphers (e.g., AES-256-GCM) and compression disabled for security reasons.
Could you please confirm if there is a firmware update or planned update for the MSI Radix router that:
Supports modern OpenVPN protocols (2.5+),
Provides secure ciphers such as AES-GCM,
Removes reliance on deprecated options like ns-cert-type, BF-CBC, and comp-lzo.
This update would ensure that the router remains compatible with current OpenVPN clients and avoids insecure configurations.
Thank you very much for your support. I look forward to your guidance on whether an update is available or planned, and any recommended steps I should take in the meantime.
Best regards,
Luis

The configuration relies on BF-CBC cipher and LZO compression, which are deprecated and no longer supported in modern OpenVPN versions.
- The client logs show warnings such as:
- “Compression for receiving enabled. Compression has been used in the past to break encryption.”
- “Unsupported cipher in --data-ciphers: BF-CBC.”
- As a result, the VPN connection fails to complete the TLS handshake.
It appears that the router firmware is still generating OpenVPN 2.4.x–style configurations, while current OpenVPN releases require modern ciphers (e.g., AES-256-GCM) and compression disabled for security reasons.
