Thickness of space between heatsink and VRM/capacitors?

I'm trying to determine the space between the heatsink and VRM/capacitors to accurately upgrade the thermal paste/pads, etc.
Has anyone seen a schematic showing the tolerances? I'm assuming it's pretty thin due to the white cream used for the thermal interface material.
I've used putty, but feel it's too thick and preventing the heatsink from making contact with the CPU/GPU.
