I have had this MSI laptop for quite a few years, it's 970 video card died a while back and I bought a 1070 or 1080 as an attempt to upgrade, I believe its one of the china frankenputer ones. It has never worked, appeared in windows or anything. It may be bad and I am ok with that. I am about to upgrade my main system and thought about upgrading the laptop and while for its use case the main computer needs the extra horsepower this laptop does everything i need it to especially when it has a working graphics card which I decided to try and get functional. One of the things I read was that the 6th generation versions of these boards did not like non msi branded video cards in them and I figured that MAY be the issue as to why it isnt seeing it and so I figured I would try to update the bios as the one in here is E1782IG6.10C. The problem with that is, there is no update option in the bios and the new bios' from MSI do not include an updater. I tried CTRL + F5 to try that way, no dice. SO I have a two part question/request IF the bios indeed is stopping the system from seeing non MSI branded cards and thus prevent the one I have in here now from working I would like to offer a commision to create a BIOS that will bypass this requirement if this is possible. The reason here is two fold, one if this is a working video card, which i am not convinced it is, I would like for it to work in my machine. IF it is dead, which is highly likely based on a lot of things I have read, I will need to instead get a 980 or 970 and would like for that card to work when I get it assuming it works, since I have no idea if it will in fact be MSI branded I don't want for this to be an impediment. Secondly IF the bios is NOT blocking the video card from working and it is in fact just bad, is there a way to upgrade the BIOS or should I just leave it. The system works well enough as is, but I would like to upgrade to the latest BIOS because well I just don't have any real reason other than I can't I suppose but I have been in IT since 94 and have never found a problem that cant be licked and I sure as heck am not gonna let this laptop get the better of me. I'm stubborn that way. My guess is that at some point MSI figured all the bios' were to the point where all of them had the ez flash in the bios working and stopped adding the utility and this one is just old. I got it second hand and ran into this problem when I got it but figured the system worked well enough so I ignored it. But with Windows 10 dying and me not letting 11 in my home for so very many reason, I started to go down a feasibility of unix as my everyday driver again using the laptop as a test bed, and part of that was playing 3d games which requires the video card before I can make a full decision on dropping 10 for ubuntu 24. I have plenty of other computers to use to make media to flash this thing if it is needed so that isn't an issue. I just really want to test this before I decide to dump windows 10 when I do a full cpu/mb/ram/ssd swap on my main unit at the end of October beginning of November. So please, Hear my prayer oh god of MSI bios and guide me, I leave alms at those feet of whom I choose to offer worship. Ok enough satire, any help would be appreciated though.
