Subject: MSI RTX 5070 Ti Gaming Trio OC – No POST on ASUS Sabertooth X58 – Request for Technical Assistance

Hello guys,

I recently purchased an MSI GeForce RTX 5070 Ti Gaming Trio OC 16GB, along with a new be quiet! Power Zone 2 850W power supply, to upgrade my existing computer.

Unfortunately, despite extensive troubleshooting, my computer fails to complete POST whenever the RTX 5070 Ti is installed.

I would appreciate your help in identifying the cause and determining whether a solution exists.

1. Complete System Specifications

  • Motherboard: ASUS Sabertooth X58
  • Motherboard BIOS: Version 1402 (latest official ASUS BIOS)
  • Processor: Intel Xeon X5690, 6 cores, 3.46 GHz
  • CPU Cooler: Zalman CNPS10X
  • Graphics Card: MSI GeForce RTX 5070 Ti Gaming Trio OC 16GB GDDR7
  • Power Supply: be quiet! Power Zone 2 850W
  • PSU Certification: 80 Plus Platinum
  • PSU Standard: ATX 3.1 / PCIe 5.1
  • GPU Power Connector: Native 12V-2x6
  • Memory: DDR3, mixed memory modules
  • PCIe Interface: PCI Express 2.0 x16
The motherboard and previous graphics card were functioning correctly before this upgrade.

2. Detailed Problem Description

When I install the MSI RTX 5070 Ti and power on the computer, the following occurs:

  1. The graphics card receives power and its lighting activates.
  2. The graphics card fans start operating.
  3. The CPU cooler starts and continues running.
  4. The power supply fan initially starts but subsequently stops.
  5. The computer fails to complete POST.
  6. No image appears on the monitor.
  7. The keyboard's Num Lock key does not respond.
The system appears to remain stuck during hardware initialization.

My new be quiet! Power Zone 2 850W PSU features semi-passive cooling, so I understand that its fan stopping may be normal behaviour.

However, the computer never reaches the BIOS screen.

3. Troubleshooting Already Performed

I have already performed several troubleshooting procedures:

  • Updated the ASUS Sabertooth X58 motherboard to the latest official BIOS, version 1402.
  • Tested the RTX 5070 Ti in different PCIe slots.
  • Confirmed that my previous graphics card works correctly in the same motherboard and PCIe slot.
  • Investigated and adjusted the available motherboard BIOS settings.
  • Switched the MSI RTX 5070 Ti dual-BIOS selector from Silent mode to Gaming mode.
  • Inspected the power connections and investigated alternative cabling arrangements.
  • Investigated potential compatibility issues between modern NVIDIA GPUs and older Intel X58 motherboards.
Unfortunately, none of these procedures has resolved the problem.

4. Technical Questions

I would appreciate detailed technical clarification regarding the following questions.

Question 1: Legacy BIOS Compatibility

Does the MSI RTX 5070 Ti Gaming Trio OC support initialization on motherboards that use a traditional Legacy BIOS?

Does this graphics card require native UEFI support to initialize correctly?

Could the lack of native UEFI support on the ASUS Sabertooth X58 explain the failure to complete POST?

Question 2: GPU Firmware and VBIOS

Does MSI provide an official VBIOS update that could improve compatibility with older motherboards?

Does this graphics card include legacy VGA initialization support, or does it exclusively support UEFI GOP?

If it exclusively supports UEFI GOP, is there any official MSI solution that would allow this graphics card to function on my motherboard?

Question 3: PCI Express Compatibility

Are there any known compatibility issues between the MSI RTX 5070 Ti and Intel X58 motherboards operating with PCI Express 2.0?

Could PCIe initialization or link negotiation prevent the system from completing POST?

Question 4: Power Supply and Connections

My system uses a brand-new be quiet! Power Zone 2 850W power supply, compliant with ATX 3.1 and PCIe 5.1 specifications.

The power supply features a native 12V-2x6 connector.

Are there any specific power delivery requirements or known compatibility issues that I should investigate with this particular graphics card?

Question 5: Possible Technical Solutions

Are there any motherboard BIOS settings, GPU firmware updates or other technical procedures that MSI recommends for this configuration?

Has MSI documented successful operation of the RTX 5070 Ti on Intel X58 motherboards or other comparable legacy platforms?

Would MSI be able to escalate this issue to its graphics card engineering team for further technical clarification?

5. My Objective

I understand that the ASUS Sabertooth X58 is an older motherboard and that my Intel Xeon X5690 processor and PCIe 2.0 interface will limit the maximum performance of the RTX 5070 Ti.

However, achieving maximum graphics performance is not my immediate objective.

My priority is to get the computer to complete POST and successfully initialize the MSI RTX 5070 Ti.

I would strongly prefer to retain my existing motherboard and processor rather than replace the entire platform.

I am particularly interested in determining whether the problem is related to Legacy BIOS compatibility, GPU firmware, PCIe initialization or another hardware issue.

Before investing in a completely new motherboard, processor and memory, I would like to exhaust all technically viable solutions.

Thank you for your time and assistance.

Best regards

Topic moved to correct area.

If the GPU is not working, then it's board issue rather than GPU issue.

I would test the GPU in another PC to ensure the GPU is working.
If the GPU is working, then I would check with Asus if they have any beta BIOS that can improve GPU compatibility.
Or and to ask them about the mainboard compatibility with 5070 Ti series.

This motherboard will not have 5000 series GPU support. See if ASUS have a Updated bios that will support GPUs made after 2012
Does this graphics card require native UEFI support to initialize correctly?

As far as I know, in most cases, yes, it must natively support UEFI

RTX5090 (50 series, basically) already had compatibility issues on my B650 motherboard running a 3 year old BIOS.
So unless ASUS can provide you with an update (I really doubt it), your new GPU is simply not compatible.

that Combination is terrible. that year motherboard has struggled with newer Graphics Cards now for nearly a Decade. also alot of the Features that GPU wants do not Exist and is like Strapping a Supercharger off a Dragster to a ford Pinto and expecting it to work.

your Intel Xeon X5690 is most Comparable to a Ryzen 3 1300X and your CPU even if it worked would be a Massive Bottleneck as your CPU just can't output the data Needed. I think its Time to Upgrade to a Newer Platform as your Motherboard and CPU at this point are Ancient in tech terms.
