Ridiculous fan behavior on 5060 Ti

When the temperature on my "MSI 5060 TI 16G SHADOW 2X OC PLUS" crests over 80C--still below the thermal limit from what I've searched online--both fans hit 4000+ RPM.
A horrendous noise that I could avoid entirely if it didn't trigger at 80C, assuming HWINFO is correct.

The ridiculous part is that when this happens again, when it crests over 80C some seconds later (but stays below 83 C), it does not shriek like a banshee the second time around. So what gives?

This makes the card almost unusable when I want to use it for a heavy workload. I'm chalking this up to poor driver behavior and hopefully not that the heat sink is this inadequate. The card is undervolted, it doesn't even pull 160W under full load.
 
Well this likely explains things. Very cool of Nvidia to have hidden this.
This MSI 5060 TI card reaches 25+ degree Celsius hot spot over the 'GPU Temperature'.

And given that Nvidia hasn't actually officially stated what the max throttling temperature for desktop Blackwell GPUs is, this is what I have to go on.

Yeah, not a great product. At least the memory modules are cool.

Marginally better temperatures after repasting. 4 screws at the back, 2 screws connected to the front shroud, 2 screws at back on the mounting backet.

But the tiny heat sink on this thing cannot handle anything above 150 W, and this card can pull 180 W.

1. Your problem is indeed clearly related to the failure of the thermal paste. This is similar cases. (You should have seen.)

2. Thank you for reminding me many Windows hardware monitors have added hotspot temperature monitoring for 50 series.

3. For reference. My ASUS Prime 5060Ti 16GB is working normally, with a maximum core-hotspot temperature difference of 12 degrees Celsius.

4. NVIDIA app can automatically overclock GPU(performance tuning) under given conditions. My graphics card, with TDP limited to 84% (150W), tuned at +113MHz, which should help with cooling without losing performance.

Yep, the hotspot does seem to be a tad too warm

Unlike your ASUS Prime card, the heat sink on this cheap 5060 TI model I have basically has no thermal headroom, which makes the thermal interface load-bearing for this card.
Any sign of thermal paste drying/pump-out will eventually result in throttling temperature.

I might just have to buy a phase-change thermal pad.
 
Hello everyone. I have exactly the same graphics card: an MSI GeForce RTX 5060 Ti 16GB Shadow 2X OC Plus. My experience is very similar to the one reported in this thread.

After RTX 50-series hotspot monitoring became available, I noticed brief but very high hotspot temperatures during gaming. The regular GPU temperature always looked good, which is why I had never noticed the issue before.

Stock behavior observed in games:

  • GPU temperature: approximately 76.5°C maximum
  • Hotspot: up to 104.9°C
  • Maximum delta: approximately 28–29°C
  • Memory: approximately 60–62°C
  • The fans would suddenly ramp up when the hotspot approached 100°C
  • This happened most frequently in Black Desert Online while flying quickly through demanding areas, although I also recorded a hotspot of approximately 98°C in Path of Exile 2
  • The high values were usually brief and not constant
My case has good airflow with multiple case fans. My motherboard BIOS and NVIDIA drivers are up to date, and the graphics card has never been opened.

To mitigate the behavior, I created a more aggressive fan curve and configured the GPU to approximately 920 mV / 2497 MHz using MSI Afterburner. The effective voltage under heavy load is normally around 0.915 V, with the effective clock around 2415–2430 MHz.

With this undervolt, real gaming improved considerably. During demanding Black Desert gameplay at 1440p, high settings and up to 120 FPS—including flying with the Pegasus and grinding with all effects enabled—I recorded:

  • GPU maximum: approximately 72°C
  • Hotspot maximum: approximately 93.7°C
  • Maximum delta: approximately 24°C
  • GPU power maximum: approximately 134 W
  • No errors, artifacts or thermal-throttling indication
  • The previous abrupt fan ramping was greatly reduced
I also ran OCCT 3D Adaptive Variable tests to reproduce a worst-case synthetic load.

At a 90% power limit (162 W power limit recorded):

  • Hotspot maximum: 102.3°C
  • GPU maximum: 75.8°C
  • Delta maximum: 27.0°C
  • Fan maximum: approximately 3,850 RPM
  • No OCCT errors during the complete 15-minute test
At the minimum available 83% power limit (150 W power limit recorded):

  • Hotspot maximum: 101.1°C
  • GPU maximum: 75.4°C
  • Delta maximum: 26.5°C
  • Hotspot remained at or above 100°C for approximately 24.5 seconds
  • Fan maximum: approximately 3,830 RPM
  • No temperature-limit indication or instability
The synthetic result is obviously much more demanding than my normal gaming workload. In actual games, the undervolt has kept the hotspot below approximately 94–96°C and the card has remained stable.

