I recently bought the X870 Tomahawk to use with a 9800x3d and Corsair 2x16Gb 6000CL30 EXPO (CMK32GX5M2B6000Z30) but I'm having lots of issues...
Frequent crashes (windows sometimes shows "Clock watchdog timeout" BSOD, sometimes no blue screen), my NVME drives sometimes disappear (I need to turn off the power completely, a reboot isn't enough to show it again) making the OS unable to boot and I could not get the Wifi to work.

Today during a reboot there was a warning that the hardware changed so I press F1 to open the bios and the EXPO profile simply disappeared! I exit the bios, boot the system and now it only shows 4Gb of RAM?!? The system is very slow too.
I'm using the latest bios, but it isn't stable, please advise.

Have you installed wifi drivers and are you using any wireless devices with usb plugins (not the motherboard bluetooth) out of curiosity?
i installed all drivers, using wifi, ethernet, etc! all my usbs are working, bluetooth devices, but i dont have any wireless receiver for usb

actually i have one for a game controller, i will try to find tomorrow and let you know, but it will probably work!

I purchased this motherboard and a 9800X3D. I have tried A16, A17, and 1A1A. All three have been extremely unstable. I can not enable CPU Boost, PBO, EXPO, or X3D Game mode, otherwise Windows crashes within 3 minutes. Without those enabled, I get between 1 and 6 hours before the OS completely locks up. Temps are below 60C on a 360mm AIO. MSI has told me to either RMA the CPU or wait for a stable BIOS. This is with a brand new Windows 11 Pro 24H2 install. I am using a Corsair HX1000i power supply and G.Skill TridentZ F5-6000J3238G32GX2-TZ5NR RAM. This is my first AMD build since Bulldozer. I have never experienced so many issues with new hardware like this.
I cannot confirm this with the same CPU and F5-6000J3040G32GX2-TZ5N! Both your and my RAM kit are in the QVL. I (still) have some problems with the UEFI, but I haven't had a single BSOD so far! Like you, I had also installed A16, A17 and now A1A. I use EXPO and have the TDP set to 95W and the CPU boosts up to 5225 MHz. Are you sure the CPU is seated correctly and no pins are bent from the socket? As OS I use Win 11 23H2, 24H2 has countless problems, which could also be a cause...

Edit: Have you checked your RAM with MemTest?

My machine is still running well with A1A but I have to have mem training on by default, otherwise I get bsods. Memory is running at full A-XMP speed 6400MTs with tight timings (which haven't made a huge difference so far....)

Not Tested PBO yet.

Running A1A with 9800X3D/QVOL Certified G.Skill 6000mhz RAM.
For the most part it's stable, however most times when the computer wakes from sleep it will BSOD with the "driver_power_state_failure (9f)" - this is a COMMON issue that I have read many are dealing with. I've tried all the BIOS versions; nothing makes any difference. I've turned off power saving in all USB/Network etc. items in device manager and the BSOD persist.
Also, with BIOS A1A there is no WiFI - it completely kills the onboard WiFi hardware, there's nothing in device manager and the installation driver software will simply advise there's no hardware to install to. BT works though.
There's no option in any of the BIOS versions to turn off hard drive hot plugging, which is such a rookie mistake to make - seriously MSI, this is basic level stuff, how many customers are inadvertently right clicking on that icon in Windows and removing their internal drives and wondering why stuff doesn't work? Fix this ASAP!

From time to time the BIOS will reset itself to defaults, but will save my profile which is at least a small plus.
Startup times are literally hilarious, reminds me of some of the first PC's I built in the late 1990's - whatever individual at MSI that's responsibly for these outrageous post times should be sent back to high school. It's a total joke.

I really don't know what to make of this board. I purchased because the reviews said it was a very strong board for the money, performing better than many higher prices options. I also like it didn't have RGB as I was going for a clean look.
I have usually always built systems with either Gigabyte or AsRock, however Gigabyte's customer service has seriously gone down hill, and had heard some good things about MSI so figured it was worth a try. Not so sure, but since it's a PITA to rip apart my PC to return the board, I will live with it in the hope that MSI resolves issues that they should be embarrassed to put their name on - there's literally a couple of companies that make all BIOS worldwide, how this can be such a bonfire is just wild.

So yeah, fingers crossed they fix this within a couple of weeks, or it will be going back to Amazon, and I'll just grab the latest Taichi version from AsRock because such basic BIOS '101' stuff should be resolved immediately, not still persist after 4-5 BIOS updates.

I made this account to voice my disappointment with this board. I've had a myriad off issues most of which have been voiced in this thread. As others have said, I am not a beta tester! MSI please fix your QA.

