Severe Lag Issues After Upgrading to MSI Thin 15 (RTX 4050) – Windows 11

Description of the Issue

I recently upgraded from my previous laptop to a higher-spec MSI laptop, but I am experiencing severe lag and stuttering, making some games almost unplayable.

Despite the significant hardware upgrade, performance is much worse than expected, and in some cases worse than my old system.

I would like to understand the possible cause and solution.

1. Extreme lag during gameplay (mouse moves normally)

  • The lag is severe enough to make gameplay very difficult.
  • Interestingly, the mouse cursor moves smoothly, while the game itself stutters heavily.
  • I have attached a video:
    • Please check the mouse movement at the beginning
    • Around 59 seconds, you can see a clear delay between in-game background animation and mouse movement

Some games are affected much more severely than others.

Games with severe issues:

  • Overwatch
  • Honkai: Star Rail

Other games are somewhat playable but still not smooth.

2. Windows + G (Xbox Game Bar) overlay does not work in-game

  • Windows + G does not open during gameplay
  • It works normally on the desktop
  • This happens consistently across affected games

Current System Information

  • Model: MSI Thin 15 B13VE-i5
  • CPU: Intel i5-13420H (Raptor Lake, 2.1 GHz)
  • GPU: NVIDIA RTX 4050 (Laptop GPU)
  • RAM: 16GB DDR4
  • OS: Windows 11

Previous Laptop (for comparison)

  • CPU: Intel i5-8300H (Coffee Lake, 2.3 GHz)
  • GPU: NVIDIA GTX 1050
  • RAM: 16GB DDR4
  • OS: Windows 10

Additional Notes

  • The issue started immediately after switching to this new laptop
  • I suspect:
    • Windows 11-related issues
    • NVIDIA GPU / Optimus / driver issues
    • Possible BIOS or MSI Center power/performance profile issues

Request

I would appreciate guidance on:

  • Known issues with this model or Windows 11
  • BIOS, MSI Center, or GPU settings to check
  • Recommended driver versions (NVIDIA / Intel)
  • Any diagnostic steps I should follow

Troubleshooting Steps I Have Already Tried

I have already tried the following steps, but none of them resolved the issue:

  • Set Power Mode to Maximum Performance while the charger is connected
  • Disabled V-Sync
  • Adjusted NVIDIA Control Panel and NVIDIA settings
    • Tested both maximum performance settings and minimum/low performance settings
  • Disabled Fullscreen Optimizations

None of the above had a noticeable effect.

The only change that made a partial difference was disabling V-Sync.
After turning it off, Honkai: Star Rail became playable to some extent,
but performance issues are still present.

The attached video was recorded with V-Sync disabled.

Additional Important Observation (Wacom Tablet & Adobe Photoshop)

There is an additional detail that may be relevant.

I am a Wacom tablet user and have the Wacom tablet driver installed.
I also use Adobe applications, and I experienced the same type of lag/stuttering issue in Adobe Photoshop, similar to what happens in the games mentioned above.

In Photoshop, the issue disappeared after I disabled GPU acceleration (Graphics Processor) in the application settings.
Since then, Photoshop has been working normally without lag.

This behavior makes me suspect a possible issue related to:

  • GPU acceleration
  • Driver interaction between NVIDIA GPU / Intel iGPU
  • Or a conflict involving Wacom tablet drivers and GPU acceleration

I am not a native English speaker, so I used GPT to help write this post.
I hope my issue and the details have been communicated accurately.
If more information or logs are needed, I can provide them.
Thank you in advance for your help.

Among the description and these words, the issue could probably be related to the Nvidia GPU.
Refer to the FAQ to do a clean installation of the Nvidia graphics driver.
You can try installing the driver on the MSI website; it might be outdated, but it could be more stable.
Or try installing the drivers on the Nvidia website, the latest or any other versions.

Overwatch has some pretty Optimized settings but still requires a lowering many to maintain consistent framerates.

Keep your drivers updated always as first order of business then 2 , Uninstall all windows bloat ware, and disable all background apps when gaming

Theres 2 kinds of stuttering in gaming
First is; network issues, which is your and your ISPs responsibility
Second is your FPS, which can be fixed by lowering your expectations and updated drivers and small NCP tweaks.

Next is firmyly Boycott all things Windows 11 and try as hard as you can to get your hands on a copy of Windows 10. Home or Pro it doesnt matter.

1. Update network drivers through device manager Realtek PCIe GbE Family Controller, and intel WIFI keep both updated. Keep your games with Accepting incoming rules and outgoing rules in your network advanced settings to set exceptions that your firewall can't impose upon.
2. Ensure you're playing on Ethernet Cat 6 cable or ensure your Wi-Fi 6 drivers are updated.
3. Ensure you're running Nvidia App to get the latest drivers. Outdated drivers cause game lag.
4. Research always.
5. Download MSI center and make sure your laptop fans are moving 24/7 cooler boost mode. Put MSI center in balanced mode, open COG Next to Discrete mode for fan control.
6. Update windows always.

Nvidia Control panel:
1. keep Nvidia reduce latency setting to "ultra", rest to NVIDIA default settings.
2. Use Nvidia Reflex always. Set Nvidia Reflex to Enable + boost in all games you play.
3. learn how to navigate NCP and change lower your settings in game, then gradually increase them if performance is stable.
4. set a system maximum framerate for all your games, max framerate on 300fps is good. Global settings all you need.
5. Don't use Vsync most.
6. Use Low anti-aliasing, SMAA Medium or FXAA low.
7. Avoid Nvidia DLSS Super sampling AI dogshit, when competitive gaming.
8. Turn off background applications disable quick task bar and system tray unused features except NCP.
9. always clean your Disc cleanup and delete shader cache files and temporary files, update windows.
10. use Windows 10, 11 is horse manure.
11. In NVidia control panel, set power mode to maximum performance.