I have already contacted MSI support and sent screenshots of the original 104.9°C hotspot result. I am waiting for clarification about whether this is considered expected behavior for the compact Shadow 2X cooler or whether MSI recommends an inspection/RMA. I will not open or repaste the card while it is under warranty.

Considering that another identical Shadow 2X in this thread behaves similarly, I am wondering whether this is primarily a limitation of the compact heatsink rather than an isolated manufacturing defect.

I would especially appreciate results from other Shadow 2X owners:

  1. What hotspot and GPU temperatures do you get at stock settings?
  2. What is your maximum hotspot-to-GPU delta?
  3. Has MSI provided an official hotspot limit or RMA recommendation for this model?

Unfortunately there is no reason to RMA this card because MSI used this exact cooler on the MSI 5050 Shadow 2X OC. That is a 130 W TDP card.
Overheating is the expected result when that same cooler is used on a 180 W card.

Correction, the "Shadow" MSI cards use a similar design aesthetic but different heat sink sizes.
What's more likely is that the cooler on this card is only appropriate for the 150 W 5060 TI 8 GB version.


This 5060 TI model is bottom-of-the-barrel. Even undervolted it cannot cool itself on workloads that use Tensor Cores + VRAM intensively at full utilization.
The power limit needs to get dropped all the way down to stop the fans from spinning at 4000 RPM. This behavior doesn't come up with most games except for some ray tracing/path tracing titles (e.g. Quake 2 RTX, not the most extreme case).

For games, my card undervolt is stable at .975 mV with a +465 Core boost without a power limit.
On MSI Afterburner be sure to set the horizontal line frequency cap by selecting your voltage limit and pressing double "L" on the keyboard", because I found that MSI AB will push core clocks too high above the limit. Most MSI AB undervolting tutorials neglect to mention that last part.
The fan limit is set to 68% (3000 RPM) at 78 C.

Your temperatures are similar to mine. Basically people should be warned not to buy this specific MSI GPU model.

I don't know how well other cheap models like the MSI "Ventus" can cool this GPU die, though I'd be surprised if the 5060 TI Shadow 2X OC isn't the worst model on the market.
(At least the back plate is made of metal.)

*If all you do is play games and your ambient temperatures aren't high/PC case has enough airflow, this 5060 TI model _might_ be fine enough if it's considerably cheaper than other models, but clearly this a terrible card for most people anyway if undervolting/power limiting is almost a necessity.

**For anyone reading, I do not recommend disassembling your card since it will void the 3-year warranty and the temp. improvement from repasting will be marginal at best.

I am currently using an undervolt of approximately 900 mV at 2797 MHz, with the power limit at 100%. With this configuration, the hotspot generally remains below 100°C during gaming and the fans no longer suddenly increase to over 4000 RPM. At stock settings, I recorded hotspot peaks between 102°C and 105°C, while the regular GPU temperature remained around 76–79°C.

For comparison, a friend of mine has an MSI RTX 5060 Ti 16GB Ventus 2X. He uses it completely stock and does not experience these sudden fan-speed increases. During his gaming sessions, the hotspot rarely reaches 80°C.

Since my card is still under warranty, I will not disassemble it. For now, I intend to continue using the undervolt while waiting for further clarification from MSI.

Once again, thank you for your help and for sharing your findings.

Your hotspot temp. is a bit higher than mine after the repaste (again, not worth it).
It's likely the thermal paste pumping out or drying makes it slightly worse. Alan J T in this thread mentions that MSI uses phase-change pads, but likely only in more expensive card models.

I attached a HW INFO screenshot with the card pulling nearly 180 W. ~2700 RPM fan speed. The PC case is open mesh with no fans underneath the GPU but free space; room temp. is ~27 C.

MSI has also replied to me again. After reviewing my report, including the 104.6°C hotspot and approximately 30°C delta at factory settings, they stated that this behavior appears to be normal and should not affect normal usage or warranty coverage. I still consider the stock temperature uncomfortably high, but at least the issue is now officially documented.

I installed Quake 2 RTX and tested it at 2560×1440 with all available settings set as high as possible. I used my current profile of 900 mV at 2797 MHz, 100% power limit and stock memory.
  • Average/max power: 130.6/140.1 W
  • Average graphics clock: 2704 MHz, remaining between 2692 and 2730 MHz
  • Average/max GPU temperature: 65.9/70°C
  • Average/max hotspot: 84/89.6°C
  • Average/max fan speed: 2483/2776 RPM
  • No thermal throttling detected
Your 975 mV profile clearly provides substantially higher clock performance, while mine prioritizes lower power consumption and temperature.

For now, I will keep my current profile and preserve the warranty. Thank you again for your assistance and for sharing the results of your repaste and testing.