My newest and most severe issue so far? The ethernet has stopped working completely. Problem as described here, seems this is another glaring problem shared by me and others
The lights on the port don't light up anymore and windows shows the network cable as unplugged. Different PC works fine on the router. Reinstalling drivers did nothing. Now I am stuck with wifi.

About to return this unfinished product and go AsRock.
Don't upgrade to the latest BIOS A1A or you will have no internet as that BIOS seems to have forgotten the board has WiFi!

My board runs with A1A. Both Ethernet (2.5G) and WLAN are available since the upgrade from A17. This was not the case with A17.

If Ethernet and/or WLAN are no longer available, first try to load the default settings in the UEFI. If this does not work, then perform a CMOS clear. This should bring the device(s) back...

Im on A1A and I also have working internet both WLAN and LAN. And my system is stable nor restarting bios settings.

I'm returning the MSI. Bought an Asrock x870 pro rs and everything seems fine right away... and it's cheaper too!
It's ridiculous that they claim this ram is not tested, IT IS on their compatibility list (for ryzen 7000 though). Now they will tell me the ryzen 9000 (with alleged increased memory speeds/compatibility) will not work at EXPO 6000? And the ryzen 7000 will?!?!?
Not to mention I changed the ram to a G.Skill kit (also on the list) and still had issues. The board is already back in the box, returning on monday.

Goodbye MSI.
Two weeks later I am happy to report that I had zero issues with the Asrock X870 Pro RS during all this time. Same RAM, SSD, CPU etc. Amazon has refunded the returned Tomahawk.
To those still having issues... good luck!

best bios version was A17. It was stable and very smooth. And msi removed it from their site.

looks like new bios update fixed lots of all our problems. So, yeah we’re good. Thanks.

i decided to update the bios and try it A1A.

Now after update i can not set expo mode to any other values. In bios is stating that its changed but in memory on windows its marking as 4800
This was working fine on A10 bios i had before. So updating the bios make things worse. Very bad MSI board and bios support!

After last cmos on A10 i started to get some strange errors on board display even it will normaly post and work on windows.
And not to forget another benefit after updating to A1A. With exactly the same options selected as before my boot time went from 28 seconds to more than 80 seconds. I can simply not believe how they decided that are good to start producing and shipping this board.

Try resetting your settings in bios with F6, A1A was an improvement for me.

Just a quick uptade.
Tried bios A16 and it was the same Expo profile 2 for my ram with 5600 didnt worked.
Reverted back to A13 (oldest one i could fine on MSI page) and profile 2 with 5600 is working just fine.
So yea the last 2 newest BIOS available in my case are worthless.

I am using this motherboard. One big issue that I can't switch the USB 4 port off in bios to allow my MVME M2-2 to run at full speed (X4). In bios there is an option to switch from usb 4 to M2-2 x4 . But apparently, it's not working. I used the switch in bios but still my NVME (M2-2) runs at X2. Is there any solution?

I have tried all three available BIOS versions and none of them allow me to run this Corsair 6000 CL30 kit at its rated speed, none allow 5600 at any of the suggested settings either. I can get 4800 CL26-32-32-70 to run with no errors or other issues so till I can get an ASUS board Ill have to deal with this speed. Its baffling MSI let this compatibility issue get passed their QA, I'm sending this X870 Tomahawk to the bin as soon as I get the ASUS board, its not even worth selling second hand and its outside its return window. (Trash belongs in the trash and MSI need to up their game)

Seems you got lucky to even get 5600.

Might just be a faulty board or something. I can do expo out of the box 6000/6400 no problem with my 9800x3d. Id probably try to rma the board or try a different ram kit.

Hi. Just my experience with this board so far (and it’s not good!). I have built many systems in my time, my 5900X sits quite happily on a X570 MSI tomahawk.

This system:
9800x3d
Arctic freezer 3 320mm
MSI x870 tomahawk

CORSAIR VENGEANCE RGB DDR5 32GB (2x16GB) DDR5 6000MHz CL30 AMD EXPO Intel XMP iCUE Compatible Computer Memory – Grey (CMH32GX5M2B6000Z30K)

Samsung 990 pro
Rtx 970 (old card but confirmed working on another machine)
NZXT C1200W

Bios: 7E51v1A1A(Beta version)

My real issue is I cannot get the board to use the Nvidia 979 board. If I have it installed windows crashes on startup and I can never get an output from it. No 970 installed, on integrated graphics and everything is fine. Bios selection is on PEG when the 970 is installed and the MSI refuses to output through HDMI on it. Any thoughts please?
